I started doing a canon-rewatch for a new app last night, and had an epiphany for how I'm going to handle the more meta aspects of canon. I think the only way to handle it is to just play it completely straight, with everything at face value. All of the weird meta in-jokes and built-in weirdness that came out of how the series was produced will just become part of the world building.
