OMG, another meme.

Just because, honestly, right now?

I'm curious.

And I cannot remember how or when it started the last time this one was discussed, but --

What are the stories behind your pups' usernames?

Also, we should consider a 'meme' tag for the back room, maybe, but that is unrelated!

[identity profile] mark-of-samael.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
95_tan - "-tan" is a cutesy corruption of "-chan," which is the close/familiar version of "-san" in Japanese. It's how most of the people in TW fandom refer to the various OSes.

hideousprogeny - I looked for something interesting in the Frankenstein book. This fit.

shockinglycute - should speak for itself, with Pikachu.

no_devo_quotes - The whip is the Belmonts' signature weapon. And there's a certain song by Devo that applies there.

mark_of_samael - this is what Dahlia calls the symbols that Alessa put all over the nightmare version of Silent Hill. Um, and it was the only thing I could think of that fit and wasn't taken.

First, and totally unrelated, I would like to express my undying love for that icon.

Okay, as for the username, it's terribly unoriginal. My girl is from a short story called "The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" so...

*gestures to username*

I did consider creating something based on a line from the story; somebody described her as having 'D-cup guts and trainer bra brains', but I couldn't think of any combinations that really worked.

*seconds motion for meme tag*

[livejournal.com profile] the_seafarer comes from The Last Battle, where Caspian is referred to as both "the Navigator" and "the Seafarer." (I liked "seafarer" better)

[livejournal.com profile] galactic_prez and [livejournal.com profile] avonlea_girl are fairly obvious.

[livejournal.com profile] la_calice came with Utena when I adopted her, and I'm not sure of the significance. When I have money again I think I'll change it.

[livejournal.com profile] _hear_no_evil is a bad pun on Nick being deaf and on the "good" side in The Stand.

[livejournal.com profile] man_of_all_work is how Perry describes himself when he doesn't admit to Amy that he is King.

[livejournal.com profile] herr_farrenen: James is thrown off by Siegfried's first name before they meet, and imagines him as a German vet whose name had been warped by years in England. He was wrong, of course.

[livejournal.com profile] subtle_will: Will is subtle in character, and he is the keeper of the subtle knife. All right, I'm terrible at puns, yes.

[identity profile] jackdriscoll.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
I do not know how the usernames for [livejournal.com profile] jackdriscoll and [livejournal.com profile] jed_leland arose. Sorry.

--

[livejournal.com profile] killer_bride because she's an assasin and was known for a movie and a half as the Bride.

--

[livejournal.com profile] iwasalevel6 because he whined in season 4 that he was once had a level 6 access to CTU...stuff...and that regulating him to a lower access level was just wrong.

--

[livejournal.com profile] agreathunter because that's what he sees himself as. That's what he wants to be. That's what he is, really.

--

[livejournal.com profile] narrator_rod because he's a narrator and his name is Rod. Right.

--

[livejournal.com profile] terroristlady because she's a terrorist and a woman. Yup.

--

[livejournal.com profile] _driscoll ...fah, I'm not answering that.

--

[livejournal.com profile] not_that_bill because he's not Bill Weasley.

--

[livejournal.com profile] _myloveisreal, helloooo movie tagline! That, and, well, yes, his love is real.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_whiteflame/ 2006-02-01 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Behrooz - [livejournal.com profile] kayip. It's a Turkish word for "lost" with some connotations for "sacrifice." This is also known as Veronica had NO idea what to use and refused to use something like 'terrorteen'

Jane Saunders - [livejournal.com profile] scares_me. Comes from a line in the show, when Jane says that Jack Bauer "scares me." She had rather good reasoning for this.

Ingrid - [livejournal.com profile] _whiteflame. Comes from a line near the opening of the novel White Oleander, as Astrid, Ingrid's daughter, describes her mother looking out at the city from the roof of their apartment building. "I climbed to the roof and easily spotted her blond hair like a white flame in the light of the three-quarter moon."
newredshoes: possum, "How embarrassing!" (the navel-gazing icon)

[personal profile] newredshoes 2006-02-01 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like [livejournal.com profile] diamndcourtesan and [livejournal.com profile] gooddoggromit are kinda obvious, although one could argue that Gromit is not always terribly good in the traditional rule-following sense. [livejournal.com profile] renevatio is a misspelling of the first thing that really cues Merrick off about what's going on in Lincoln's brain, i.e. that he's remembering things that his clone sponsor knew or experienced -- it's the name of a boat Tom Lincoln designed that features prominently in Lincoln's dreams, called Renovatio. It means "rebirth" in Latin.

Oh hell, that was boring.

This is a great meme, though -- some people's usernames I see and squeal, they're so clever.

*is still awake because she is splitting her time between Sosc paper and Jack!thread of booze and woe*

most of mine are obvious ones but some arent so...

[personal profile] inquisitivehero 2006-02-01 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Inquisitivehero for Hank McCoy came from a story that told how he always asked Why about everything, and was very curious. Hence the name.

Conflictedhero for Bruce Banner was easy, as here was this guy who tried his best to be a good guy but was saddled by all these multiple personalities. Most of which werent so good.

