Wednesday Replacement DE: Face your fears!

Congratulations, everyone - we're halfway through the week!

Do you have a character you'd love to play, but something about them makes you feel too intimidated? Do you worry that you might not be good enough? Tell us about them, and why you love them! And if you're feeling really brave, post them below for others to tag. You might surprise yourself!

Vlad Taltos: I am intimidated by both Steven Brust's wit and the volume of canon, which is currently 15 books. Canon is kind of a mess time line wise as well, jumping forwards and backwards each book as the mood seems to strike Brust. I'd also have to have two open slots for Vlad and Loiosh, his telepathic familiar. ETA: Another trick with him would be presenting his early sociopathic self and doing justice to his learning to care about other people who have nothing to offer him.

Maximillian Sterling: He's always been tempting but the sheer volume of Robotech canon is too much for me to play. I have been tempted to check out the rebooted comic and see if that's more manageable, but haven't to date.

Elayne Kevarian: Love her and her world, but the world is so unique and she is damned intimidating, I just feel like I'd do a poor job of presenting her.

The first two I think of are Star Wars because that's the canon that's currently eating all my time and creativity. For me a big part of this is I can't predict which character is going to stick around enough for me to feel like I can write them. Cassian settled in after I read the Rogue One novelization and hasn't left.

Obi-Wan Kenobi-There's just so much history behind him and questions of timeline and everything. But I love him dearly, especially after watching The Clone Wars' TV show and reading the book Kenobi. I have a fic that I do want to finish in his voice someday but compared to Cassian with his smaller amount of canon, Obi-Wan is daunting.

Captain Rex or any clone-Again the complexity of their world and also how they're not only soldiers but made ones. I think that could be fascinating to play but also very hard.

There are other characters that I find intriguing but no headvoices for; Nick or Maree from the Magids' books, Wylan from Six of Crows and I feel like there are others I can't think of.

So much this! The reason I made a rule for myself that I must finish the canon before making a new journal or playing them somewhere. = ]

She isn't a new character, but a current one: playing Hawkeye is intimidating because she unnerves people without meaning to. There's always a worry at the start of each conversation that the other participant will freak out and leave, or be left demoralized. I don't exactly know how to fix this, except for her being less stiff, but that will take time in the bar and talking to people.

I would offer that it could also just be people getting use to Hawkeye. Look at X and how she's fit into Bar without changing a whole lot of how she expresses herself.

I hadn't thought of that. Thank you for the encouragement. Hawkeye isn't always stiff in canon; she flirts just fine undercover, and she sticks her dog in her friend's face to tease her. I just haven't found a good balance yet.

That can be a hard balance. =)

I've thought of playing MCU versions of Wanda Maximoff and Stephen Strange, but I'm not convinced I'd do them justice. There are also a couple of OCs I'd love to play, but, well, they're OCs.

How about having her come into the bar when she's off duty so she doesn't feel like she still has to be working? Might give her a little sense of freedom in the way she presents herself to others.

That's a good idea. I think it's largely the uniform. When she's wearing the navy blue, she's stiff with everyone but Mustang. I'll try civilian clothes. Thanks!

[ooc: Hi there! Would you like a tag? I could send Matt or his masked alter-ego? (I've also got Barry Allen, if you'd like a fellow Arrowverse pup :D)]

I have a journal for The Comedian from Watchmen, and I've played him elsewhere, but I know how hard it would be to play him well in Milliways.

(I know we had a Comedian ages back, but I never crossed paths with them.)

I've considered playing Mad Sweeney from American Gods, but it would likely require wayyyyyy more knowledge of Irish folklore than I have.

"Aaaaaaaaaay wizr's staff hs...."

There is some mumbling, in a rhythm which could loosely be called music, coming from under a table near the bar.

Those inclined to investigate - or unfortunate enough to trip over one sprawled-out, sandalled leg - will find a skinny, unshaven middle-aged man, mostly asleep, partially cuddled-up to his helmet and entirely reeking of cheap booze.

Captain Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Night Watch hasn't actually noticed he's not in his city any more. He hasn't noticed anything much in some time, to be entirely honest: not noticing things was basically the entire point of getting slaughtered on Jimkin Bearhugger's finest cheapest rotgut in the first place.

"Onna - onna - onna - aaaaaaaaay wizard's staff haaaaaaaaas..."
