So with all the latest character development Tom's been going through, I had a realization while driving to work. One of those "Huh, where'd that come from?" kinds of things that turn out to be kinda cool.

Before last weekend, if Tom encountered a boggart (and in HP canon, boggarts are creatures who take on the shape of your worst fear), he would have seen his nightmare vision of himself looking in the mirror and seeing Voldemort look back. This is because he was terrified of that happening, but also because it was still all about him before his epiphany. Now he would see his family in mortal danger.

And I thought, upon realizing that, that it was an interesting thing to know about a character.

So what about you guys? If your characters faced an HP boggart, what would they see?

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Timn would see one of two things. Either the door to Milliways locked, or Ace dead. Funny, the idea of the Other doesn't really scare him anymore.

When Fleur first came to the bar, her boggart would have been seeing herself age and become 'ugly' in her mind.

Now, it's a shifting image of the people she cares about most in the world dying and she can't do a thing to help them.

*pets her* Look at your character growth!

[identity profile] iwasalevel6.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You can go with one of two options:

The typical, significant-other-is-dead one, in which he would see Michelle dead, or the other typical this-is-who-I-would-not-want-to-be option, which would be to see the lonely, friendless version of himself. So, essentially, his greatest fear is to be alone.

[identity profile] iwasalevel6.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
...of course, Tony could also see a large building marked "CTU"...

A boggart for Yrael would take the form of a collar around his neck.

A red one.

Charlie: heroin, or the dead body of someone he loves, especially Seth.

Jack: a lifeless, treeless world

The others, I'm not sure. I think Boromir faced his worst fear when he was tempted by the Ring and I don't know if a boggart would inspire fear in him again.

[answering under mun journal yay!]

[identity profile] mapmakerchur.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Chur would see herself in a hospital on Anuurn, insane like all the other many spacers whose minds have snapped from the incomprehensibility of hyperspace, as being able to comprehend hyperspace better than most of her species seems pretty important to her in the books.

[identity profile] sendpeanutbtr.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I can't decide if seeing her son's death or seeing how she had failed him would be worse for her, but either way Claire's boggart would involve Seth.

[identity profile] anthy-rosebride.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
There are fears and fears, and I'm awful at quantifying abstract things. My first thought was Anthy seeing herself, free, and on her own. But based on what I remember of the scene in Harry Potter, I'm not sure that'd be it, and there are plenty of other options I can think of.

*wanders off, thinking*

[identity profile] no-prisoner.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
She's tall, with long sleek legs the rich and shining amber-brown of sandelwood, wrapped briefly in a silk robe as white as salt or sugar or very very expensive heroin. Her hair is long and coffee-dark, in twisting curls hanging down past her waist. Her nails are long and tapering and red, and her figure is spectacular, and her sharp, wicked smile seems to reach into the primal dogan of his brain and simultaneously pull the switches labelled fight, flight and fuck.

Her eyes are wide and mocking, iris edged in dusky pink and deepening into the rich rose red of heart's desire at their centers, and when he sees her there's singing on the edge of hearing.

The face is very familiar, even if the skin is not quite as dark (and isn't that a kick in balls for the ol' enlightened white boy pride), and she smells almost subliminally of peaches, but for Eddie Dean it smells like Bubble Tape and CK1 and Aqua Fresh hairspray.

There's a collar in her right hand.

"Sai Desire, I presume?" And if his voice cracks like a fourteen year old boy with a fresh shipment of hormones, we'll have to forgive him.

"Prisoner." Her voice is low, felt more in the spine and the crotch than heard. "You were never hers. You were always mine. Kneel."

Hmm, well, there are three stages of this.

Gollum would have seen the Ring being destroyed. Which was slightly moot since it already had been, but hey, he's always been good at being in denial.

After his Healing, Smeagol would have seen himself with the Ring, being taken over by and becoming Gollum again.

Currently, Smeagol would still see himself turning back into Gollum, but killing someone he loves at the same time. Most likely Val.

I think Kim already saw her biggest fear in Mexico when she saw her "dad" killed in front of her but I think anything happening to Chase or Angela would also be up there.

For Michelle I think her greatest fear is Tony dying and I'm not sure she would recover. Either that or a situation where she had to watch him die and be unable to save him. Although I think before she came to Milliways her greatest fear would have been finding herself with the virus from canon.

Wash: Niska, or, alternately, Niska going after Zoe. It'll probably be a good while longer before this changes.

Roger: ...kind of tricksy to visualize this as a boggart. Hm. Possibly a large group of everybody he's ever cared about, all of them ignoring him entirely -- and when he tries to approach them, every single one looking back at him without a trace of recognition.

My pups (Ryan Chappelle, Teri Bauer, Chris Chappelle and David Palmer) all have the same issues. Some are bigger fears than others.

Losing their loved ones is a common one. Teri is afraid of Jack or Kim being hurt or being separated from them forever. Chris, after both her parents dying, would probably have a very hard time with more people she cares about dying.

Losing control, being weak, being humiliated is another biggie. That's just an all-encompassing one for Ryan. Before he died and his death didn't make it any better. Also, Teri having to relive her rape would fall under here.

Hurting innocent people/Being the cause of innocent people being hurt/Being corrupted. This kind of did Palmer in on Day 3, I think. Knowing that he helped cover up a murder, knowing that someone forced him to order the death of an innocent man and would have kept doing so? That's what he meant when he spoke of losing his "peace of mind".

[identity profile] iwasalevel6.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of people to whom the loss of loved ones is a major fear. It's not neccessarily an easy way out.

