All right. Gotta know. [livejournal.com profile] 2ndtour_finland-mun, whose version of 'Hallelujah' is Charlie singing? :D

Rufus Wainwright's, 'cause it's on piano. His and Jeff Buckley's use the same words, I think, though. Leonard Cohen's version has a slightly different third verse.

(40-something versions of this song. I've heard four. I've got catching up to do.)

Essay? Essay? I am incredibly curious now.

I have the Wainwright, Buckley, and Cohen versions on my iPod. I adore Buckley's voice over Rufus's for this song, and there's just something about Cohen's that stands on its own. :)

Well, since it was originally Cohen's song... ;) As I understand it, anyway. And the Buckley version is a tribute to Cohen's work. Which I'm sure that you already know, since you wrote the essay.

Yay, Cohen. I love his songs and his voice.

Also, yay, Jeff. The world lost something when he died. Another of my favorites is his version of "Corpus Christi Carol," also off the Grace album. Have you read Dream Brother?

It is. It so is. I mean, I still listen to it, but it's rather frightening.

I like the Buckley, Wainwright, and Cohen versions for different reasons. The guitar on the Buckley version, combined with Buckley's voice, is incredible. Cohen's version has my most favourite verse from the song -- "I did my best, it wasn't much / I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch / I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you / And even though it all went wrong / I'll stand before the Lord of Song / With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah". And I like Rufus Wainwright in general, although I swear the man says that the Holy Duck was moving, too, in one verse...

I think Cohen wins out for the above verse. The Buckley version was my ex-fiance's and my "song"; the Cohen version seems more appropriate now, with that lyric.

Yes, I'm horribly late to this topic, but I saw it on Millichannel, and couldn't resist, as I am hopelessly freaking addicted to this song.
