MOD POST ATTN: ALL PLAYERS

Please do not overreact to what I am about to tell you.

As many of you have most likely heard, LJ is responding to abuse reports regarding illegal activities listed on interest lists in personal journals and communities. The way in which they are responding is to permanently suspend these accounts without recourse. [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies, a four year old Harry Potter slash community/archive, was caught up in this for listing incest. Four years of fic was lost, and LJ has said that they cannot unsuspend the comm for the maintainers to edit the interests or even pull the content to archive elsewhere.

What is most relevant for us is that [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93 lost two RP characters because they listed illegal practices in their interests.

Please look at this post here to learn more about who is reporting these journals and communities and why. This is not LJ's fault.

What this means for you: You need to personally look at each one of your pups' info pages and take out any interest content that can be interpreted as illegal. Incest, assault, beating people up, even perhaps stealing or piracy -- LJ has refused to break it down into niggling categories and has decided to cover its ass in the most comprehensive way possible, which is something I do not blame them for in the least. What we have to do is protect ourselves, and be smart. The interests list does not play a huge part in our particular game; it's no great loss to edit it.

This is not, however, a modly directive of any kind -- you are free to do as you wish at your own risk. We just want you guys to be protected and to write as much as you want for as long as you want here. And if that means taking "diddling kittens" off one's interest list, then so be it. (Sick fuck.)

One last thing: Please, please, please tell your friends who don't check the Back Room much.

Thanks guys.

<3

ETA: In the interest of keeping yourselves informed, I suggest you friend [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, which is covering this as it happens.

Well then! *deletes Bond's interests accordingly*

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Silliness.

Keep an eye on the metafandom comm I linked to in my edit. It's useful for things like this.

[identity profile] buongiornodaisy.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I got a tab open for it, even if I'm now distracted by the bajillion FanLib debates linked on it.

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahah yes FanLib is the zeitgeist du jour, is it not?

[identity profile] buongiornodaisy.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It is a veritable smörgåsbord of wank!

I've gotten some more information. This is the tidbit from the Abuse team someone with a deleted journal got back:

Your journal and/or its associated profile or interests has been reported to us as containing material which expresses interest in, solicits, or encourages illegal activity. As this is a violation of both LiveJournal's Terms of Service and United States law, we have permanently suspended the journal.

If we become aware of any additional violations of LiveJournal’s policies or United States laws in the future, we reserve the right to permanently suspend any other journals you may have and terminate your account without warning.

I am most concerned because this includes not just the interests, but the profile and content of the journal as well.

Jesus.

Guys, we're all on our own with this. Edit as you see fit.

[personal profile] agonistes 2007-05-29 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Just for extra clarification's sake: this is the interest lists, right? And not the bio section of the profile. Everything I've read about this says it's just the interests section, and not the bio section, that's the focus of the crackdown thing.

(Reason for making/discussing the clarification: [livejournal.com profile] funnyasallhell. I can remove certain things from his interests, and at least theoretically that makes him safe, but there's content that's a little questionable in the bio section for the sake of other players who don't know Deadwood canon.)

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Just above your comment you'll see that someone got ahold of the Abuse Team's stock response to this and they are including profile/journal content as a reason to get TOS'ed.

I don't know what I'm going to personally do about that, considering Bernard MAKES BOMBS WHAT BLOW SHIT UP. I guess I hope that no one effing reports him and that's that.
mendanddefend_archive: (WTF?)

[personal profile] mendanddefend_archive 2007-05-29 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I take "world conquest" off of [livejournal.com profile] f33dm3's interest list, or will people understand that that's facetious?

This is why I'm glad never took the time to fill out that section of the profiles. xD;

[identity profile] red-cg-insanity.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
i agree here, there is a reason i never fill those parts of the profiles out. That and i have a hard time not putting the same thing over and over again... OH ADA!!!

Well, I guess Gibbs will now have to settle for "keeping to the code" and "Gore Verbinski films" instead of, you know, p***cy.

*giggles* privateering?

[identity profile] pirate-gibbs.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
THe pup would have me inform you that privateering was a different manner of action, that required both allegiance to a country and a willingness to share the wealth with that country. Never mid that you cannot raid ship from your own country. (I thought about it, but I am stickler for what little historical accuracy I can find in these films.)

@_@

Apparently the LJ abuse team does not subscribe to the concept of "happy funtime games." Or "fiction."

I had those on my interests, but then I was forced to delete them.
