"And, finally, we're done"

And with this post by Behrooz, Laylet al-Masir draws to a close.

While this plot began in February,

For both pups and muns, this story began over two years ago. For us, it was June of 2005 and for our pups, April 2010.

A nuclear disaster seemed imminent and there was only one person who had information that could prevent it, Lee Jong, a Chinese scientist. Fearing that he would face criminal charges for his role in aiding terrorists, Lee takes refuge in the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles. Knowing that Lee is their only hope in stopping the nuclear missiles, former President Palmer (working with President Logan) calls on ex-CTU agent Jack Bauer to infiltrate the consulate and extract Lee.

He agrees and though they do manage to get Lee out, the raid quickly turns sour. Not only is Jack spotted by video surveillance but a Chinese diplomat is accidentally killed during the raid. Though he was shot by the Chinese guards, the Chinese government blames Bauer and the other members of the covert ops team. Armed with the surveillance video and the confession of another CTU agent who'd been a part of the raid, the Chinese demand that the US hands over Jack Bauer. The U. S government balks at first but then seemingly acquiesces, promising to turn Jack over to the Chinese.

They don't. Going on the advice of his Chief of Staff, Walt Cummings, Logan plans to have Jack killed by a Secret Service agent. Mike Novick, who also works for Logan, finds out and warns Palmer, who in turns, warns Jack.

Jack, along with his friends - Tony Almeida, Michelle Dessler and Chloe O'Brien, stages a plan to fake his death and elude both the US and Chinese governments.

It works. As far as the world is concerned, Jack Bauer was shot and killed by a Secret Service agent while resisting arrest. The people who know otherwise are David Palmer, Tony Almeida, Michelle Dessler, Chloe O'Brien, Kim Bauer, Chase Edmunds and Chris Chappelle.

Leaving his life behind him, Jack spends as much time as he can with his friends and family in Milliways. Outside of the bar, he lives under the alias of Frank Flynn and moves around the world, trying to evade capture and eventually settling in Canada. Old habits die hard, though, and when he stumbles on a terrorist scheme in Toronto, there's no other option for Jack but to stop them. What he doesn't know is that his actions haven't gone unnoticed. Disgraced CTU agent and Jack's former mentor, Christopher Henderson informs President Logan of this fact. Logan realizes that if they know, it's only a matter of time until the Chinese figure it out.

Jack returns to Milliways and, for a time, life seems to go well for him. After months of letter-writing, Jack is reunited with the woman he loves, Chris Chappelle. Their reunion is cut short, however, when the Chinese find and capture Jack. Before they do, Jack makes one frantic call to Chris, warning her.

Two days pass without any sign of Jack, until Chloe calls Chris with a lead, she's tracked Jack's last cellphone signal to the port of Vancouver. Not long after that signal, a ship heading to China left the port. A few weeks pass before, Tony, Chris and Chloe have enough information for a reconnaissance mission to China. It doesn't take them long to find out where Jack is being held and knowing there's few people they can trust, Chris goes back to Milliways to get reinforcements.

Tony, Chris, Chase, Behrooz Araz and Richard Sharpe go to China to rescue Jack while Chloe and Michelle monitor the situation. Their mission runs into a snag and only Behrooz and Sharpe make it back to Milliways. Tony, Chris and Chase are taken hostage along with Jack. Wanting revenge for the guards killed and, more importantly, wanting to break Jack, his captors kill Tony in front of them.

Later, his captors give Jack an option, if he cooperates with the Chinese and goes on one mission for them, Chase and Chris would be freed and allowed to return home. If he doesn't, they'd be killed. Desperate to save them, Jack agrees. Later, he would find out that his mission is to kill the Chinese president, his captor's intention being to install someone else, someone who would be more agreeable to America's designs on the oil-rich fields of Eastern China and Central Asia beyond that.

