Eddie was always fun with Mal in particular, because outside of the Srs Bsns Gunslingerosity, Eddie was...he had his own demons. Mal could relate to that, even if his own didn't match. The humor Eddie had was always pretty high up there for me personally, and for Mal it made everything DT easier to handle. Mal appreciated him for that a fair amount.

It is interesting that a sense of humor helped Mal to cope with DTery, also. Eddie tried to moderate his sense of humor based on whether or not it would be helpful, to the point that Simon still thinks Eddie was a real serious guy. It says something interesting about Mal that Eddie being able to make jokes put a human face on things, rather than creating the impression they were frivolous, which I think it would have done with Simon. Maybe because Mal's speech is often humorous, too--in a different, wryer, way, but definitely not taking himself entirely seriously 100% of the time.

*nods* I don't think Simon hit enough of a rock bottom to really have the same perspective on it that Mal and Eddie might have shared.

Hmm, that's a really good take on it. When you've been down there, sincerity and big ideas are hard to trust. There's an actual distrust for people who take themselves too seriously, because you know where that kind of lofty big-picture thinking gets you.

Not to say Simon didn't struggle with anything, but not on the same plane.

This kind of reminds me of Nathan Fillion's D*C commentary about Mal's apparent atheism. "Let's get this straight," he says, "Mal believes in God. He believes in God very strongly. He just doesn't like him very much."
