Varric is alive as of the start of Dragon Age 3, as he appears in the trailers and they don't look like flashbacks to me, so I'm not going to speculate on this for him yet. And I haven't decided for Ellen. Although given her life and her circumstances, there's a good chance of it being BRIGHT, WHITE LIGHT. ETA: Leesha's suggestion for Mako up above caught my eye. Ellen's is going to say DUTY. And this will not surprise her at all.
As for Shephard's, I've had his death scene prepped and ready to go in the back of my head for a long time, along with his last words. One day I'll do it up as a fic or something.
