Sam’s face is tight, his words clipped, but Gene’s in no mood for it.

‘Oh, me an’ him’s gonna have a little talk.’

‘Gene-‘

The warning goes unheeded, his temper goes unchecked. If there’s blood on his knuckles later he sold it well; worth it for the full confession, signed and sealed.

‘And what did it cost him?’ Sam asks, jerking his head at the man heaped in the corner, not answering to his name.

But Gene’s in no mood for it. He hoists the statement like a prize, waves it over the rest of CID as they clap and shout. The Scotch is cracked out, a warm-up before they decamp to the pub. Gene turns, and prods his DI in the chest.

‘Amazing what you get when you ask, Sammy-boy.’

He heads off to the party, but not fast enough to miss the words, ‘your tone’s gonna kill someone one day.’ They’re thrown at his back like a knife, all the louder for the cheering raised above them, drowning them out. He shakes it off, just one more sin to add to the many – and anyway, it was only a quiet word in the bloke’s ear. Just a little chat. No harm done at all.
