Milliways Meme! Sorta...

Hey, me and copinggoggles thought this would make a good meme- comment on this post listing the characters/fandoms represented here on mways that you had read about/were a part of before mways, and those that you plan to read about as a result of someone's roleplaying them.

Good Omens and Daria, obviously. Also Discworld, Neverwhere, Harry Potter... I have a feeling I'm missing something...
I've been meaning to investigate Dogma for a while now. And I've been trying to get Sandman for AGES, and this is only making the need stronger.

Oh yeah, THAT was it.
Tom Stoppard, in the sense that we did 15-Minute Hamlet at school in spring (I was Gertrude!), and R&G Are Dead had been recommended. May just investigate.
And I've read Hamlet.

Tom Stoppard wrote 15-Minute Hamlet too? Cool.

Yay! Look, muchabstracted, we have corrupted people! And that's even with trying ot keep ourselves from spending more than three nights a week in the bar!

Been there, done that:

Sandman, obviously
Harry Potter
Neverwhere
Good Omens
Discworld
er... Ancient Greece? *boggles at the thought of Ancient Greece as a fandom*
Pride and Prejudice
Buffy
Tom Stoppard
Dogma
Shakespeare *insert boggle repetition here*

To Do List:

Kingdom Hospital
the Fool's books; how did I miss those???

*looks at list and realizes she reads too much*

Ha. No such thing.

Done deals: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Jane Austen (obviously), Shakespeare, Greek mythology (ancient Greece?), Tom Stoppard, Angels in America, Daria, Star Wars, Dogma, Crime & Punishment (although I'm a bit rusty), TMNT, The Lion King (hee!), Pirates of the Caribbean, Wheel of Time (this'll be relevant soon).

Future addictions, I'm sure: Good Omens, Utena, Discworld, Neverwhere, Sandman, Robin Hobb, . Buffy is already in progress, but I don't know it well enough to say that I'm a part of it. Same with Kingdom Hospital.

Oh yeah, do I need a life.

!
Another Daria fan! (In my experience they're nearly impossible to find on LJ.)
GO, Neverwhere, and Discworld are all very much worth investigating. Warning, though: Discworld is, at present, somewhere around 30 books, and Terry Pratchett's still writing.

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the show in such a long time, because its rerun scheduling got funky, and then I went to college, and couldn't afford cable. I used to watch it all the time, though. I am Daria, I think.

30?! o.O Good heavens, and people complain about Wheel of Time with its 10 main books and counting.
kabeleced: (Default)

[personal profile] kabeleced 2004-07-14 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The Terry Pratchett books tend to be shorter than the WoT books, though. And they're not as all over the place. (And I think the fonts are bigger.) (And personally, if you ever start reading them, I'd recommend the Watch books.)

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins* Yeah, WoT does get around, doesn't it?

The Watch books?
kabeleced: (Default)

[personal profile] kabeleced 2004-07-14 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was reading one of them once and the point of view shifted so much I had to flip back to the last time that bit was mentioned and figure out what'd happened.

The Watch. The Ankh-Morpork City Watch, the policemen. Part of the Discworld series. They're my favorites, anyway.

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tell me. I just realized last night, when I was looking for Mat bits for research, that book 8 has no Mat in it at all, from what I can see. I think I'll need to go back to book 7 for the bulk of it.

Ah, okay. I'll have to remember that. :)

Parents and sister have called me Daria on occasion. XD I'd be RPing her, but then I figured I'd have more fun with Jane.
Sadly, the show got cancelled a few years ago. (Like Mom said, she had to graduate sometime.) Noggin's running it now, but they censor bits out for no real reason, so if you want to catch up Outpost Daria may be your best bet.
And yes, 30 books. I can't compare them to Wheel of Time books seeing as I've never read those, but they move veryvery quickly (except, in my opinion, for a few of the Rincewind books). And you don't even have to read 'em in order!
Following Regulus' lead, Soul Music is positively brilliant. And there's an animated version of that one - the book is of course better, but the cartoon's okay and the music is WONDERFUL.
kabeleced: (Default)

[personal profile] kabeleced 2004-07-14 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
... animated version? Eep.

(Didn't we have a Susan around here somewhere?)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (the truth shall make ye...)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2004-07-14 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. That and Wyrd Sisters. They tweak both stories a little bit - Soul Music is lacking the bits with Vetinari, for one. But the music makes up for it in that case, at least a little.
Yeah, there's Susan. Somewhere. Journal migrated over from [livejournal.com profile] discworld_rpg.

