Daily Entertainment.

NOMINATIONS WILL STAY OPEN UNTIL TOMORROW MIDDAY EST.

Anyone else had reality screw with the fiction in their head lately?

Example:

My boyfriend is in love with the Dresden Files, and recently Netflix-ed (yes it's a verb) the tv series, and lent them to me as well. While watching 'Inside the Dresden Files' I realize that Paul Blackthorne (Harry Dresden) has got this adorable British accent, while Terrence Mann (Bob, here portrayed as human-form and v. v. British sounding) is from Kentucky.

My mom goes, "Oh yeah, there's a lot of Manns in Kentucky," which, when you're listening to that sentence and not reading it, makes you twitch amusingly.

And then I got chastised for not assuming a last name like Blackthorne was British. *chuckles*

Anyone else?

Also while I am thinking about it: I want to know who has the biggest plothole in their canon! And here I am talking sustained plotholes, not ones that get resolved in later canon *eyes Bootstrap Bill*.

Here's my nomination: If Ned brings dead things back to life, even the fruit he bakes into his pies, how does he eat?

All nominations will be organized into a later poll and posted in the back room to vote upon. :D!!! Please put NOMINATION in the subject line so I can find it. Maybe I'll even make a prize!

ETA: Since it is rapidly occuring to me that there are some canons with more holes than plots, pick your favorite, and/or the one most likely to go "A SMALL CHILD IN AN EYEPATCH WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT ONE AND TO FIX IT WOULD HAVE COST YOU NOTHING, YOU DORKS."

Does this help at all? *shrug* I dunno. Pick your favorite!

Dude, 24 fen know full well that Paul Blackthorne is British.

I have nothing useful to contribute; I'm terrible at finding plotholes, although since I play a Smallville pup (theoretically *cough*) it's probably a safe bet that I could win this if I really tried. :D

What I actually want to say here is: why is it that actors are always better-sounding when they're faking accents not their own? I give you James Marsters, Hugh Laurie, and Sendhil Ramamurthy for examples. Hell, I'll throw in Masi Oka while I'm at it. It makes no sense.

For big plothole?

[livejournal.com profile] twoeyesonthesky's universe is made ENTIRELY OF PLOTHOLE. Okay, folken, explain please to me how an animal like the dragon can subsist entirely on ash. Where's the mass coming from? Why has it got teeth if it eats ash? Frell, where are the nutrients coming from? And the part with one male being sufficient for a breeding population for an entire planet- I don't think so! The London male would never actually BE in London, because he'd be so busy flying over every dragon nest on the planet to spawn off the next generation! Not to mention that if they're eating all the ash of all the burnt living things then where the hell is photosynthesis happening? I assume it's oceanic but... ARRRGHGHGHGHG.

*pant pant pant*

A distant second: [livejournal.com profile] not_toothfairy. So y'all traveled through the INKY ABSOLUTE COLDNESS OF SPACE but the Arctic froze Megatron into stasis lock? Whut? ... although admittedly Alan Dean Foster patched that one in Ghosts of Yesterday, where he said that it wasn't so much the temperature as going from red-hot re-entry speeds straight to OMPWTSNAALBBQ* COLD that flipped his stasis lock switch. The conditions in his hangar just kept him in that state once he got there. It sort of makes sense given that the humans never did manage to freeze Bumblebee.

STILL.

My pup has been on Her Majesty's secret service for over 50 years and is somehow not 70. He has also changed his appearance at least six times in "official" canon, yet no one has batted an eye when he changes not only appearance but apparent age.

He has only once batted an eye at the change in his superior's appearance, and that was only to establish that his superior was, in fact, an entirely different person now.

He has not batted his eye at the number of times his best friend fo'evah has changed his appearance, not even when he turned from a young, hip American to a middle-aged man with a fiancee/wife (?????) in the course of two years. Chances are he still won't if his BFF turns from black to an ethnicity that is clearly not black.

This, of course, is just the tip of the iceberg. Or at least as much as the iceberg I'm willing to chip in to.

Batman (1989) - Batman destroys the evil chemical factory. The one producing all the Smilex products. What happens to the toxic debris. He then sends the Smilex-filled balloons out to sea. What happens to them, as well? (Of course, all that Smilex in the air could account for why the third and fourth films are so campy. Everyone in Gotham has gone just a wee bit off the deep end.)

Star Trek II - What the hell did Spock do to the warp eninges? He enters the chamber, reaches into the device, and then VOILA, instant warp power. I know this film predates the case of OCD known as the Next Gen Technical Manual, but even on the old series, it seemed like it took more than entering a room and tinkering with a thingee. (And if that was all it took, why couldn't someone put on a good radiation suit and do it? Did Spock have some special knowledge that Scotty didn't?)

A book taking place either one or two years later -- that's not clear either -- makes explicit references to iPods and 9/11 (published in 2006).

