DE: Faking it

What skill, hobby or expertise does your charrie have which you totally don't share or would do about as well at as a gecko does at flying? And what do you do to believably fake the knowledge in thread?

Sinric's singing! I couldn't hit a note with the broad side of a bus. But I shared a house with a musician for seven years. She helped me learn the emotional language of music, seeing she couldn't teach me the technical language.

Most of Jay's tech talk comes from a writing workshop I attended with Timothy Zahn on writing science for science fiction. A truly brilliant writer and a fascinating lecturer.

I'm okay at cooking, but I'm nowhere near Sunshine's level, especially when it comes to baking. I've been adding onto my culinary knowledge by collecting recipes, learning techniques, reading actual professional baking articles, and watching the more informational kinds of cooking shows for the last handful of years to help myself sell her abilities in RP, but my modest skills couldn't hold a candle to hers.

Emcee: being an entertainer. I couldn't go out on stage and perform for an audience every night, although I think it would be fun to do. My only experience is being in that audience, as I love live theater, and the more I see a particular show, the more I connect with the performers and try to reverse the perspective.

Pam: being a fashionista. I hate high heels. I never wear makeup. Dresses never fit me. However, I do like to think I have an aesthetic and know what would suit Pam based on her wardrobe on the show, so choosing entirely new outfits for her is like playing with the Barbie doll I never had.

Floki: building things. I have never built anything in my life except for maybe assembling an IKEA bookcase. But for Floki's sake I've looked up how to build an authentic Viking ship using only Viking age materials, and have gone to museums and exhibitions for more firsthand details. I know more about that now than will ever be practical in my life.

Also, Norse mythology. Before I took on Floki, I only had a vague rudimentary knowledge of it, but after, I read up as much as I could including the Sagas, and it felt like cramming for an exam because Floki had to be a believable storyteller.

You ought to come visit some day ;)
We have a couple of museums that are awesome if you're into Vikings.

I do intend to! It's a dream and a goal of mine to someday travel through Scandinavia and visit as many museums as possible. (Including the phallus museum in Iceland. Because it exists.)

I mean, pretty much anything my characters do is me bullshitting away, but especially if it has to do with combat or hunting or horses. I try to be as vague as possible about what they're actually...doing. >_>
