As we have so many HP pups in the bar now, and as so many of them are Blacks or Malfoys, I thought I ought to link you all to this.

Black Family Tree

This is a facsimile of one Rowling drew herself and printed in a couple of British newspapers. The copy on those, at least what I've found online, is fuzzy at best, but somebody at the Lexicon cleaned it up.

It seemed useful.

So, that Lucretia and Ignatius Prewett. Is that the close relation between the Weasley and Malfoys that gets refereed to in the book?

Possibly? It looks like the pureblood families are all pretty damned closely related. Harry could be related to everybody and their house-elf on his father's side.

Well, they are British. Perhaps royalty is involved?

I've often wondered why British wizards don't seem to look to the Continent for potential pureblood spouses. When you consider that HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh are fifth cousins or something along those lines (they're both descendents of Queen Victoria, and Prince Phillip is 496th in line for the throne in his own right), it makes the pureblooded wizarding community look more like the old Hapsburg monarchy in Spain, where first cousin marriages and uncle/niece marriages were extremely common.

And the result is that they are all bat-shit insane.

Yep. So instead of the Habsburg jaw, the wizarding world got Lord Voldemort.