Originalmarvel, for Captain Marvel was a double. He was both the first to use the power of Shazam and the first Captain Marvel, even though Marvel Comics basically stole the name years later.

Magius_unlocked was because I was letting Magius out of Krynn, which, in DnD, is a locked system.

Teyfera is Teyfera's name.

knight_sparhawk is because Sparhawk is a knight.

elrond_healer is because one of Elrond's strongest attributes was his healing ability.

cain_walker is because Cain was cursed to be a walker on Earth till the final trump.

bohemia_spirit is because Bohemia is a Spirit.

[identity profile] jackdriscoll.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, Jack thread of booze and woe.

Makes me sad we're almost out of vodka at home.

[identity profile] nanashi-sama.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason (I'll blame it on Murphy), I want to say 'la calice' translates to 'the rose'*, which would make some sense given the canon.

*I make no promises on how accurate said translation is, though - the chara may know seven other languages, but the mun does good keeping the one straight sometimes.
ext_27060: Sumer is icomen in; llude sing cucu! (The Green Knight's Green Axe)

[identity profile] rymenhild.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Will is subtle in character, and he is the keeper of the subtle knife. All right, I'm terrible at puns, yes.

I actually think that's Pullman's language play. Every hero has a weapon appropriate to himself or herself; Will Parry is a subtle young man, and he carries the subtle knife. (Pullman's use of language with regard to Will is actually rather unsubtle. I mean, the character's name is Will, as in strength of will, Parry, as in a defensive maneuver.)

***

[livejournal.com profile] theravenboy is how a prophecy written in cipher on the side of a golden grail describes Bran Davies. Also, the name Bran roughly translates to 'raven.'

[livejournal.com profile] grene_gome, the username of Bertilak de Hautdesert, the Green Knight, is one phrase used to describe the Knight in canon; it's Middle English for "green man."

[livejournal.com profile] lyra_silver is a shortened version of Lyra's name, Lyra Silvertongue. (If I were making her journal now, I'd come up with something more creative.)

The other two are self-explanatory.

[livejournal.com profile] rebel_falcon - Han Solo - came that way, name picked by the previous mun, but it's fairly obvious. :)

[livejournal.com profile] i_spoiled_it - Stephanie Brown - 'cos I was getting desperate for one that was free, Steph's first 'hero' codename was Spoiler, and she died in the middle of a gang war that she started, so she's got lotsa guilt going on.

[livejournal.com profile] safetyoverstyle - Cassie Sandsmark, when she first became the second Wonder Girl, used to wear kneepads and giant safety goggles. Then a different writer took over and she moved into spandex and boob shots and lost her personality grumble grumble grumble etc.

[livejournal.com profile] blackbanthaboy - Face Loran was a galactically famous child star when he was younger, even though he's incredibly embarrassed about the fact now; one of the holos he starred in was called The Black Bantha. (Or something similar. *too lazy to check canon*)

[livejournal.com profile] chilliking - Ollie Queen makes the kind of chilli that only Batman can eat straight-faced. (Even Superman uses his ice-breath on the stuff before putting it in his mouth.) It's joked that it's part of a JLA entrance ritual to try to eat Green Arrow's chilli.

...Oooh dear.

[livejournal.com profile] silver_flecks: Flecks of silver once obscured Delirium's vision. Now, she can see around them, but hey, still there.

[livejournal.com profile] prydeful: ...Her last name is Pryde. It is a bad pun. I'm sorry.

[livejournal.com profile] talented_biter: Sunny bites. And she is good at it.

[livejournal.com profile] just_mad_about: I'm just mad about Saffron, and she's just made about me...yes, also bad.

[livejournal.com profile] follow_me_in: Because Lucy went first into Narnia and the others followed her.

[livejournal.com profile] pure_ebony: ...S'kinda self-explanatory, no?

[livejournal.com profile] just_elaine: because that's what she most likes being

[livejournal.com profile] ay_el_ef: Also not hard to figure out.

[livejournal.com profile] captain_falafel: Is a line! In show!

Did they call you Mellow Yellow?

[identity profile] fathers-cleric.livejournal.com 2006-02-01 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
*considers*

[livejournal.com profile] fathers_cleric because-well initially preston was the only person on the dose at the beginning of teh movie. Father's ultrimate tool against the forces of ebil that make of the violence and emotions.

[livejournal.com profile] hollywdcockroch...I loved the line in Kong about Carl being a cockroch, and since hollywood is/was populated with people like Carl I felt it rather fitting to add "hollywd" to the name

[livejournal.com profile] parlor_tricks the BEST line in Batman begins was when Ra's did his thing about image and shape being "parlor" tricks. Hence this title.

[livejournal.com profile] jusa_littlelion I wrote a dim fanfic where I accidentally mistyped the world librian and lion so it became stuck in my head that robbie would be a little lion cause his dad was a big one. *grins*

[livejournal.com profile] undrgnd_leader Jurgen's name is what he does. *shrugshrug*

[livejournal.com profile] lassotrickIn the making of Sin City book they made a big deal about how Robert Rodriguez had a stagehand who knew how to do rope tricks and taught jessica Alba um. That and it seemed like something she'd be able to do.

