Monday DE: Color theory

 Good morning and welcome to another week. Got any challenges you're going to crush this week?

As for today's topic, let's talk color and it's use. How is your canon's color palette? Is it bright or is it desaturated like a Snyder film? Do specific colors have meanings within canon? How about the use of color in meta-canon? Feel free to add any details I didn't think of in my questions.

Kylo's colour palette for canon is pretty normal, though he and his are surrounded by black because they're the ~bad guys~.

Sikozu's canon is about the same, though people have their own colour palette unto themselves. She is, of course, the Red character.

Oh god Smallville. Colour is used so much in SV I don't know that I can explain it all. Characters have "uniforms" of colour (Clark is primary red and blue, Luthors are purple, Oliver Queen is green) and these colours get shared with characters they interact with a lot.

Smallville the town is rich and bright with lots of primary colours. Metropolis is still bright with lots of blues. Otherworlds are saturated in their own kind of colour (Luthorverse is desaturated, Pandora verse is red). All that kind of good stuff.

Yamato: Digimon 01 and 02 tend to be full of bright colours for foreground details, and then muted colours and mottled watercolours for the backgrounds in the Digital World, making everything look sort of distant and unreal (which is totally for artistic reasons and not because it means they can save money and time by painting vague outlines and then having the backgrounds be fairly static).

Colours then get utilised somewhat more when characters head outside the Digital World. When Taichi initially returns to Odaiba, in a weird dreamlike episode directed by Mamoru Hosoda, one of the franchise's original creators and the later director of Summer Wars, backgrounds lose the watercolour effect but colours are extremely muted with contrasting patches of light to dark; in Serial Experiments Lain writer Chiaki Konaka's episode, he introduces the Dark Ocean, which retains the Digital World effect but has everything muted and contrast-less, and so on.

For Tri, the use of colour is probably less interesting, but prior to chapter four, the real world was always presented heavily blue, and the Digital World in red.

Characters also have their own colours, usually their Crest colours: So Yamato's associated with blue, Taichi with orange, Sora with red and so on -- those colours tend to be predominant in their partners' evolutions.

Eden: Kingdom Hearts as a whole uses very bright colours, and Chi is not the exception (and may actually be a little bit brighter than the norm). Daybreak Town in particular is full of bright purples, blues, oranges, and white.

The Unions also all have about two colours to their name: Unicornis (and Master Ira) is white and red, Anguis (and Master Invi) is light blue and dark blue, Ursus (and Master Aced) is green and brown, Vulpes (and Master Ava) is pink and light yellow, and Leopardos (and Master Gula), Eden's Union, is grey and yellow. The Master of Masters and Luxu are both associated with black.

Colour also beccomes somewhat relevant when dealing with the Chirithys: The Dark Chirithy is initially identified as such by having dark grey fur instead of silver, and as time goes on, the shade of his fur changes in tandem with the mood shift of the game.

Sherral: Colours are used to demarcate both setting and faction in Final Fantasy XII.

Is it a combination of yellows, white, pale blues, and bright reds? Congratulations, you're probably in Dalmasca, and might be near the Resistance. Is it red, black, grey, and dark orange? You're probably in Archadia, and maybe around Judge or Senate controlled parts of it. Silver, white, blue and black? The Occuria are here! Is it varying shades of green, offset by browns, silvers, and oranges? One or both of the Solidor brothers are nearby. Please watch out for them carefully.

Ellen's canon tends to be on the brown/gray side; the Fallout series has an entry under Real Is Brown on TV Tropes. Reasonable in light of the fact that there was a nuclear apocalypse two centuries before canon, but I think also at least partly tied into the way the Mad Max movies seem to have left the world with the impression that post-apocalyptic settings have to look like the Australian Outback. (The Last of Us was pretty good about countering that.) Green can go one of two ways: sickly yellowy green, which indicates radiation and/or plasma effects, or darker green, which indicates plant life and usually hope. I say usually because of a specific Vault in Fallout New Vegas where the plant experiments didn't go the way they would have liked.