Back in Milliways, Ryan Chappelle tells Kim what he'd found out about the mission from Sharpe while Behrooz recovers from his wounds. Kim realizes that if there's a chance to save the two people dearest to her, she has to take it. She and Ryan, enlist the help of Nita Callahan, Kit Rodriguez, Merriman Lyon and Moiraine. The four join Lyrae Addam, Kim, Behrooz, Sharpe and Chloe on a return mission to save the four hostages. They split into two groups, one group sets out to find Chase, Chris and Tony, the other to find Jack. They succeed, easily overpowering the Chinese and rescuing the remaining hostages. There's little joy in this victory when the rescuers discover that Tony didn't make it.

After they heal, after Michelle finds out that Tony was killed, after the wake, after the funeral and even after the US government finds out what happened in China it's quiet for a while and a new normal is found.

This peace doesn't last long.

As part of the deal his mother, Dina Araz, made with the government to protect her son, Behrooz has been in the Witness Protection Program since the events of April 2010. This allows him something of a normal life, going to school, holding down a job, but the only people alive who know his real name are in Milliways. And this life isn't without a cost, as the government sees fit to request his help on certain missions. Not having much room to refuse, Behrooz does their work for them.

In the summer of 2012, just a few months after the mission in China, Behrooz is living in Northern Virgina as Orhan, a college student and store clerk. While attending services at the mosque, he is approached by members of a cell there. Recognizing them for what they are, he alerts his handlers. They want him to infiltrate the cell and he refuses until they let him name his terms and an agreement is found. Behrooz is accepted by the cell and his handlers promise this mission will be a short one.

They were wrong.

July third, at the Taste of Chicago, is the first attack. Whatever hope there was that it's an isolated incident, is dashed the next day after the attack in Boston. The day after that, it's Houston, then Las Vegas. While Behrooz gets closer to finding out the cell's plans, the rest of the country is thrown into chaos by these events and CTU isn't making progress. After losing an agent, Curtis Manning, in an undercover operation, they're left with few leads on the group behind the bombings.

During this time of fear and hatred, innocent people are the victims in more ways than one. Detention centers to house "terror suspect" soon give way to plans for internment camps for Muslim-Americans. While most politicians, including President Logan, go along with this plan, his opponent in the upcoming election, David Palmer, does not. While on the campaign trail in Seattle, he speaks out against the camps, a moment of hope and reminder of goodwill that's all too brief. Early the next morning, Palmer is assassinated.

There's no time to mourn though, as Behrooz finds hints of the cell's big plan and Jack is framed for the murder of David Palmer. Kim, Chase, Chloe and Michelle plead Jack's innocence to Bill Buchanan, director of CTU. He wants to believe them but the evidence is too overwhelming to ignore after David's brother, Wayne Palmer, calls and gives a possible motive. Four years prior, then-President David Palmer was contacted by the terrorist, Stephen Saunders, and given a "choice". He could have Ryan Chappelle killed or Saunders would release a weaponized virus that could kill an untold number of people. With few options, Palmer turned to Jack for help and when he had no other choice, Jack executed Ryan Chappelle. Now, involved with Ryan's daughter, Chris, Bill knew it was possible Jack and Chris conspired to kill David Palmer out of revenge.

While unknowingly being framed for murder, Jack and Chris are captured by hitmen pretending to be Secret Service agents. Narrowly escaping death, they find the man who killed David Palmer and contact CTU. They talk to Kim who agrees to help them but she's discovered and when she refuses to talk, she's interrogated by Agent Mike Doyle. Michelle tries to get another CTU agent, Milo Pressman, to help her stop the interrogation but before they can do anything, CTU receives the information that clears Jack and Kim is in the clear.

Not that it makes Jack any happier, when he finds out what happened.

Across the country, Behrooz is finding the relative calm worrying. He's right to feel that way as he soon learns what his mission in the cell will be. Though he warns his handlers, that information isn't enough to stop a dirty bomb from destroying the city of Valencia, California. As people worry and mourn, Behrooz races against the clock to prevent another nuke from laying waste to Washington DC. Through their bond, Kim figures out what happened to him.

Just before the bomb goes off, Caitlin Chappelle, Chris' sister, is informed that her life is in danger. As one of the staffers that was with David Palmer on the morning he was killed, it's suspected she might know something about his assassination and that she and her sister would be better off in a safe house. The man who tells her all this, introduces himself a CTU agent and friend of Jack Bauer's, Christopher Henderson. It's not long till Caiti finds out the truth is much more sinister. Chris fears the worst as time passes without word from her sister and no clues.

