Look, talk to me here or at kingnothing_379@hotmail.com

Yeah, I realise my stuff is edging towards god-modding if that's what your worried about. I refuse to allow people to just eat Faust and put and end to things, though.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But I will gladly accept Faust being contained or punished by one stronger then the average mortal. Or everyone having their minds shielded or something.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have doen no cannon contradiction other than claiming that Faust was dead and I'd like to remind you of that.

I never recieved any e-mails. Period.

I don't find any difference between Faust being a shade and Paul being a ghost or Duke Roger being a ghost or Mordred being a ghost. Those three do stuff and fuck with people and so does Faust.

I was of the impression that people would audibly object to me if they didn't want Faust continueing his mind rape. I asked several people and am attempting to mend my ways.

And I have given everyone permission to do unto Faust whatever they wish.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And I don't have AIM or Y!M.

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi. I'm a friendly guy. please Don't godmod my char, its one fo the few online things that will piss me off. kthnx.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*roars* Look, I hardly think that Tim restraining Faust magicaly in this moment of Chaos is really that much of a problem. I'll edit the post if you like, however.

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
if you want Tim to restrain faust, that can happen... you jsust need to talk to ME about such a thing, so we're all on the same page, aye?

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok then, sir, I shall mend my ways.

But, I would just like to clarify, do I have to send you screen captures of my Hotmail inbox? I DIDN'T RECIEVE ANY E-MAILS. Whether me living in Australia or my using Hotmail has caused some problem, I don't know.

I'd like to mention that Mordred's canon is also edited from the original and you can bloody well ask Mordred-mun about it. The character was lifted from the stories and fics written by Mordred-mun.

I fixed the post.

I'll pick a Cannon and Faust will be the Faust in that Cannon. I'll do it, fine, no problem. I have no idea what a Twink is by the way.

And you can believe whomever you want as far as the e-mails go. I can't sway your beliefs. But I tell you honestly I didn't recieve them and that I have no reason to lie to you. I haven't even been punished or anything.

[identity profile] wine-women-song.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
(just a side note; did you check your junk email? hotmail sometimes filters random email.)

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure did. Empty.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So unless the E-Mails were sent more than 5 days ago, I never recieved them or accidentaly deleted amongst the 'so-and-so responded to your LJ comment/post...' E-Mails

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. You might also like to know that nearly every 100% fictional Faust's powers are twice as godly and miraculous.

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm.... Actually, I've never read of Faust having miraculous powers of regeneration or of mind raping... most of them just put this powers down to dark magic....which, y'know, still needs him to do things to activate them, spells and the like...just my 15 cents...(inflation.)

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/faust.html

All of those present him as having illusionary powers, sorcery, incredible intelligence, necromancy etc

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And I made up the regeneration I admit. I thought it would be ok considering he was a 'shade' although since this is never shown anywhere I might as well just make him an ordinary ethereal ghost.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
True. I made that up. I was chalking that up to black magic and gypsy/witch 'psychics'.

I honestly see where I went wrong and what you are getting at. I'll mend my ways and I would like to thank you for showing me. Is there any other problems I need to attend to?

And should my twink Faust just be wiped from the memory of the bar or are we going to pretend he never existed?

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Righto. Yeah, my views of violence are beyond the norm here.

Righto. Since I've wibbled on about the metaphysical I might just come up with some complex statement as to why he was that way.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My impression was that he relied very little upon the devil. Only in one source have I found where it actually mentioned the devil accompanying him, let alone doing things short of what the contract said.

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, would it be ok if I used the Faust who died horribly in the 'first Faust Chapbook' written in 1587 with a synopsis offered at http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/faust.html#1587

?

My Two Knuts...

[identity profile] pjpettigrew.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
The Faustbuch that you mention does not contain any original stories about Faust. The stories in that book had been told since the Middle Ages about such famous alleged wizards as Merlin, Albertus Magnus and Roger Bacon. The writer of the Faustbuch, a zealous Lutheran, re-told those old stories as if they had happened to Johannes Faust. One of the main points of the book was to ridicule those who had been duped by Faust.

Given that the stories are a re-hash of stories told about other men, and given that the writer exaggerated Faust's evil and abilities to produce a more powerful spiritual effect on the readers...well, it's not the greatest choice for canon.

What would you suggest? Faust's character is simply like this by all accounts. He's miraculously powerful. Several sources claim him threatening to starve a man by levitating all the pots and pans and several agree that he did indeed make limitless springs of wine.

If it is ok by the rules of the establishment I'd like to play down a little his powers, claiming he had lost many of them and their source, the Devil, upon his death like the Faustbuch claimed in the 'contract'. I do realise the heavy Christian influence- Such as Faust being torn up and hurled into a pile of manure the very second the contract ended and the Devil came to claim what he wanted. And honestly, Faust isn't the only one with Magical powers and incredible knowledge. His power doesn't exceed that of the non-mortal types and I was of the assumption that characters with this sort of power where allowed. Besides. He's a ghost now. He can barely speak at the moment, let alone unleash incantations.

And I'm pretty sure the rules do state I am allowed to have a character not based upon any canon (although I perfectly understand that characters someone invents on the spot is completely dissalowed.)

Privately, quietly, I fangirl your research skillz. It has nothing to do with any of this, but O M G. Thank you. That is all.

I'm not sure, but I think you're referring to the public domain characters, like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, who are so well-known in themselves, that they pretty much are their own canon. It's possible that the mods could declare Faust a public domain character, but since he's best-known in a literary context, I wouldn't bank on it. Your best bet is just to pick a canon source.

Re: My Two Knuts...

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Why not just use the orgininal Faust from Marlowes play of the same name?

Re: My Two Knuts...

[identity profile] pjpettigrew.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What would you suggest?

I would suggest finding a canon for Faust that is about FAUST and that is not a bunch of stories about other people with Faust's name typed over Merlin's et al.

I'm pretty sure the rules do state I am allowed to have a character not based upon any canon

Actually, the rules state that you're allowed a character in general use--like Santa Claus.

The problem with Faust is that he's a historical person AND a literary archetype. And the books, plays, operas, etc., based on that archetype contradict each other. All of what's written can't be true. It doesn't make sense.

So pick a canon. Marlowe's The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus (http://www.bartleby.com/19/2/). Goethe's The Tragedy of Faust (http://www.bartleby.com/19/1/). Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust. Gounod's Faust. Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus. Dorothy Sayers The Devil to Pay.

(Granted, Goethe's Faust is most likely out as a canon source, because in Goethe, Faust goes to Heaven in the end, and your Faust has already spent a number of centuries as a damned soul in the abyss of Hell.)

[identity profile] the-dr-faustus.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Your suggestion has been of greatest use and I shall indeed pick a canon. *salutes*

To Tim-mun:

The original Faust was a real man and no one knows a god damn thing about him. Some say he's an alchemist and some say he was a calendar maker. Suffice to say, Christopher Marlowe's Faust, despite any element of cleverness, evil and whatnot, is not the real Faust. The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus is probably going to suit my Faustus best- Marlowe's Faust was influenced by Dr John Dee and Cornelius Agrippa (or at least I am told this) and this influenced Faust is probably most accurate or good enough for me to use.

I'd like to thank all of you for your two cents and your pushes in the right direction. I'll stop using Faust(us) until I've read The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Tragedy of Faust and can make him a more accurate character.

*salutes*