Santo's canon is kind of the opposite, at least when it wasn't filmed in black and white, because lucha libre matches are basically the Mexican branch of the superhero tradition. The part that involves masks and pounding your enemies to pulp without pause like someone locked two bears in a washing machine, anyway. (American wrestling got the hyper musculature and the speeches instead.)

Pacific Rim tends towards the colors of electronic lighting and metal, I think. And lots of creepy glowing blue, because kaiju blood is creepy glowing blue.

Quicksilver's canon is pretty bright and has decent color saturation all around. Quicksilver himself is duct tape colored. His hair is light silver-grey and his clothing is generally either gray or that weird dark silver-gray that looks like duct tape. I know it's supposed to be reflective of his code name but mercury- quicksilver- doesn't look like that. He looks like duct tape.

On the challenge front, in RL, I finished the Wediko School Climb for Kids on Sunday. 46 floors in 14 minutes 33 seconds and ridiculously warm/humid conditions. woo.

Runescape is pretty brightly saturated but there is no overall theme. The gods and their followers do have color schemes. The fairies, being friends of Guthix, get a lot of greens and browns, but they do get some light blue mixed in. They are friends, not worshippers.

Amascut doesn't have worshippers in the strict sense and her "followers" wear whatever they want. Amascut does too, in contrast to her family's brown and gold theme. However, for her last four appearances in-game (development-wise not canon timeline-wise) she has been wearing the royal purple and golds of her Lady Keli outfit. The playerbase responded so well to it that it has sort of become Amascut's default iconic look even though it was supposed to just be a disguise.

Which is a bummer because I wanted the devs to keep on giving her new outfits and disguises in every quest.

The one thing she never changes is that she is always a redhead. Her hair may change shade, but it is always red. (it turns pink when she's flustered :D ) She's too proud of her mane to change it beyond lenth and style.

Okay, right, topic:

Eriond has a canon with some pretty specific color things. Each of the Gods has a color associated with them. Also, Blue = Good, Red = Bad as far as super-powerful objects go. This is also true in the Elenium/Tamuli (Eddings is... not always creative).

Evelyn actually also has some of that blue-red thing going. Red lyrium is diseased and tainted and The Worst Thing Actually. If other people take on DA, go ahead, I am blanking on stuff right now.

Lois has some variations based on canon, obviously--see Steph's answer on Smallville--but Lois herself often carries a purple theme (... blue and red mixed oh god why). Book Lois has less of this than visual media Loises, obviously--but she does have the eyes. And, well, red-blue-yellow as a combination has a very specific meaning in her worlds in general...

Anakin and R2, of course, come from a world where color is a pretty good indicator of some things! Padme is strongly associated with white and pastels, and the Jedi in general with tans and browns, to darker or lighter degrees--although some do go in for black, in surprising ways! Bounty hunters tend to go darker browns and greens and blacks. Sith like black. Because they just can't help themselves. Blue/green/yellow are the standard Good Guy Lightsaber colors, with the occasional variant (we see you, Mace). Red is, of course, Teh Ebols and also tortured crystals and yeah. There are some really interesting meta-discussions to be had around the use of white-grey-black with the Empire, and Stormtroopers being white.

As for the boys themselves, R2 of course is white and blue and while that is slightly an accident of design, I think, it fits quite nicely. (Came from Naboo, gets tangled in Jedi.) Anakin keeps wearing progressively darker colors as time goes on--and, of course, his eye color is highly indicative of what's going on with him, and his lightsaber. Luke and Leia rather interestingly follow the various patterns associated with both their parents, in different ways, with Luke leaning towards Anakin's side and Leia towards her mom's.

Tavi-- y'all, what is it with me and the red-and-blue? Is this just a fiction thing, liking them, or is this some mysterious power by which I attract all the red and blue ever? Anyway. There's quite a lot of color-use in canon, both inside it and meta. The various High Houses all have their identifying colors, which do and don't have some meta implications.

