Hijacked DE

Steph is off work today for her tattoo, so I'm hijacking the DE.

What's the craziest reason you've ever taken a day off work? What would get your pup to take a day off?

For me, I think it was scheduling a day off so I could be home to participate in an RP plot. As for my pups, Zoe doesn't work yet millicanonically and Esme works from home, so it's a moot point.

Kirk's a workaholic. Knox works flexible hours these days, but skipped work to attend the Mets' ticker tape parade in 1986 (which was a sad excuse for a parade, since Gotham has no money, but it was still a parade) and would do that again. Gibbs never officially misses work, but is being a pirate ever truly work?

And Charlie once passed up a chance to get rehired by his former TV station to go to Eastern Europe and find the answer to something interesting but far from earth-shaking. Really. This is canon. (He did get the job back, though.)

Me? While I admit that I took advantage of vacation time to make sure that I retired Barry Allen on an off-day, and set the day aside for that alone, I have never really taken time off for anything odd. Unless you count how many times I have taken time off to go to cons. I think that's totally normal. (Adds that I have only played hooky a handful of times, and only to go on job interviews disguised as doctor's appointments. And I haven't done that in years.)

Lorne would do pretty much anything for his friends (which is why he has none, or tells himself he doesn't). Seriously, when people say they'd...I don't know, insert crazy thing here that they'd do for their friends and loved ones, Lorne would actually do it. He doesn't just talk the talk, he'll walk it too.

Which is why, oh so secretly, he's terrified of making new friends. He knows just how far he'll go, and he can't go there again. ...this, of course, goes way beyond playing hookie from work. Just saying.

Garak would have to be dead or dying from withdrawal, or staging an assassination attempt on himself. Maybe then he'd take a day off, and only after arguing with the doctor why he shouldn't so much as need a physical exam.

Gabriel...well, he's the biggest workaholic of the bunch, even though it isn't so much work for him as it is who he is.

Only taken off for sickness or special family events, or some lil vacation time. Sometimes for dr appt, but nothing very weird.

Most of my pups don't really work so dunno what they would take off for. Nathan barely seems to work according to canon, and he drops things all the time for family issues.

Oh Bing, when you stop in?

Take it you'll be busy (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/entertainment/Turtles-Turn-25-With-the-Citys-Help.html) this week? :D

I took a day off of work during my camp counseling job to go with some classmates to Alabama to watch some plays. My boss knew I was going beforehand and most of the trip landed on holiday anyway, so she was fine with it.

I took off of work because I was coming down with a case of Obama*.

* Obama was speaking at College Park that day, so I decided to go. I said I was sick. Of course, I was thinking, oh I feel only a little unwell, this is totally a hoax.

And then the next day I had to leave early from my new assignment because I had come down with the flu!

Umph. *thinking* I believe I called in menstrual once. Although I phrased it as 'I'm really not feeling well and I just threw up', since I was talking to one of my male superiors. So unless you want to count cons, but I booked them against vacation days, not days off in general....

As for my pups... hnh. Ray has a relatively easy time justifying days off if he can get in touch with Romana. He actually had a week of vacation in between days two and three of a trial once. Medic would request leave time if it got him a crack at a really impressive new symphony in the area, but that's a rare thing given the parts of the world they tend to work in. And Shephard would take a day off if he wasn't on active war and killin' duty to go bowhunting for bullsquids; he wants to take one of those mofos down with stick and string (although he'd be taking a heavy handgun with him just in case, since they charge right quick if you don't drop them with the first shot).

I have taken a day off (and worked a morning to make sure I had the evening) in order to go to concerts. I've taken a day off in order to help out with a Geek Dance (we call it Get Your Geek On; the tabletop-RPG club at my college started it my junior year). I took a day off at the last minute once because I was too menstrual/beaten in by the crappy weather to walk, never mind bustle about a kitchen tending to dishes for three hours.
[livejournal.com profile] quinby wins, though. She called in 'sick' to hear Terry Pratchett and get me a book signed.

Sariel really isn't the type to skip a shift unless she's feeling icky, and then she'd very likely report to sickbay anyway, so the whole thing's moot. Switch a shift yes, once in a while, but more often than not she's the one getting asked to swap over by someone with plans.

Me, on the other hand... well. I haven't got nearly the work ethic Sariel does, I'm ashamed to say. I haven't skipped work for anything too spectacular; when I have, it's mostly been for family-type things that my superior(s) knew about in advance. Skipping class is another story. I once blew off a class in order to be a jungle gym for six kittens. XD Why yes, I'd do that again.

Teja would not shirk his duty for anything; he has ethics that make anybody roll their eyes. That said, he is self-employed and simply does what is needed so he delivers his work to his customers on time.

As for me in RL, I work half-time and largely make my own schedule. That means I can plan around family events, medieval markets, RPage, concerts, movies or just my natural laziness pretty much as I want to. I get my stuff done and keep an Excel sheet of my hours, and the rest is my own business.

I didn't actually do it, but I was seriously tempted to tell my managers at Toys R' Us that I needed a day off for a wedding.

Of course the wedding was in Milliways. Hence why I didn't actually do it. :D

I took the day off after a concert, once. I do not think I have taken days off for RP yet, though I think I did skip on home an hour or two early once or twice. To account for timezones. *g*

Pup-wise --

X would take off work last-minute if one of her friends was kidnapped/in danger/fighting a war on their world and needed help. No questions.

