Part of the reason why I brought it up. :) Some of mine are total canon gags, like

backwardname, in which the quotes must be emphasized, so ... everyone, come emphasize quotes.

For some reason (I'll blame it on Murphy), I want to say 'la calice' translates to 'the rose'*, which would make some sense given the canon.

*I make no promises on how accurate said translation is, though - the chara may know seven other languages, but the mun does good keeping the one straight sometimes.

I actually think that's Pullman's language play. Every hero has a weapon appropriate to himself or herself; Will Parry is a subtle young man, and he carries the subtle knife. (Pullman's use of language with regard to Will is actually rather unsubtle. I mean, the character's name is Will, as in strength of will, Parry, as in a defensive maneuver.)
