Charlie's philosophy is--as he's expressed it to X, somewhat like that of the sensei she remembers fondly, so that is what drew her to him at first. I like that resonance, even as in so many other respects he's very different. The fact that he does discuss philosophy also pushes her to try to understand, and even though it's slow going, one day she will be able to think more abstractly. It will be mostly Charlie's fault.
