Hey gang! I would like to introduce you to a confusing person: Kim.
If you're not familiar Patricia C. Wrede's Mairelon the Magician, you should go buy it right now here are the pertinent facts: Kim's a London street-rat, c. 1815 (a couple years before canon), a decent pickpocket and an excellent lockpick.
Kim is also a she dressed as a he. Which is where the potential confusion comes in.
Kim spends seventeen years passing for a boy (with considerable help from her friend malnutrition). She's good at it; the first person in canon who recognizes her true sex is a spy. Of course, when she comes to Milliways, she's going to be running into a lot more people who've had training to observe people closely, or who can smell the difference between male and female, or who are telepathic, or whatever. This is cool! This is what Milliways is about.
However. I do request that if your character fits into one of the above categories, or is otherwise liable to notice that Kim's a girl, please get in touch with me before outing her. I'm not entirely averse to the idea (even if Kim is), but I would prefer to talk with you before going there. Communication is love, yes? Yes.
I am SO excited to start playing her. :D See y'all in the bar!

I think she should meet Emma Bishop, who comes from a country much like Edwardian Britain on a sort of alternate Earth. She's a detective and will see right away that Kim's a girl, but she's not going to out her. Are you playing her pre-canon or what?
no subject
A couple years pre-canon, yes -- just before the constables break up Mother Tibb's little gang of Dickensian street thieves.

Angel would probably work it out, given his experience with people who cross-dress for fun moreso than profit, but he wouldn't say anything to anyone but her. The rest of my characters, with the maybe-slightly-possible exception of Morwen (we can figure that out if they ever thread), likely wouldn't have a clue, though.
But yes. KIM! (I haven't read those books in years, but I have them!)

Who are your others, besides Morwen and Angel? I have a terrible memory.

Also Erronius, if I can ever get him IN the damn bar. He'd probably go 'pardon me, young woman' by default, just because he does that to everyone in canon. XD

And some of my pups are sharp. I'd say the only ones who might definitely notice though would be Kuan Yin (bodhisattva and goddess so knowing true natures of people) and Johnny Smith (from Dead Zone series) since he's a psychometric psychic.
But looking forward to seeing her in the bar nonetheless!

Yyyeah, goddess and psychic, that sounds fair. *grin*

And I don't think I have any characters that'd notice...Ganymede's a few millenia old, so I guess, in a stretch, he could figure it out, but it probably wouldn't strike him, really. And Momiji's a quasi-crossdresser, most of the time, but not in a way that would give him any real insight into trying to look like the opposite gender.

Spoon: Well . . . yeah, that too.
Kim: CRAP. --Not that I have to worry about being tracked from crime scenes. Or anything.

. . . No, but you're bloody intimidating as is, anyway.

Death - no question about him knowing. Out of all my characters, he might be the only one who actually cares, in an intellectucally curious way.
Cera - all humans look the same to her. I figure she'll smell/mystical animal snese it, but she won't realise Kim's supposed to be a boy.
Nanny - No question, again. If she couldn't tell a simple matter like girls dressed as boys, she wouldn't be the second greatest witch in the Ramtops. She will be subtle and senstive about it, though. Nanny respects people's right to be who they want to be.
Karolina and Mel won't have the foggiest. (Unless Mel touches her with telepathy all working, but she probably won't.) Those are the two I'm more likely to tag with, because they happen to have a situational affinity to street rats. :-)

I don't actually forsee it being a problem, because I fail at tagging out and you're likely to have outed your character some other way by the time I even get mine back in Bar. >.>

he's an assholehe doesn't really like kids to start with. That's assuming he realizes she's pretending to be a boy in the first place...which is also likely.

However, out of my other pups, if Kendra here ever finds out? She'll be SO glad to meet another chick with short hair in Bar.
Seriously.

Remy, being a thief himself, (and good with people/knowing girls like that *cough*Belle*cough*) would probably figure it out.
Neither of them is liable to out her though, not without damn good reason.

(Though the background interference from Milliways itself could always cheerfully wreak havoc on that, if you'd prefer. I am easy like pie.)

I love Kim. Oh yes. And would love to thread with her. >:D
Um. River I think would know, because... River. She would not especially care; we can talk about whether you want her to show any sign that she realizes, when/if they meet, because this is River and her conversational patterns are... haphazard. If she knew Kim wanted it to be a secret, though, she wouldn't tell. (Except by accident. But usually she's pretty good about that.)
Lan I think would also twig fairly quickly, because he's very, very good at reading body language. He wouldn't say a thing (except probably to Nynaeve and maybe Moiraine), though, nor show any sign that he'd noticed.
Piotr, Regan, and Will are all pretty likely to be fooled, though, given how good Kim is at passing.

Marlowe...would. He's a spy, and a very intelligent, observant one at that, but he wouldn't out her. He's spent nine years being someone else, he isn't going to out someone else.
(well, not unless it was profitable, but different worlds!)

And Marlowe sounds fair. I would love to see them interact -- she could get some experience with English spies. He wasn't spying on the French by any chance, was he? *grin*
no subject
Yes, yes he was, actually! He spent so much time over in France that Cambridge was all set for accusing him of being a Catholic himself and not giving him his degree, until they got a message from the Privy Council going 'he was on her Majesty's business. Give him his Masters, now, thank you'
And then it was the Dutch, and then just English folk. But, yes, he started off spying on the French!
