Joe Dick: Character Summary
It's occurred to me, with all the hubbub surrounding Jamee and Joe, that many of you probably have no idea who this asshole is. I posted a brief synopsis for Dream the other day, but I'll repost that, with some more information here, and I'll link to this from his userinfo for new players. The movie is definitely not for the faint of heart and, as usual, the game is one big walking spoiler. Giant. Spoiler. You have been warned.
So! Joe summary (with a bit of Billy summary, as you can't really have one without the other), complete with pictures, taken from callumkeithrennie.net.
The movie is "Hard Core Logo." The Setting is Canada. The time frame, mid-90's. The movie? A feux documentary. (I hesitate to say "mockumentary" for reasons that will become apparent)
The two main characters are Joe Dick and Billy Tallent. Together, they fronted the band, Hard Core Logo.
Billy and Joe have been friends since they were little. Dysfunction starts early, kids. They play together, start Hard Core Logo. It's a hard core punk band, second-rate, that has some sort of minor notoriety in Canada in the early 80's. The band breaks up, everybody kind of does their own thing.
Fast Forward 10 years later, and Billy is in California, playing for a well-known band called "Jennifur" while their guy is in rehab. He flies back to Canada to reunite with Joe (and Pipe and John, the other members of the band) to play in a fundraiser to raise money for a musician who has been shot. Things go well, and Joe talks Billy into doing a short reunion tour with the band.
It goes about as well as you'd expect. The van has a hole in the floor, nobody's showing up to the shows, Joe spends all of the money on hookers and blow, John looses his meds and goes a little crazy. They make a side stop to visit the musician who'd been shot, and surprise surprise - he hadn't been shot. Joe had created the whole lie and set up the entire fundraiser concert to get Billy to come back from California.
People are UNHAPPY.
The movie progresses, the tour goes on, we find out that Joe has most likely raped Billy, that he's ruined a record deal for the band by getting on stage and pissing in a record executive's drink, and that, well, he's just pretty much an asshole. But that much, I think you guys have already figured out.
Billy gets a call from CA, he's been asked to step in for Jennifur permanently. The director of the "documentary" finds out and decides to make some trouble by telling Joe before Billy says anything. They go to play their concert and get into a huge fight on stage. Punches are thrown, guitars are destroyed (the precious strat!) and general Bad Shit Happens.
And then Joe goes outside with the cameraman and shoots himself in the head.
The end!
Hard Core Logo. Billy is hot, Joe's a Dick, and it all seems rather explicitly sexual.
Plus, Callum Keith Rennie licks a knife.