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd heard the show got cancelled, and was sorely bummed. It's on Noggin now? Hmm. Now I just need to find an area that runs Noggin on their cable. Neither my hometown nor my current city of residence do. It's a bummer. I need my nostalgia tv fix.

Book series that don't need to be read in order are good. I had a heckuva time trying to find some installments of WoT.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (it's true enough i guess)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2004-07-14 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had Noggin (which I don't, since we don't have digital cable) I'd prolly just watch Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete & Pete. I have lots of taped eps of Daria from the MTV days, 10-minute commercial breaks and all.
Yeah, out-of-order reading is fun. If I'd taken Discworld in order I may not have stuck with it, since the first two books are incredibly dull in my opinion. (I think the suggestion is to read the Watch books in order so that Night Watch makes a bit more sense, but you don't even have to do that.)

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I am so envious of your tapes. Those are the two shows I'm most concerned about right now, although I also have a bizarre desire to watch Salute Your Shorts.

Okay, so Watch books in order, but hold off on the first two books. Got it. :)
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (another postcard)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2004-07-14 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man. Let's just revive Nickelodeon's 1993-ish programming and we'll be good. ::wants Angry Beavers back, dangit!, not to mention a few of the others::
And if you ever need a list of all the Discworld books in order, I've got one. It's got my thoughts on each book, but I won't send that bit - prolly would substitute with which set of characters the book's about, if any (since some of them are random asides).

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me. Along with the other classics, like Don't Just Sit There and You Can't Do That on Television. Or the original Doug. The early episodes.

Ooh, I will almost certainly take you up on that.
minkhollow: view from below a copper birch at Mount Holyoke (i mean really.)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2004-07-14 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Rocko's Modern Life, Eureka's Castle, All That before Lori Beth Denberg left the show, Are You Afraid of the Dark... and, yeah, early!Doug was good. Before they graduated from the one school.
None of this All Spongebob All The Time business - it lost its charm some time back, if you ask me.
Re: the book list - all right then. Just say the word, when you think you're ready for it, and I'll send it along.

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Rocko! I almost forgot him. And Are You Afraid of the Dark... ugh, I loved that show.

I've never been a SpongeBob fan. I'm told I'm a freak.

Will do. :)
minkhollow: (song of the viking)

[personal profile] minkhollow 2004-07-14 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The only ep of Rocko's Modern Life I really remember is the one with the Hansel and Gretel sendup (Hansel and Debbie, I think it was?). And I think I was too young, for the most part, when it came to Are You Afraid of the Dark, but there were a few episodes I'd hope to see due to the coolness of the concepts.
Spongebob was cute the first couple times, but far as I can tell, it's all the same.
Oooh! Also also also! Early Rugrats. (Might just be me, but it doesn't seem as good anymore.)

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't catch Rugrats in the early days of the show. I was more a Doug fan. It took me a few years. But you're right, it's lost some of its punch.

[identity profile] musical-muse.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be completely obsessed with Hey Dude! Does that make me weird?

...Funny, that's about the only one I remember not liking.
Oh well. To each their own.

My main fandoms are Harry Potter and Good Omens at the moment, but I am well versed in Sandman, Neverwhere, and Buffy (and X-Files, but sadly, no Mulder or Scully yet - and no, not going to go there with a second character.) I know some classics (enough to at least keep up with you smarty folks) and I know my Shakespeare (or at least I knew it well enough at one point to remember it mostly). I also know Firefly, Discworld, and Dogma pretty well.

I am fairly ignorant of anime and many of the book characters from scifi/fantasy titles (Except for you, Lestat - I know all about you.)

[identity profile] miscellanny.livejournal.com 2004-07-14 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Mulder? Scully? Pffft.

Krycek.

I am versed in Shakespeare, Buffy, the Greek/Classical stuff, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Tom Stoppard, Angels in America, Austen, Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Turtle stuff and Star Wars.

I must read/get involved with Good Omens, Sandman, Discworld, and The Fool's books...

If I had time I would pick up another character, Janet Carter from Pamela Dean's Tam Lin but then I would have less than no life. I would have negative life. That would be bad...

Stuff I Knew: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Lion King, Shakespeare/Stoppard, Turtles, Star Wars, Dogma

Stuff I am currently reading and loving to leetle bits: Good Omens

Stuff I have no clue about, but am highly intrigued by: Neverwhere, Sandman, Discworld (and more, possibly, but my brain implodes at the thought of reading that much stuff on top of schoolwork)