Hm. Snow, when she first arrived, would have seen the door back home open but blocked to her(like an uninvited vampire in most canons), the battle lost, the Adversary having taken everyone out and nothing she could do to fight it.

Now . . . the twins or Bigby dead. Were it able to create a situation, returning to Fabletown with Bigby and the twins on the other side of the door, unable to get back to Milliways.

[identity profile] fairest1.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Um. Thought about it, and something worse, but Snow in my head started screaming at me and is now whimpering in the corner of my brain so I probably shouldn't say in hopes that she'll calm down. . .

[identity profile] fairest1.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Broom would see himself, enslaved again and seperated from Bar forever.

Petunia would see Dudley dead, Harry standing over him with wand still blazing.

Littlefoot would see his grandparents dead, his friends walking away and asserting that they would not play with any silly long-necks.

[identity profile] redeemed-one.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
For Anakin, it would be Darth Vader's lightsabre. Because in order for it to exist again, he would have to willingly build it. And for him to do such a thing means that he willingly chose the Dark again.

...strangely, for Anakin this is a step up from fearing that everything he loves will be taken from him. It means he's learned to *let go*.

Megwyn sees Ingress dead.

Bruce sees a faceless man pointing a gun at him, sending him to join his parents.

Jenny sees a globe, terraformed to harbor a giant lifeform that has killed off every human on the planet. It means she failed in her last act, and didn't kill God. It means that everything is dead.

Minerva sees Harry falling to a bolt of green light.

Meep!

I had purposefully not included Ingress in this (cos I like to protect the little dear). Plus, she's not a fearful child, and Megwyn helps her so much when she is afraid.

She'd see Croup and Vandemar one by one killing her family, saving Megwyn for last.

Hmm, maybe that's why I'd not thought of her. *shivers*

[identity profile] action-antihero.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Along with a lot of other pups, Jack's biggest fear would be losing Kim and/or seeing himself as evil (canon has made both of those pretty clear). But as the question is what, specifically, he would see...

He'd see Kim, lying on the ground, dead, covered in blood. And he'd see himself, blood on his hands, and a cold, crazy, evil look in his eye. Because the combination of those two basic fears basically make Jack's biggest fear of all.

Hnh. I think this very nearly came to pass, actually. Ray would turn around and find the boggan had taken the shape of a television set to CNN, and it would be showing the destruction of the entire city of New York by supernatural or paranormal means. Before the plotfoo that happened with [livejournal.com profile] doc_venkman, it would be the city destroyed and overrun by Michael Draverhaven's legion of angry ghosts, but that particular aspect of the fear's been overcome.

Basically? New York, destroyed or about to be destroyed, by something Ray either inadvertently unleashed or failed to stop. He's very big on 'I did that, I did that, that's my fault' and it only feeds into fears.

[identity profile] empath-wiggin.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ironically, what Val thinks she'd see and what I think she'd actually see are a bit different.

When she came into the bar, Val would have seen Ender dead, his eyes frightenend, and asking her why she killed him and left him to die.

Now, she thinks that she'd see Luke telling her he never loved her. But, her deepest, darkest fear is beyond that. She would see herself, and that self would have a blaster in its hand, and a smirk on her face, telling her that she'd taken over the world, and now she was more powerful than Peter.

Or something like that. Basically, Val's deepest fear is herself. No matter how much she'll say otherise.

My others: Harder to peg. I don't really know, actually.

Raph sees himself holding the ankh around his neck. He's calling Her, and she never answers. Or worse, she turns Her back on him and walks away.

Mike, is a bit tougher. I mean, he's already lactose intolerant. For him that's scary enough.

Bran knows what his worst fear is. He dreamed it.

Owen's worst fear is losing Bran -- losing him to sickness or death, to the Brenin Llwyd, to Arthur, to Guinevere, or even to university.

[identity profile] nomorethesource.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem with Cole is that he's had his fears shoved in his face so many times that he's learned to deal with them.

When he first got here, the answer would have been easy. Phoebe. But then Desire kinda took that problem away. So his greatest fear became his evil side. And now he no longer needs to deal with that. So I guess his boggart now would be himself, but insane. Like he was right before he died.

Heather: Easy answer, the door. It's still there, with the lock on it. (Well, as far as she knows. She actually hasn't checked it since she went Nightmare, and for good reason.) She fears that she will be unable to leave, and thereby trapped in a Nightmare for the rest of her life. She doesn't fear Claudia, she just despises her.

Alfredo: He's a self-centered prick. His boggart would be himself unable to sing. It's his livelihood.

Aitrus: Gehn. Due to his meeting with Atrus (his grandson) He now fears what his son has become and the downfall of his family, the last remaining D'ni.

I have no goddamn idea.

...okay, wait, I do.

At this point in time, Ron'd see people he cares about in various forms of suffering and death.

And it would somehow be all his fault. Because he was weak.

Virginia would see herself as the evil queen or something. And crazy, definitely crazy.

Rob would see a lawyer.

Vimes...I dunno. Maybe he'd see the Beast breaking loose. Or what it caused.

Walt would see nothing. He'd hear voices coming from whatever the boggart was in, and they'd want to suck him into the dark.

Harper would see the Magog. Or maybe his own belly infested.

The Evil Stepmother would see herself--as she is now, young--yet still ugly.

Gaston...would see...hell, I dunno. He's too dumb to fear anything.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2005-06-11 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Gaston...would see...hell, I dunno. He's too dumb to fear anything.

No no no . . . he'd see himself as a woman.

Or maybe without a penis.

Ah, something to threaten his manliness anyway. :p
