(no subject)

Hey, this is [livejournal.com profile] colour_girl mun, as many of the older muns know. Anyway, I've run into a situation a couple times, which other people may run into, so I thought I'd bring it up.

You know how when you apply, you have to put a basic description about your character on their user info page? Well, I don't think people are remembering about that. Well, that that information is there. Like with my pup? She has rainbow wings. It's stated in her userinfo that she does. Yet when I talk to new pups in my attempt to spread out my RPing experience, the pups don't notice the wings. I have to almost point-blank say 'look, she has wings!' And then they go 'oh! she has wings?'

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're talking to a pup for the first time, give their user info a glance. Even if you've played with that pup with another pup of yours. You might learn something more than the entrance post/tag/user icon can show you.

This is a very good reminder. Even I have slacked off in laziness/hurry/etc and not checked out user info. I am making an effort to check everyone, even characters I've been playing with a while, to make sure I am up to date.

Thanks!

Good tips I do that though i check USerinfo before tagging . because i've had people think Ginny was older./

Amen, amen!

I've never had a problem (as there's nothing that really stands out about my pups except April's scars - but she generally wears long sleeves), but I can imagine it to be quite annoying.

Thanks for the reminder!

AMEN.

No one seems to remember things about my characters that have been around for ages. Kudos for bringing this up.

Excellent point. I usually check the info if I don't know the pup. But should probably do this more often anyway.

And also update my pups' info with any major changes...

*Looks at Ton, then at you.*

Yeah, I suppose playing with REALLY obvious injuries has made me SLIGHTLY wary of that, but I definitely don't check as often as I should. Thanks for the reminder!

I am really glad you posted this, because I definitely get the sense sometimes that people haven't looked, and it can get frustrating. Thanks!

Word!!!

With the corollary that people OUGHT to put stuff into their character journal user info, which they often do insufficiently, including what canon the charrie is from. Also, not everybody knows their canon, so brief writeups with lots of unknown context thrown about is no good.

Also, mun info (AIM, mun journal or *gasp* both) is really, really useful, but unfortunately not compulsory.

Only times I ever stumble into crackchat any more? To ask 'Is it known who the mun of pup XYZ is?' Alternatively, I might not bother, and not tag.-

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a reminder, again, that newer applicants are checked for thorough userinfos, and if they don't have it then we postpone approving them until that's done. And, if you don't know the canon? Wikipedia is a great place for a quick lesson.

Finally, the reason that personal info is not compulsory on character info pages is for the very basic reason of privacy. Some folks just do not want their RL info to be available to the masses, and we respect that. The mods, however, have all the contact info for every player, so if there's someone you want to get in touch with, we can contact the person wishing to remain anonymous and set something up.

I know this has been something you've spoken out about before, but honestly, these are all things that can be overcome with pretty minimal effort.

[identity profile] asar-suti.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, one could easily ask them to at least leave a note 'This is a 'sekrit' pup - for plotting, email [somethingorother] at gmail' if that is the case, then you a) have someplace anonymous to make contact and b) know it's supposed to be secret and can tag them; you're not supposed to telepathically guess who the mun might be and tag or not-tag accordingly.

Yes, these things can be overcome - by going into crackchat and asking. Which I do if the charrie really, really interests me. The last one I did it for, I think, was Jadis; that way, I met Clare, with whom I now regularly write in our other game and here.

But most of the time? I don't really bother. Say sorry.-

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think if there's no contact information posted, then it is considered a "secret" character, in terms of who's playing it. I don't think it's ever the case that you're supposed to telepathically guess who the mun is; and I think, as players, we have very few people who we would intentionally not play with for one personal reason or another, which is the only case where it should ever ever make a difference who the mun is.

And hey, if you don't wanna bother? That's your prerogative. I suspect you miss out on some good RPing, but it's not the end of the world. All I'm saying is that there are lots of good reasons for people to remain anonymous. I myself have a character without any contact information listed on the info page, because it's difficult to be treated the same as any other player when you're a mod. So I don't share who I am. However, if someone were to go to the mods and ask to be put in contact, or leave an OOC note in one of my posts -- absolutely, I'd make the communication happen.

For me, what matters is how the character is written. If you (using the hypothetical 'you' here, not saying, YOU MARU XD) are interested in a character, and you're intrigued by the characterization, then tag 'em. If you have that reaction, find out who plays them, and go "Ew, I hate the way she writes [random other character], no way am I gonna tag this one," then I think that's unfortunate. That's really the crux of it, to me.

WORD.

No-one ever seems to remember how hard it is supposed to be to meet Sam's gaze at all, never mind for any period of time.

Tentacles. I feel like I have to write tentacles every time. La.

Thanks for posting this, really. Waaaaay too often I need to make a point of mentioning the six-foot-long weapon that Ichigo hulks around on his back, because if he doesn't, nooooooobody notices the sword at all.

Bugs the heck outta me...

My pup is almost seven feet tall and bright green. Here I thought it was a testament to the jaded denizens of Milliways that many don't seem to notice. ;-)

You make an excellent point. I always try to look at user info, and it can be a tad frustrating when virtually nothing is written about the character. It really helps when distinguishing characteristics are noted.
