Why Lynette is an Utter Idiot With No Pain Tolerance

or
How Door Got to Stay at Milliways All Day

My car doesn't have air conditioning. So, driving back from New York the day before yesterday, the windows were open. And, being the cool cat I am, I had my arm out the window.

Needless to say, I got home with a relatively nasty sunburn, which hurt for a couple days, but wasn't causing any major inconvenience.

And then, this morning, ten minutes before I was supposed to leave with my mom for lunch and bookstoring, it started itching - the itches where it STABS into your ARM with the PAIN. I was walking around twitching and trying very hard not to curse.

A hot shower, aloe vera, lotion, and two ice cubes later, it still itches, although not as badly, but lunch is cancelled regardless, because a twitching, squeaking person is not the most fun to have lunch with.

My thoughts? "Sad, no lunch with my mum and OW MY ARM." Followed closely (or, possibly preceded by) "Milliways! Hurrah!"

That twelve step program sounds like a good idea right now.

Catatonically, I would imagine.

The boy's got willpower. :D

About two years ago, I went to California for a conference, and had a day off, which was spent with friends at the beach. I didn't realize until much later that afternoon that my sunblock had worn off. Massive nasty sunburn over half of my body - neck, arms, back, legs, chest above swimsuit. It was bad. Took a month to heal properly, and I still have tan lines on my torso from it. Zee pain, she did not like me.

I tried a lot of remedies, and found something really good. See if you can find Banana Boat Sooth-A-Caine. It's a spray gel, with aloe vera and vitamin E to moisturize skin, and (best of all) menthol and lidocaine to numb that puppy but good while it heals. It's not greasy, either. I could actually move and wear clothing without pain after that stuff. Seriously, give it a shot. If I had my car right now, I'd even bring my bottle to you. (I saw in another thread where you're in DC. I'm in Baltimore.) It'll get rid of the OW MY ARM.

*nods* Yup. Just signed on for my fifth year here. It's so hard to do anything without a car, though. At least, without a car and without money. If you have the money, it's more manageable.

The only problem with the stuff is that it's wildly addicting. It's eventually like, "Whoops! I felt a twinge. Time for more spray! Ahhhh." So sad.

Well, the first four years were spent in undergrad at Hopkins. I just graduated in May, but won't be heading for grad school for at least another year. I need some time to resolidify my brain. I'm just spending this year working. (Or will be, if I ever find a job.) I figured I might as well stay where I am as not.

Ah, but this is a good addiction. It doesn't kill your time. Just gets you hooked on skin numbness. ;)

I nearly did that, but was informed by the committee in charge of my very generous scholarship that their generosity did not extend to years off. So I decided to shove myself through in four years. I now feel dumber than when I started, because my brain just does not want to function.

Where's college for you?

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-13 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I've heard of both. My condolences on the length. I've got five years, minimum, of grad school ahead, and frankly, that scares me.

You're telling me. It's nearly $40K a year at my alma mater, when all's said and done. I couldn't afford that on my own for one year, let alone the two or three that I'd have been stuck with if I took the time off from school.

I suppose that's true. I'm not exactly ready to be doing anything 'real'. Heck, I'm still in denial that I won't be attending classes in the fall.

Wow. That's nice. I have to go back to Ohio if I want to use the in-state tactic. I don't think I care to do that. No offense to Ohio.

Heh, I don't mind. I'm just not sure you want me to go political. I was raised on the stuff, and I get a bit reactive at times. I'm open-minded, I just like to debate. I'll try and restrain myself, though. ;)

Sorry to barge in...you're from Ohio, originally? Whereabouts?

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-13 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Barge away. I'm from the northwest corner. Defiance, if you've ever heard of it. It's about an hour southwest of Toledo, and forty-five minutes east of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It's in the middle of Cow Country.

*Agrees with the "go to milliways in spite of pain and get to spend more time there because of it" sentiment*
