Bar Mod Post

I know there's been some consternation running rampant since I called all tabs last night. But I wanted to, first, point a few facts out, and second, disseminate some information.

First:

  • I have done this before. Long ago, when Bernard first became Head Barman, he called for all tabs to be paid up.

  • Did you know that Sirius Black used to close the bar for the night, and tell people to pay up? Considering that, Bernard's policy of letting some tabs go, what? A year and a half? --doesn't sound bad at all.

  • There was some ennui in the game, and it was growing. I don't know about you, but play was more exciting and more vital and downright amusing than it has been in months, across the board.

  • If you think I'm mean... Well. You should have been here a year ago. I used to run this bar with an iron hand every single crazy night. Apply to oldbies for details. Nearly everyone's got a Bernardian Fascism Story. Then I got crazy pills and calmed down, and THEN I got tired and stressed and lazy. So now I'm gonna strike a balance.

Second:

  • I will do this again. Yar. This is gonna be a regular occurence, and almost always a surprise to shake things up.

  • A common complaint I have heard is that your characters are Bound. Uh. The only thing that's keeping them Bound is you. Milliways has become a complacent fantasy bubble, where the Landlord takes you away from all your canon troubles. People don't even have to pay! Well, they do now. (On a side note, did you know that the ratio of Bound characters to UnBound characters has increased exponentially? Why? Why can't your character come and go back and forth like others? Just an observation I've made. A Binding is Insta-Plot, true, but it's not exactly revolutionary.)

  • I guess that's all for the moment. If you have questions, this is the place.

I still think it was hilarious.

Uh. The only thing that's keeping them Bound is you.

That is my favourite argument for anyone who complains about their characters' inability to do something. Thank you, Josie. :D

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, no problem. That complaint has never held water with me.

So, so glad Eddie got his tab settled before he got yanked out into his wild and hairy universe.

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding. XD

[identity profile] blackbanthaboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Woo, people are complaining?

Anonydudes ... it's a game. It's not like we have to spend real money, or feel actual hunger pains if our characters don't eat for a while. We torture our characters with a certain regularity anyway. Why not make them stress over money and stuff as well? What's it gonna hurt?

*slightly taken aback*

[identity profile] blackbanthaboy.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
PEE ESS I want to hear Bernard Fascism Stories plz!

Seeing that sign last night cracked me up. Especially when I started trying to figure out how my pups will handle this.

I think it's brilliant. Makes it all more realistic and everything, too.

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the idea, yeah. A few real life problems never hurt anyone.

I agree with Jenny, it's brilliant. I love figuring out who my pups will ask for money from, and who is going to pay off who's debts...and wondering if Jack Shepherd's checking account is still open in far off Boston. :D

I think it's wonderful fun.

Hiii-larious, even. *in best Jayne voice*

If Che Guevara t-shirts start showing up, is Bernard gonna cut a bitch?

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
TTLY.

It would be asinine for people to start a revolution over paying their bills. I don't know what I'd do beyond laugh until I pulled something.

[personal profile] inquisitivehero 2006-03-11 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Bravo. I have enjoyed this. I keep a few of my characters bound and I am still figuring out what they are doing about it. This is totally cool!

I? Think it's great. It's definitely got me thinking about how to deal with it for my pups that it effects.

....it also gave Narcissa a chance to bitch (which was totally an IC thing) which is always fun.

[identity profile] nepheliad.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, I started giggling too.

(And now Susanna can use the credit card she stole from the nurse to pay her tab!)

I approve. :) I like things that make the bar a little more realistic.

Question: So what happens in a month, if tabs haven't been payed up?

Also, in light of this, it'd be nice to know if there are in-bar job openings for things besides Security (or the brothel). Personally, I'm predicting a surplus of clean plates. :P

[personal profile] young_tmriddle 2006-03-11 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwahaha - it works perfectly with a certain plot I had in mind for months to finally happen! Look for an owl post to kick it off. :P

(Also? This is why none of my characters have ever been/or will ever be Bound!)

[identity profile] iamnotstorm.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This was the best idea ever. Seriously.

Granted, most of my pups pay as they go, Anoia in interesting kitchen gadgets last I checked.

I will discuss with John Smith's mun as to how much funding the Smiths had when they arrived.

