Daily Entertainment.

Milliways Bar as its own fandom: yes, no, why or why not?

ETA: A note -- If you are a Milliways lurker in general or just a DE lurker when you get a chance, feel free to participate in DEs. Daily Entertainment posts started when I discovered that I usually have enough privacy at work to post in and then reply via email to things, but not enough quiet/room to concentrate to post in and thread. If you are a newbie or lurker in general, DEs are also a great place to come in and introduce yourself. :)

Yes, it definitely is, because I've come to love some of the characters here that I didn't actually feel fond of in their own canons, or that I simply didn't know that much about one way or another. You start to fangirl/boy pups when you read other people's threads, and it becomes its own little thing.

:D

Yes, it is, because crossovers aren't random in this context, and there are pairings which would need some pretty whacky crossover fics (**eyes own charries**) without Milliways. But here, Bernard/Tonks or Asar-Suti/Gil Whimple are totally canon...

Yes, this.

Any pan-fandom RP becomes its own fandom for that very reason, IMO.

Yes, because it has been able to come up with original situations, even if it happened with existing characters. People have been doing that for ages. (The big examples that come to my mind are the works of William Shakespeare and the book Scarlett.)

And, if it was really considered its own fandom, I would be able to bring in the character journals for the Malfoy-Ausa children who otherwise have to be content living in Mixed Muses. They are part of Milliways canon.

I'm not sure of that. The rules of the Milliways canon are such that OCs, even OCs who are the natural results of in-game marriages, can't cross into the bar. That doesn't mean the kids can't exist as part of the game. [livejournal.com profile] gao's Rose Toren, for example, doesn't enter the bar (in the m_b main continuity), but she interacts with bar regulars in OOMs and her actions affect Susannah Toren's in-bar doings. Rose and the Malfoy-Ausa kids (not to mention any number of other OCs who appear in OOMs) still belong to Milliways and the Milliways fandom even if they can't sit at the bar and order the paradox special.

The fact that there have been people who follow Milliways just to follow it and not play indicates it has a fandom.

I was one of those people for my last few months of high school, since I didn't have the time (or enough internet access) to actually play, but I could read random threads and follow characters. But then I jumped in during the summer.

Yes! I don't play much these days, but I still lurk and read and want to know what happens to the characters I follow. I've only read one Robert Jordan novella (and it frankly bored me), but I love Moiraine and nearly cried when Raven brought her back. I don't know the Anouilh Antigone, but I had the Antigone-Coyote reunion stalker-tagged and Coyote's OOM just now hit me in the gut. I am a Milliways fan and proud of it.

At one point or another the game has had everything that other fandoms have had -- fic, vids, fanmixes, wank, meta, etc. I don't see why not.

Ugh. D: How is it so early, Stephface? And I'll have been at work for at least an hour by this point tomorrow. D: D: D: D:

YES DEFINITELY.
There's the crossover element, as mentioned. And the original situations, and the attaching to characters whose canon one doesn't know/care for. It has its own icons, its own fic, its own academic papers, its own inside jokes, its own hipsters commenting on the difference between canon!Bernard and Millicanon!Bernard (anyone remember where that story got relayed?)...
And then there's the followers. [livejournal.com profile] quinby keeps bumping into people who read the game, or have read it in the past, and squee like mad when they hear who she or I play/ed. (One of these was so far back they remembered Jane Lane. XD)

There have certainly been Milli-pairings that I would write fic of. *cough*

As an aside, I lurked here for nearly a year, and knew about the place for two before that. So I was a Millifangirl? I guess?

I'd say it is for a lot of the reasons listed above. Half the fic I've written is actually millific.

Also because I'll be flipping the channels on the TV and see a certain actor and think "That's (name of pup)!" even when that actor has never played the pup but is used as the PB.

...Also because if I read/watch a canon for the first time with a pup that Jack's interacted with, I get his reaction to it in my head too. A Wizard's Dilemma was so much AUGH.

I second this completely. My Netflix queue and reading list has been very defined by Milliways along with how I think about certain actors.

Also my amazon wishlist and all sort of other things especially when I see something I really connect with, a voice in my head goes, hmm who could I play?

Though I didn't really lurk, Danii showed me a thread or two explained stuff then had Cam talk to me more and suddenly I was in and feeling lost until people welcomed me. Now I try and do the same for newbies since that generous reaction was one of the best things for me about Milliways.

It completely is. Pairings that make no sense to anyone outside the game (o hai Puck/Havelock) can seem completely normal, and world crossovers - plus, it's possible to get addicted to characters/worlds here before you actually find their canon.
