Amazing what a pup's grooming and hygenie habits get you thinking about. Namely, what do pups do who are Bound or living in the Bar and can't access a salon or spa easily for their grooming needs? Especially haircuts? Just let it grow all wild? Hack it off themselves?

And hey, business opp/job opps for pups by the looks of it either way.

I know that back when I started reading Milliways, there were a few characters whose hair simply didn't grow while they were Bound. Don't know if anyone's thought about that since, though.

Urban myth. Hair/nails "growing" after death is due to skin shrinkage. Enough hair is below your scalp/nails below your skin that they just become more exposed as the skin contracts. =)

HURRAY! Someone else knows this. If I had a dollar for every time I've had to argue the science, I'd have, well, a few dollars!

No, no, silly! What I meant was it's such an ingrained belief, it's hard to convince people of the truth. Lots and lots of people think the hair and nails grow after death.

This. For all my Bound pups.

Because people in Mel's time would notice if her colour grew out, and I leave people Bound for years in the Real World time of a heartbeat.

As it happens, the primary example of this that I know of was from Mel's universe- Andrew Wells, specifically- so that's kind of appropriate, really.

When I bound Tycho for a while, I'm pretty sure I handwaved that his girlfriend cut his hair for him. Maybe. It's been so long now, I can't remember!

Does the bar have other facilities or is that why there is a forest out back?

[identity profile] nothawkingbird.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
There's the infirmary (with a shrink corner), brothel/nightclub, garage, security office, gym inside.

out back there's the stables, the gardens, the greenhouse, the roof (but hardly anybody goes there), the inlet, the mountains, the forest.

so nope, nothing yet as far as I know.

All that and no bathroom? heheheh

Yes I am being 12 yrs old today.

yes, actually two of them, come to think of it.

There's a magic related one, but I guess you'd have to ask Suti at this point for access since Esk and Hermione both are gone.

I've used giving haircuts in threads a time or two, or mentioned that a character needs one. That's about all the thought I've ever put into it--considering I get my hair hair cut about twice a year it's realistic to me.

I'm certain the determined ones can figure out how to trim their own hair. *eyes Farley and Nash* After all, Bar can provide everything needed for a haircut.

Naturally, it depends on the pup's personality. I think Mia probably just let her hair grow out during the war, so she likely did the same when she was Bound. Even though she regularly visits the salon when she can. >.>

And it just doesn't matter for some pups. Like the bald Homestar Runner. XD

You know, between the last episode and the distant epilogue Yunno goes from a bit shaggy to long and in a ponytail for hair. This isn't the worst reason why...

Hard to explain when he gets out though.

...Momiji insists that I volunteer him for any and all of your barber-type needs.

If, you know, your pups happens to be completely and utterly reckless with their grooming.

The only one of mine who has been Bound was Suzi, and she had other things to worry about then!

Now out in Quinn's time, on the wrong end of England, without a brush...? It was grim.

[identity profile] sir-gareth.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Goldy cuts her own hair, natch. No-one else is allowed to get scissors within a three yard radius of it. She's also cut others' hair in past threads, including Mary Anne and Makita (twice). Nothing commercial though.

I'd like to say that Tere cut Indy's hair when he was Bound back in the day. Since then, he's probably had other girls do it for him, or has gone to a barber back in his world. Alternatively, it's always possible that Mike is a whiz with shears. Dunno. Have never discussed that with Bing.

...Oh, god, that came out ALL WRONG.

[identity profile] sir-gareth.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
If she wanted to, sure. Jen has an open invite to do anything with Goldy.

>.>

Except cut her hair.

[identity profile] gammagammahey.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
None of my pups have ever been or will ever be Bound, but if Jen were? She'd make do somehow, since Bar can hand out shampoo and conditioner on demand. She'd probably find some nubile male bar patrons to give her almond oil massages and whatnot.

Kendra, on the other hand, is very low maintenance and could easily survive without grooming niceties, although she'd probably resort to shaving her legs with a straight razor if there is no waxing salon available at Milliways.

(She'd consider asking Clark to heat vision off her leg hair just to see how red he'd turn, but would never seriously consider letting him, of course.)

Funny that I never thought of that when Kirk was Bound. I guess he just didn't need haircuts.

And my only other Bound pups are dead.

I will note that Knox is very aware of haircuts in the Bar since Rapunzel gets one three times a day. But she doesn't need a barber.

Most of my characters who are, or have been, Bound are used to cutting their own hair - when Marlowe's hand was out of operation, I had his hair grow noticably long.

Although, thinking about it doesn't help my current ponderings about godddess and the like needing to shave/wax. Divine personifications of Grecan-Roman beauty, and all of that.

[identity profile] accipiterpuella.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
You think that's bad? At some points in Egyptian history, Egyptians waxed their entire bodies.
mycursedface: (April Fools - Golden Girl)

[personal profile] mycursedface 2008-08-05 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, trust me, I know.

And I've also pondered that, given the state of Greco-Roman statues when it comes to hair.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that the Greeks and the Romans ever did it to the extreme that the Egyptians did it. The Egyptians, IIRC, also invented a form of chemical depilatory.

Probably not, no, but the gods and such are BETTER than humans. And, again, you have the paintings on the vases, you have the statues, so I'm left wondering the nitty gritty details re: hair on bodies.

also invented a form of chemical depilatory

...I really shouldn't be surprised.

Laini: Shapeshifter. Her hair is as long/short as she wants it.

Svava: Just lets it grow- she tends to keep it back in a braid or ponytail. Though she probably trims off the split ends as needed.

Wellard: Well, when he was dead and bound, I figured his hair wouldn't grow. Now... heh. In his canon, the officers on ship did have long hair- they just pulled it back in a queue. Wellard still wears his hair like this- and probably just cuts off the end when it gets too long.

Xaldin isn't bound, but once a month his hair needs serious maintenance. Xigbar helps him with it, and has since he first had dreadlocks (about age twelve or so).

Lan presumably trims his hair periodically, when either he or Nynaeve feels it's necessary. Not all that often, as this is not so much a careful style as "Well, it's getting kind of excessively past shoulder-length."

I never really worked it out for Alain; I assume he got a trim as needed, but I also assume he was willing to let his hair get fairly shaggy before he got around to that. Pseudo-Old West and all that. Edmund, I figure(d) one of his sisters maybe trimmed it, if there wasn't some sort of handwavy barber around the place. Or maybe Kitty did at one point, back when, um, their relationship was such that she might be doing so. I vaguely pondered the issue but never put too much thought into it.

I have a vague recollection that someone was talking about starting a salon/barbering business at one point. I can't remember if that was IC or OOC talking, though, or if it ever got off the ground at all. So this is a completely useless comment!
