Daily Entertainment.

Am I the only equally excited to see 'Mamma Mia' in theaters as I am to see 'Iron Man'?

Also, a bit of news: on NPR this morning, they were talking about a Senegalese Al-Qaeda operative named Iroh.

According to several of my Senegalese friends, a common monniker of respect is 'Uncle'.

There you go.

I have coupons to go see a free advance screening of Prince Caspian downtown tonight, but I don't think I can make it! :(

Dude, I didn't even know they were making a movie of Mama Mia.

I'm as equally excited. But that's because, despite being a comic book geek, I really don't have much sense that Iron Man is actually about anything. Never mind that I am a DC fan at heart and get annoyed that Marvel has so many projects out there and DC has Batman and nothing else any time soon.

I actually have no opinion, other than that it looks pretty. Caspian was one of the Narnia books I could never bring myself to read, along with The Silver Chair.

The cast is a lot better than I would expect for this kind of project. But can any of them sing?

Green Lantern!! I can't understand how someone who is a test pilot to start with, who can make just about anything with ring, and who can fly in space and fights cosmic threats has never been seriously considered for a film.

It's all based on ABBA music. I saw the musical; cute, but formulaic.

It also amazes me how much trouble it is, apparently, to get a wonder Woman movie made.

Firth, as I recall from The Importance of Being Earnest has a pasaable voice, but then he wasn't asked to do much in that movie so he could be much better.

The funny thing is that I'm not that huge a GL fan. There are a lot of heroes I like more, and I'm not reading the current GL comics. But some heroes are better suited to TV - Green Arrow and the Flash, for example - and some who are epic.

They had Joss Whedon write a screenplay and then rejected it. What kind of moron does that?

IRON MAN. There's Oscar buzz for Robert Downey Jr.'s performance in this film as of two weeks ago, and every single one of my friends the world over that's seen it thus far at sneak previews/advance press screenings/etc. is calling it the best film they've seen in years. This is from people whose idea of an exciting film night is watching old Satyajit Ray films. Don't get me wrong, Ray is brilliant, but when people who hate superhero films call you up screaming excitedly at 3:00 AM to tell you that the Iron Man film ROCKS, you KNOW something's been done right.

I hope they're not wrong. Go, Tony, go!

Plus, Terence Howard as Jim "War Machine" Rhodes. Oh my God, oh my God.

So, in conclusion, Iron Man owns my soul for the next week. Everything else cinematic is going to have to temporarily recede onto the cultural horizon.
