Daily Entertainment.

What song can you listen to, even when you're at your most dejected/upset/pissed off, that makes you feel at least the tiniest bit better?

Mine tends to change a fair amount, but they always seem to fall in the classic-rock phase for me. Lately, it's been Rolling Stones "It's Only Rock and Roll". I'm gonna like what I'm gonna like so forget you, man. :O! And stuff.

Also Rod Stewart. Don't ask.

Pink by Aerosmith.

It's like red but not quite! Also helps if I'm somewhere I can dance.

Also Heavenly Day by Picture House, for the upbeat tune and optimistic lyrics.
There's a chalk smile drawn in the road // It could be mine: I'm taking it home // it's for you, me, and everybody I know // I'm just giving it away

I don't really have one - exactly what music I choose depends on exactly my mood at the time. Road Rage by Catatonia - actually, the entirety of the International Velvet album is usually pretty good.

Lately, though, I've been not-so-good quite a lot, and it's been the Iron Man OST getting the most airing. "Driving With The Top Down" is just perfect.

Shockingly -- shockingly! -- anything by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion or Heavy Trash. Anything. Loud and messy and aggressive and funny FTW!

Usually it's pretty moment-specific, though. I can suddenly insist on wanting the most ridiculous thing, or some song that's really dark, and I'll be grinning in no time. Thank you, iPod technology!

*eyes out the window* It's totally the apocalypse out there. I don't wanna brave it. Given the lightning, I think Indiana may have been wiped off the face of the map. Which... would be inconvenient, I think.

"Better" by Tom Baxter is a little bittersweet, both for personal reasons and the general tone of the song, but it always makes me smile, even just a little. My main feel-better songs are "MX Missiles" by Andrew Bird and "This Year" by the Mountain Goats. I can't understand half of what Bird is singing, but there's an upbeat feel to the song, and there's the line where he mentions being MX missile-proof; when I'm feeling down, I always like the idea of being (metaphorically) missile-proof.

The chorus of "This Year" is a rousing "I AM GONNA MAKE IT THROUGH THIS YEAR, IF IT KILLS ME"; it's a good one to shout with til you start to believe it.

(Honorable mentions: "Say It to Me Now" by Glen Hansard [at least, that's the chorus; I can't actually remember if that's the real title] for mad-as-hell shout-singing, any movie score from a recognizable silly moment in a movie.)

ABBA works a lot of the time for me. Haha. ABBA has this irritatingly awesome way of picking you up when you're down.

And if not, then 'Goodmorning Starshine' by the Cowsills. My favourite song in the universe.

Ooooor anything by S&G.

Wow I am a nerd.

WAKALAKA!

ALSO, when sad:
-God is a DJ by Pink
-Middle of the Ride by Jimmy Eat World (hush)
-Zero to Hero from Hercules OST

And it's heavy metal all the way when I'm angry. The Iron Man OST is great for this because it doesn't even have any words. Just pure anger.

Soon I discovered that this rock thing was true
Jerry lee lewis was the devil
Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet
All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world
So there was only one thing that I could do
Was ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long!

In other words, Ministry's Jesus Built My Hotrod, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaUqx96jSHg) which is still one of the rockingest songs to ever grace human history and undoubtedly will serve as a cornerstone of future civilization.

As will the new Lyrics Born release, in particular I Changed My Mind. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL4fG3TIMdc) (That is also an excellent video.)

Also in heavy rotation this week during bad times: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Dig, Lazarus, Dig! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kV5XkBQsKU) (PORN STACHE, AUGH.)

Nas is an artist that always gets a lot of play when I'm feeling down, as does pretty much everything in the current Boomkat catalog.

It really depends on how bad I'm feeling and what day of the week it is. I have a few hundred songs that I can rotate to lift my spirits, everything from bhangra, Bollywood stuff, new tribal, industrial, arabdustrial, drum and bass, hardstep, old blues, dubstep, math rock, funk, hip hop, guitar heaviousity, etc.

Examples:

Kool Keith, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVCA-WahQIo) baby. Black Elvis!

And always DJ Spooky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mphIMaCbIW4) for some seriously hardcore and funky soundscapes. Played very, very loudly.

Steph! Young Turks! Dare to be daring.

Wind in the Willows is a good morning starter.

Thubthumping when someone went out of their way to make my day worse.

Devil is a Loser always makes me snigger and snicker.

Blood Red Sandman to imagine the horrible demise of mean, idiotic people.

Julie Andrews helps at the time of those horrible tasks that sorely need A Spoonful of Sugar

And this one, I just like the tune: Sonic Boom!

Besides that, I like classics like the 9th of Beethoven. And many, many more...

It should be noted that my taste in music is craptastic at best, but songs that take me from Bad -> Better -> Good are songs that I never fastforward past when they come up on shuffle.

"Dancing Nancies" - Dave Matthews Band
And then I'll
Sing and dance and Ill play for you tonight
The thrill of it all
Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes
But Ill work it out.

"Extraordinary Machine" - Fiona Apple
I seem to you to seek a new disaster every day
You deem me due to clean my view and be at peace and lay
I mean to prove I mean to move in my own way, and say,
I've been getting along for long before you came into the play

"Corduroy" - Pearl Jam
I dont want to hear from those who know...
They can buy, but cant put on my clothes...
I dont want to limp for them to walk...
Never would have known of me before...
I dont want to be held in your debt...
And I'll pay it off in blood, let I be wed...
And Im already cut up and half dead...
Ill end up alone like I began...

I don't have any one song. I have a huge long list! Mostly of artists, rather than individual songs.

Dar Williams, almost (though not quite) anything, but especially "Another Mystery." Vienna Teng. Simon and Garfunkel. Antje Duvekot.

Um. Also Dschinghis Khan's "Moskau." *eyedart* And silly overwrought melodramatic ballads of the 80s and early 90s: "Carry On My Wayward Son," "Kiss From A Rose," etc etc etc. Anything I can sing along with and make MY MANPAIN IS SO DEEP AND DRAMATIC gesticulations with.

...oh, lots of things.
Nearly any BNL, lots of Todd Rundgren, also lots of Andrew Bird.
Latest individual-song day-savers:

Improper Dancing - Electric Six (It's a good song to yell along with. Also, STOP..... continue!)
The Magic Position - Patrick Wolf (You just. Can't help dancing, even if it's just chair-dancing.)
Mandelbrot Set - Jonathan Coulton (See above.)
Late Night Show - the Animators (Fun times.)
Witchi-Tai-To - Brewer & Shipley (HAPPY BOUNCY FUNTIMES. Also, any song that's basically 'makes me feel glad that I'm not dead' - no, really, that's half the lyrics - is a good sentiment.)

The Who = also good, often for 'RAR SMASH' moments. But given the band in question... well. Smashing is to be expected, one supposes.