Investigating the bomb, Michelle finds a curious set of numbers that Jack recognizes from his time working with the Department of Defense. It's a Nuclear Disarmament Program code hidden in the pages of Palmer's files. This clue leads them to Omicron International, a corporation in charge of getting rid of old nuclear warheads. The project manager is none other than Christopher Henderson. With proof of his involvement, Jack breaks the news to a disbelieving Kim. In turn, Kim informs Jack that Miriam, Henderson's wife, was currently baby-sitting Angela, her and Chase's young daughter. They, along with a team from CTU, hurry over to confront Miriam and look for Christopher. But it's Henderson who gets in touch with them, calling Chris Chappelle and telling her that he has her Caiti and he's willing to make an exchange for her sister's life. As he wanted, Chris contacts Jack and they go to the bank on Henderson's instructions, retrieving a safety deposit box containing a memory stick. Chris and Jack then head to the airport, where they rescue Caiti and capture Henderson.

President Logan is not happy to learn his partner in crime is now in CTU custody. He orders Walt Cummings to fix this problem while Mike Novick eavesdrops on the conversation. Jack interrogates Henderson but his former mentor refuses to break. It would appear that CTU has hit a dead end in their quest to find the third suitcase nuke before it explodes and that's not their only problem.

CTU is infiltrated by terrorists who have that third suitcase nuke with them. In what they hope to be their definitive strike against the United States, they plan to broadcast their triumph over the American government before they detonate the nuke. After Jack, Mike Doyle and the rest of the remaining CTU: LA field teams are sent on a wild goose chase, they find out what's happening at CTU. The two men, along with Kim Bauer, sneak into CTU knowing they have to act before Division can and before the terrorists do. What they don't know is that Logan has given orders to bomb CTU, not only to prevent the nuke from doing worse damage but to also take care of a few loose ends. Before that can happen though, the three manage to stop the terrorists and secure the bomb.

Their work far from done, Chloe finishes decrypting the memory stick they confiscated from Henderson and realize the conspiracy goes deeper than any of them ever imagined. The news that Henderson was working on the orders of President Logan rattles the group. And for Michelle, the damning news is his involvement with Jack's capture by the Chinese and, because of that, the death of her husband and the father of her unborn child. Armed with a gun, she makes her way to CTU Medical and despite Jack's pleas to reconsider, kills Henderson.

Down a witness and knowing the information from the memory stick isn't enough yet to thwart Logan, Jack enlists the help of Mike Novick. Mike agrees to do everything he can and asks Martha Logan, the First Lady, and Secret Service Agent Aaron Pierce for their help. Like him, they were all good friends with David Palmer and want to see justice served. While the First Lady keeps President Logan busy, Agent Pierce sneaks Jack into the Logan residence. They wire an unoccupied bedroom in the house, and allow CTU and the Attorney General to listen in as Jack confronts Logan with everything he's done. Logan, however, admits nothing and when Jack lets his guard down, the President alerts the Secret Service who come in and arrest Jack. Faced with the possibility her husband could get away with everything, Martha flies into a rage, attacking him. Believing he is no longer in danger, and too angry to think clearly, Logan admits his guilt while trying to reason with her. She refuses to listen and he threatens to have her locked up in a mental institution if she defies him again. Not knowing that the room was bugged, he steps outside only to be arrested by Agent Pierce, his confession enough to remove from office.

After saving the nation's capital, Behrooz is reminded once again of the axiom dictating life in the 24 universe, no good deed goes unpunished, when his handlers bring him to one of the preliminary internment centers where he'll be staying for a while. Ostensibly, for his own safety. There, as Ramadan begins, he meets an old friend and not knowing what else to do, they pray.

It's been a long, long, strange journey to bring what started as a natural whim to follow canon and ended up with us building our own little universe. I want to thank everyone who was involved with these plots. All the 24 muns who were involved, the non-24 muns that came along for the ride with Operation Shu Guang and made it that much better and everyone who has been following these plots and encouraging us whether it was individually or as a group - THANK YOU.
