Were you caught up in the rampant speculation over the run up to the Mann vs. Machine update, especially in regards to GRAY MANN == G MAN OMGOMGOMG HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED OMGOMGOMGOMG ?

Well, probably the better question is what do you make of attempts to connect TF2 canon to Half-Life/Portal canon?

No, I wasn't. I'll be honest- I haven't actually played or touched TF2 canon in a very long time, other than the Meet The... videos. I just like my psychotic-running-around-killing-people-repeatedly setting, not having to go through all kinds of weirdness to grab hats or swanky new guns or whatever. Plus it hasn't been worth the effort or the time to sit down and find a time when people I know are interested in playing the game, and I generally don't like trying to drop in on a server full of total strangers, so... yeah. Didn't know about the speculation, not sure what to think of what you've told me.

As for attempts to connect TF2 to Half-Life/Portal, I've known about some of the basic jokes from the beginning- stock prices for Aperture and Black Mesa, that kind of thing- but I don't really think the two universes belong together. The tone's too different. The closest I've ever come to really wanting to see them connect was a fic idea I had once in which Chell rummaged through enough of Aperture Science to find the room where GLaDOS had nine VR tanks rigged up and was running simulations over and over using the guys inside as one team and carefully recorded and analyzed simulation of their own prior actions in similar circumstances as the other team, so that the whole of the TF2 universe was just one big GLaDOS-based sim being thrust on very unwilling participants.

Re Belar: of all the gods - and characters, actually, of the Belgariad/Mallorean universe - why Belar? Is it because he was the most chilled of the seven?

The overwhelming urge to have a character walk in and wig the hell out over the fact that HUMANS. EVERYWHERE.

Seriously, that's the majority of it. Originally I'd had the mental image of it being Dr. Zaius, since he has a bug up his nose about human intelligence and the lack thereof, but after reading the book I realized that he'd be no fun at all, because he's an obstructionist asshole who'd probably want to gas the whole Bar like a wolf hunter gassing a den to kill all the pups- he considers the possibility of intelligence in one human in the books to be dangerous enough that he tried to get Ulysse sent to the brain research section for lobotomy or worse. And while bad guys have their appeal, I really dislike playing assholes. So as far as other characters go for the "...HUMANS!!" factor, that mostly left either Zira or Cornelius, as the tertiary characters don't have much screen time at all to get to know them.

Plus there is something about a canon where human civilization collapsed because humanity lost all drive to create anything original and got too lazy to fight back- seriously, that's what happened to the humans in the novel. Not the Bomb. Their society had gotten to the point of not even being able to write something "as simple as a detective novel" or come up with a new game more complicated than the card game Patience, they'd completely lost all desire to create anything new. And since they'd been training apes to do their manual labor, and some of their people were working on making some of the apes smarter to make it easier to teach them... well, things kinda progressed from there. There's just something about a canon where that happened and trying to see how one goes about elaborating on that and progressing from there.

I wanted a god pup, partly because we had an awful lot of gods in the bar at the time, and partly because I thought Security needed a heavy hitter. I went for Belar because very nearly every single god in the Bar was from Greek mythology and very nearly all of them were oh-so-much-sexier-than-THOU, at least from what I recall at the time, and I wanted a cheerful god who didn't take himself seriously or smirk archly or get involved in convoluted schemes. Belar was a god of demonstrated, genuine power- not a big-G god, but still one capable of holding back the sea and raising mountains the length of a continent- and he enjoyed life and didn't have a stick up his ass, and hadn't gone crazy with weeping the way Mara did. So, yeah. Big cheerful warrior surfer dude god, that sounded right up my alley.

Oh yes. I was linked to that one the day it came out, esp. since it's been my headcanon that at least one RED Pyro is BLU Medic's ex-wife (she caught him in bed with a sniper, the divorce got very ugly, and she decided to go work for his rival company so she could kill him a lot).

I see! Makes perfect sense - Belar was easily the coolest of all of them. I regret not hanging on to Belgarath a bit longer and letting him do his 'I think you're a bit of a handful, and sometimes a prat, but I still have total respect because hello, god,' thing with him. Because that would have been a laugh. Anyway! I'm sorry he's gone, because you did a fab job with him. :)