And due to my pups making friends with each other when I ignore them, the one with a job is now covering the Bound one's tab, so, not so much with the panicking, but still, awesome idea

[identity profile] buongiornodaisy.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, revolution? My closet socialist shall not be appeased until there is BLOOD ON TEH STREETS!!!1411185

Yes. Still kidding. What Bernard did made sense, and you made a good argument. La!

[identity profile] accessobrian.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This had me giggling last night, trying to figure out the reactions of my pups.

Then I realized two of them could be paid off per Unbinding for Pumpkins mini-plot, and all the fun got sucked out of it. LA.

Oh though I do still have Chloe, Lenny and Slytherin, two of which should lend for some fun. Bar cutting Slytherin's wine off should be entertaining. XD

[identity profile] seker-pride.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)

We really need to take a survey on which characters are Bound, and whether they're Bound by choice or circumstance. Just a little something that could be fun to do. I mean, some of my own characters are Bound because of death, and some are Bound by choice, and others are here because they're waiting to be permitted to return home.

A little poll to see who's Bound and who's not.

Well it'll ease my curiosity at any rate.

Please to be forgiving that I've just woken up and am not making much sense.

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as a clarification: even those characters who are Bound by 'circumstance' are still Bound by their muns' choice. I can think of numerous pups who are dead and perhaps cannot return to their own worlds, but can freely visit the worlds of others. *nods*

In totally love this, I'm just gutted Paige is away, but I'm thinking she'll get sucked back in so I can have her freak, once I've worked out how long she's been Bound for etc.

And I don't think you're mean at all, I think it's all very funny.

[identity profile] just-a-soldier.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Aeryn, being rich still from two missions ago, will settle hers when she gets back.

But yeah, the others, it's going to be so amusing ^^; mostly because Kaye hasn't a penny to her name and Thea got pickpocketed the first time she was here. Both are bound and will remain so. Oooh, *thinks* I'll figure something. Funnity.

[identity profile] witchy-rebel.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nearly everyone's got a Bernardian Fascism Story

Aww, I feel oddly new now, even though I've been here over a year and a half. I BLAME THE TIMEZONES!

[identity profile] witchy-rebel.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I? Thought it was a hysterical - Delia was sulking, yeah, but I couldn't stop giggling. She's been mentally going 'la, la, la, I hope he never calls in my tab' for months.

[identity profile] rebootfromstart.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a good idea, and a long time coming.

(Of course, only one of my pups is Bound and he's working in the HoA anyway, so perhaps I don't have the same sense of urgency as the others.)

[identity profile] but-i-will.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Just as a question concerning dead pups: I thought they faded away after a day or two out of the bar? Which means that they cannot just be unbound.

For example, my one truly dead and bound pup, Darla, has visited other people's worlds, but she's still dead and has to come back or stop existing, or so I thought. She's not actually a problem for me because the girl's got ways of getting money, but if you ARE apping a character who is canonically dead and you've established that going out of bar means eventually ceasing to exist, is there really any other choice for them but to be bound?

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. Plenty of people have found creative ways for dead folks to exist in other worlds for a slightly extended time. Take Susan and Cuthbert and Alain, for example, who got angelically-made necklaces that provided a bit of a life-force. So, yes, with imagination it can be done.

[identity profile] spooky-shrink.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. My only regret is that I won't have enough time to put Wesley Wyndham-Pryce through a truly torturous wringer over this. Which means he'll get off relatively easy this time.

So I'm glad to hear it'll be happening regularly. XD

[identity profile] perfectblue.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 03:46 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] jezrana.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I flail a bit, because I am not sure how some of mine will deal with this.

But I also have plans forming to play characters I have not played in SO DAMN LONG, in order to have them deal with this.

So.

:D!

[identity profile] not-one-drop.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
And I have totally only been in the bar for, like, three weeks and suddenly I'm all "Oh no! Maladict angst! Shufti angst! Why does this always happen to me?"

Right, off to bug Charlotte with stupid Milliways questions and thunderstorm reports now, even though timezones suck and she's in bed right now.

[identity profile] missginnytonic.livejournal.com 2006-03-12 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was Brilliant

[identity profile] furikku.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'm just glad that my pups either take care of their finances on the spot, or are supported by others. (Particularly in the case of the little yellow beastie, who IIRC has like three people paying his tab...)

Still, this rocked hardcore and should be a more common occurrence. *Nodnod*