(That and the line in BFK where Rafferty goes "And call that gal Nancy, and tell her to bring her lasso" brought strange images into my brainmeats)

and because I feel like including him-

[livejournal.com profile] notanormalfox. Which just-describes him to a tea.

[livejournal.com profile] bad_in_latin: In the FF episode "The Train Job", Mal's just gotten back from starting a fight in an Alliance-friendly bar, and he walks into the infirmary where Simon and River are talking, as he walks out, River's only comment is, "Mal. Bad. In Latin."

[livejournal.com profile] realmrsreynolds: *adjusts Ma Reynolds voice* Because someone attempted to marry Malcolm without his bein' knowledgable of it, and she is here to explain to everyone that she is the real McCoy. Er. Reynolds. Yes.

Sadly repeating m'self, I adopted the journal for [livejournal.com profile] saint_aequitas but am willing to bet the name came from the movie title (The Boondock Saints)/the fact that the press calls the boys 'The Saints of South Boston' and Murphy's tattoo of AƉQUITAS (Latin for Justice) on his right hand.

Didn't have this chara last time, though - [livejournal.com profile] eagleoftheglen got her name because the Ravenclaw badge is an eagle and the Sorting Hat once mentioned her as being 'from the glen' (which the fandom generally takes to mean she's from Scotland).
newredshoes: possum, "How embarrassing!" (take that hat off. it suits you.)

[livejournal.com profile] b_hawkins Self explanatory.

[livejournal.com profile] musical_muse is the Muse of Music
[livejournal.com profile] loverly_lady is the Muse of Erotica and Love Poetry, therefore, of lovers.
[livejournal.com profile] magick_willow is a witch.
[livejournal.com profile] oh_frak_me is one of Starbuck's catchphrases.

[livejournal.com profile] always_k_i_t_t - Even though he goes through changes in canon and in Milliways, the one thing that's not changed is that Kitt is Kitt.

[livejournal.com profile] not_a_surgeon - In season one, Bonnie mentions that her father wanted her to be a surgeon, but she couldn't stand the sight of blood. She chose technology instead.

[livejournal.com profile] ucav_tinman - Talon Three, Lieutenant Henry Purcell, gave Eddie the callsign Tinman on their first flight out, and Eddie is a UCAV - Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle.

[livejournal.com profile] h_constant - This is taken from the value of exchange in Vurt - Hobart's Constant.

ok, here we go.

[livejournal.com profile] watcher_g_man for Giles, pretty straightforward. He's a Watcher, and Xander liked to call him "G-man" in the canon. Bwah.

[livejournal.com profile] doc_venkman for Venkman, again straightforward, and while Venkman usually doesn't act seriously, he still likes to bring attention to the fact that yes, even guys like him can get doctorates.

[livejournal.com profile] cellist_dana for Dana since, her name, and she is a cellist for the New York Philharmonic.

[livejournal.com profile] ferretboydraco Of course, this refers to the famous scene involving the "Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing Ferret" from GoF. And he gets twitchy like a ferret at times.

[livejournal.com profile] mumbling_truth for Poetboy, aka Todd, refers to the impromptu poem he created in class in his canon, and further more, mumbling due to his shy nature, and tendency to mumble and stammer. Yet, he's willing to speak truth via his writings and poems.

[livejournal.com profile] reluctantcleric for Partridge since while he was a Cleric, he's not at all violent by nature. Furthermore, it refers to his reluctance to the mission he was given before the beginning of the film's events.

lesser known pups: [livejournal.com profile] kawaiiorihime, because she's cute.
[livejournal.com profile] gaelic_fae_girl, because Molly's Irish, and canon's repeatedly linked her with the Fae, plus she's been described as being fey. She's had precognitive episodes, and has had visions at times (usually thought she was crazy, and had taken medication for it)
[livejournal.com profile] ushouldcwhatic - for Johnny Smith since that was the tagline from the show's opener.
[livejournal.com profile] notasaint_joan Simply because while she and the first Joan both talk to god, this one is anything but a saint. She's definitely not perfect.
And also... *g*

[livejournal.com profile] explorertruman because it was mentioned a couple of times in his canon how he wanted to be explorer, and also how he ended exploring the truth in his surroundings, and "reality".

[livejournal.com profile] makes_it_rain -- bit spoilery, but it's from episode twenty-five of FMA. Anyone who's seen it knows the line Roy says near the end, right?
[livejournal.com profile] yankeedoodle_dr -- from an episode in the first series (season~) where a film about the M*A*S*H 4077th was made. *grin*
[livejournal.com profile] whats_bad_wolf -- Series 1/26 (man I get so confused) of Doctor Who had this running plot-thread of "Bad Wolf" appearing everywhere. See the last ep for why it's so appropriate to Rose. :)

Also, just-apped...

[livejournal.com profile] dead_brit -- Because I was highly unoriginal and Mason is a dead Brit. *shifty*
[livejournal.com profile] anotherlifebro -- First three episodes of Lost S2. Says "brother" and "See you in another life" a lot. Yes, I'm apping him.