Plotholes?

Port Royal sank and was destroyed on June 7, 1692, approximately a hundred years before the roughly-set time in PotC canon.

But I'm not sure it counts, because the problems regarding linear time in the PotC universe are so many and so widespread and so varied that we just ended up incorporating the strangeness about time into the bar!canon and its crossover. It works marvelously well.

But this is why you won't find a PotC player specifying an actual year for when canon happened. There isn't one.

It's cute and all, but in some ways, it kind of isn't her. I can see her falling in love with him and loving him forever, but Sarah's life wouldn't stop cause the Doctor is gone. I know a lot of people have had issues with that.

It's not really a plothole so to speak, but attempting to bash out a timeline for The Dark Is Rising Sequence requires ignoring decimalisation issues -- specifically the fact that the Drews can have farthings as pocket change in the first book (which would date it to some time before 1961 or 1962, when the farthing was taken out of official circulation) and yet The Dark Is Rising, supposedly set about a half-year later, is clearly post-Decimal Day...a gap of about a decade.

Teja's canon is one of the more-holes-than-plot ones. There's an entire new plot line that gets conjured out of a hat for the last third when there was lovely abandoned plot from the first third that would have served wonderfully in that place. But people didn't plot that way, back then. They just wrote a story.-

Jamie's canon claims that lots of worlds speak English. Then it claims that English is actually an ancient/historical/religious language on a specific world. A character from that world ends up in England, and is able to be perfectly well understood.

BUT THEN it turns out that what that character is actually speaking, and what Jamie has been hearing as English all along, is in fact not English but the sooper special ur-language of the worlds which all Homeward Bounders can understand as one of their silver linings.

Except of course that everyone else in England still understands it too . . .

Maybe the English are just that special?

I give you the Battle of Hoth, wherein three separate snubfighters (Wedge-Janson, Hobbie-some dude, Two Dudes What Go Boom) are designated 'Rogue Two' in the space of five minutes, and the Wedge-Janson snubfighter is both Rogue Two and Rogue Three, in the span of ten seconds.

Technically, I think the show canon is 'proper' canon to most Who fans, as would be the actual show of Torchwood (except wtf Gwen/Gwendolyn thingy) and SJA. Even though there have been two SJAs. >.>
CiN specials are of questionable canon, but I adore the last one, so.
Books and audioadventures are Right Out, unless one is looking for cracky-as-hell plot (or wants to app Hex plz? :D) such as the evil undead time-looped frankenstiened stuffed bunny rabbit with the chain-smoker's voice or the Doctor (and a vast horde of companions) having to steal and replace the same diamond twice because they totally fluffed it the first time.

STAR WARS HAHA WHERE DO I START. "Retcon" is every author's favourite word. And let's just not even talk about the prequels. I wonder if I can come up with just a few examples.

1. Boba Fett! The Sarlacc went NOM NOM NOM but Boba Fett is clearly too badass to die. He somehow escapes? I don't remember the details of the short story but I'm sure they're pretty sketchy anyway, since Kevin J Anderson wrote it. But now he's all over the place! Yay Boba Fett. Not.

2. Everything important in the entire galaxy happens to someone with the last name "Solo" or "Skywalker". NOTHING ELSE GOES ON IN THIS WORLD. (Unless it's a book where the author is Aaron Allston or Michael Stackpole, in which case some interesting things happen to people with the last names "Antilles" and "Horn", too.)

3. Leia remembers her mother. Who, uh, died in childbirth (from "heartbreak", I wish I could say I made that up).

4. Obi-Wan is fifty-seven in A New Hope, in a galaxy where "sixty is the new forty". Must be all that desert living. Terrible for the skin.

5. The Death Star, this symbol of power and thing with super awesome technology ... was designed by insects (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Geonosian)? (Which totally disregards previous EU canon, by the way, but LOL EU.) I, I got nothin'.

6. MIDICHLORIANS.

Okay, I'm done. For now.

NOMINATION

Lunar has quite a few plot holes in it, but instead of focusing on things like how Vane and the Grindery were somehow able to switch places in between the two games or how more than one dragon of the same color can exist at the same time if dragons reincarnate, I'm going to nominate the one character that the games hinge on:

Ghaleon.

There's just so much you never know about that guy, especially if you go by video game canon alone. He's the only one of his race in the entire game. His age is unknown but estimated to be anywhere from 40 to 1000. No one seems to know where he's originally from. He might be Mia's father. He's somehow powerful enough to enslave a dragon, one of the holy creatures of his world, by himself. He was able to come back to life 1000 years later in Lunar 2 by deceiving an evil god and his lie was somehow never detected until it was convenient. And he can attract fairies, even when he's a purpleish, 1000-year-dead zombie. How he is able to do any of this is never explained.
