Hi. I play Elphaba, a.k.a the Wicked Witch of the West. Given that I'm mixing a little bit from both the musical (go get the soundtrack or AIM me to send it to you *coughs*) and the book, I thought I'd share a little about Elphie here. Especially her relationships with G(a)linda and Fiyero. (Not that I'm hinting at ALL for someone to pick those two up. Nope. Not me!) Spoilers, obviously.
Why on earth do you call her Elphaba? Baum never said that was her name. She's just the witch!
First of all, no one is ever just the witch. That's the whole point. Gregory Maguire, who wrote Wicked, came up with the name using L. Frank Baum's initials. L. F. B. El-fa-ba. See? Makes so much sense.
Okay. So, is she really wicked?
Yes. No. Something in between. She's human. She's scarred. She's green. She's the child of two worlds. And she's got really freakin' cool powers. But evil? Wicked? Well, that's up to your judgement.
That didn't help at all.
I know.
Fine, fine. Be that way. So. Who's Fiyero?
Fiyero's her lover. In the musical, he was orginially engaged to Galinda, before running off with Elphie. In the book, he was married to someone else before they started they're affair.
I'm using the musical-verision here, for their relationship.
Fiyero is a prince of the Vinkus, also known as Winkie Country. Some of the Wizards soldiers tortured him. In an attempt to save him, Elphie cast a spell.
Fiyero was turned into a Scarecrow.
Wait, THE Scarecrow?
Yes. THE Scarecrow.
Whoa. Okay. So, who's Galinda?
Elphie's lesbian lover, who later changes her name to Glinda.
...I thought you said she and Fiyero were lovers? And that Fiyero was originally engaged to Glinda?
Yes. Do not argue with me. The sexual tension between Elphie and Glinda is so thick it's suffocating.
What if I want to pick up Glinda, though, and don't think she and Elphie were lovers?
Well, thenyou're stupid just tell me. And they won't be. :) I'm not particular. And maybe they weren't "lovers" but, dude. The UST is so there. But, hey, it can be ignored if that's how you want it. Someone pick up Glinda, someone pick up Glinda. Or Fiyero. Or both.
Uh...huh. Okay. So. Tell me more about the Witch.
She attended Shiz university, planning to go into the sciences, but Madame Morrible noticed her talent for sorcery, so she ended up in that department instead. She's a champion for Animal rights. She was, basically, a terrorist, though she prefers the term rebel. The Wizard was her father. She doesn't know that. Her father was a minister for the Unnamed God. Elphie, herself, is an atheist, who has major issues with religion, and doesn't believe she has a soul. She'd like to be able to believe in some sort of god. She's responsible for the creation of the Tinman, though it was more her sister's fault than her own. Good?
Yes. But, um...Dorothy threw the water on her, so...what's up with that?
Trap doors are great fun.
Oh! Okay. So, anything else you'll tell us before leaving us with knowing only half-answers and such?
She doesn't like water.
And that's it! :)