Canonically: the House of Gaius is scarlet and royal blue. Interestingly, that's very not like the other canons Good/Evil distinction, but is also obviously pretty real-world associated; for that matter, the star of the First Lord is gold, so red-blue-yellow is lurking in there. When Bernard becomes Count Calderon, he just outright picks green and brown for colors because EARTH TONES (and ignores the Rivan colors). House Aquitaine is scarlet and black and House Kalarus is canonically green and grey, I think (or that may be my choice, not sure). Of the others, both ones I picked and ones I didn't (but I don't remember which are and aren't, and the research takes hours), most were chosen or can be read either for nature, location, or connection to the House of Gaius.

The other groups have colors too! The Canim have black armor with blood-magic related inlays which denote which range they're from. The only two we see are red and black. The Marat are white-all-over (hair, pale skin) with some rainbow-ness (eyes pre-bonding). The Vord are sickly green.

Then there's the black-and-green theme going on, too. Tavi's Legion ends up, for reasons, carrying not the red-and-blue eagle but a black crow as part of their symbol--with black being distinctly not in royal palettes. And as for green, non-Vord shades of green are extremely important in that literally four (important) people in the entire series that I can think of have green eyes. The only three born with it are also born with jet black hair.

All the Aleran families with Evil People have black or grey as a color; everyone more spotlight-oriented has gold. The Canim, who could destroy the Alerans given the wrong thing but ultimately ally with them, are black with red-and-blue--just like Tavi's Legion. The Vord are icky green. Somehow the Gaius family carries symbolic red/blue/gold and physical green and black. There are some really interesting symbolic discussions to have around this, both as in-world connections, the symbolic relationships to each other, and how the Gaius family is arrogant and more or less personally built, destroyed, and rebuilds Alera. But I will stop there.

Sherlock's canon is reality-based so the colors tend not to be manipulated much, aside from color choice. That's on the darker side of the color wheel, but that has a lot to do with the location. You're not going to find bright pink and turquoise in London very often, without it making a statement ... like the pink-clad journalist in 'A Study in Pink.'

Steve's world is a comics-based one, so the colors, at least for heroes and villains, tend to be primary colors or colors that are available for comics printing. Colors of the world around them tend to be heightened a bit, to keep the heroes' uniforms from looking too garish. I have a vague thought that the colors of Steve's uniform in particular reflect the role Captain America plays in the story, but I need to think about that more in order to articulate it.

Dirk Gently's world is kind of ... magic realism, maybe? Weird shit happens, we're not quite sure why? So the weirdness of the plot is grounded in the setting, which is real-world colors, mostly green. (The series is ostensibly set in Seattle; I believe it's actually filmed in Vancouver. Both are the same kind of zone, and of course I can't remember the name of it at the moment. Temperate rain forest? Something like that.)

Furiosa's world is sunbaked and dried out, all browns and reds and a blue, blue sky. That makes when you see green for the first time an enormous shock. The arc words of Fury Road are "Who killed the world?" and you can see it struggling not to die all around. (God, I love this movie. I need to watch it again soon.)

There's a character I'm thinking of apping whose canon uses color symbolism in nearly every scene. It's fascinating to watch the analysis videos about it.

I think Cabaret had a muted color scheme, lending to the 1930s look, and depending on the scene either warm lighting with fleshtones (like literally, the dancers wear nude-colored lingerie) or stark, highly contrasted lighting. Emcee himself never wears brightly colored clothing, only black and white (and sometimes silver sequins). And it's a very subtle change, but as the show goes on, his red lipstick gets darker until it's almost black and his skin gets paler, his own deterioration mirroring the deterioration of the situation in Berlin.

True Blood pretty much has a normal color palette overall, but there's definitely a certain look to the daytime vs. nighttime scenes. Fangtasia is all gothy black and red, and so is the clothing of most of its patrons. Pam, however, actually likes wearing pinks and lavenders, but she'll go from black leather to red sequins to gold lamé quite easily.

Vikings can be very lush and rich or gray and muted. I think there's a difference between the depiction of the viking homelands vs. England. While you see lush greens and stark white, snow-capped mountains, you know you're in Scandinavia, and when you see dreary gray forests, you're in England. The colors of the ships' flags indicate whose group the fleet belongs to. Blood red/stripes is for Ragnar, blue I think was for Lagertha, whose shields were also blue. Floki himself had a specific color scheme of dark greens and browns.