Raven is both always not-working and always up to something. It's confusing.

Nynaeve -- maaaaaybe to spend time with Lan, but probably more likely just because she'd been flattened by an illness. Or childbed, when she, you know. Gets pregnant. (Far in the future, if ever).

Dean heads into Milliways all the time. But then he keeps weird hours and time stops when he's there, so it's not like he can't afford to, most of the time.

Michael sucks at being irreponsible or self-indulgent. Maybe she'll learn all about that in Milliways. We'll see.

Hmm... I don't think I ever took off work for a ridiculous reason. Going to college football games isn't ridiculous at all. However, if one of my bands came into town, I would do anything to see them. I missed my favorite band, Justice, because my friend had an extra ticket but it was too short notice, and my other favorite, Matthew Good, only came to a 21+ club here in DC. But if they came by this year, I would totally skip work.

In other news, avant-garde electronic music from the 60s is REALLY COOL and I want to minor in music now >>

I think it's cheaper on iTunes? I think.

That's where I snagged it, anyway.

The only time I've taken off work in an actual job was when I took a vacation day because everyone else was using their vacation day that day. Exciting, I know.

But I did miss my first day of classes this semester in an attempt to see the Inauguration. Ah well.

Elle doesn't take days off. The end.

Caprica... also just doesn't have this issue.

Carla can't just not show up to work, and is really, really disinclined to take a day off due to feeling rather obligated toward her patients. That, and most of her friends work at the hospital, anyway. At this point, I can't think of anything that would actually compel her to take a day off, though she'd definitely be using all the time she had off to deal with wedding preparations.

As for me, I am boring! Nothing too weird. I've been kind of zombieish at work because of RP stuff a few times, but never actually called in sick. I have had a lot of "I need to take this vacation day because I'm traveling to [city] where there's a big con to meet up with friends I met on the internet playing pretendy funtime games I almost never see. :D?" I expect I'm in good company there.

Most of my characters don't actually have normal day jobs, which complicates things slightly. But still, hmm.

Back during the war when he was working at the circus, Trowa would disappear without explanation to go blow up military bases in his giant robot suit. I think this probably counts as the craziest! Nowadays, he at least gives warning if he needs to go off somewhere, and he no longer blows things up.

Piotr once worked as a building superintendent? Um, he had amnesia at the time. And then he got yoinked off to have his memory restored and be a superhero again because there was a giant crisis as usual. I'm not sure this exactly counts.

Lan does not take days off being an obsessively driven Warder and secret prince, and has no other schedule to keep to. In the future... well, we'll see! Honey is a high school student, but he would totally take off school to go along with Tamaki's latest harebrained scheme, should that be part of the scheme. Mostly they do stay in school, though. River, again, has no work or school schedule these days, although I'm sure that as a kid she did the occasional "I'm skipping class today because I've just come down with a case of dance recital. :D?" thing. I could definitely see her skipping class for more frivolous reasons too, but it would have to be something seriously worth it and unable to be rescheduled, because River loved school. Regan, I suspect, takes a day off once in a while not so much for anything crazy, but just to have a day off please.

During his canon, Felix is explicitly on a quest to save the world from digesting itself (metaphorically, but it's a metaphor that works). So, sidequests notwithstanding, he'd take a day off if his world underwent Critical Existence Failure. Then he'd wander the afterlife looking for his creator to get him to put it all back. So he tells me, anyway.

Postcanonically, I've decided he'll be wandering the world, helping out those who need help dealing with the return of Alchemy, so unless he gets called somewhere most of his days are days off.

[personal profile] alchemistseraph 2009-04-21 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't work personally, and only one of my pups really does, but it's on no sort of fixed schedule--being a high-scale hooker has its perks, apparently--so I have easy answers for the DE.

But OMFG I am SO GLAD to be out of my bio lab already. Finals are a bitch and a half this semester. >< Also, I bought myself 3:10 to Yuma as a present for not killing anyone in that lab. An hour and fifty minutes on a stretch with utterly stupid people and no lunch has got to be some sort of sadistic test in itself.

I used to take mental-health days now and then, back when I was just working part time. I may or may not have used those days for simple relaxation--hey, hobbies are relaxing. Also, extra days off before cons to finish costumes.

And it seems I've got a gang of very lazy or easily distracted pups; most of them would jump at the chance for a day off.

Al wouldn't take one unless he were damn sure Sam would be fine and the project would be okay without him; with that settled, a good party or a weekend away with a pretty woman would lure him away every time.

There is nothing, but nothing, would keep Rebecca away from healing people who needed it, short of her family needing her more.

I've taken a few vacation days, here and there, but those were days that got used for travel, mostly.

And the odd anime/sf convention.

Because I'm boring.

Now, my pups!

Yuuno's technically a librarian/archeologist, neither of which pays well. The Bar has been kind to him on that front and he could probably retire at this point. He won't because he's a nutty little worry-wort of a workaholic though. Sick days happen to people who don't know their own bodies well enough to take them apart and put them back together.

Tyler used to be a reporter. He's doing much better selling horror stories and enjoys the more flexible hours. Except signing tours, which he curses his agent for booking every time. No really sick days here. Deadlines are deadlines, and the tours are booked well in advance.

Jerry is nocturnal for most purposes and will work at something or read until he just sort of collapses. This is really the only thing that keeps him from working all the time. If you count the reading I mean, which is really an issue for how he gets distracted.

Ako doesn't have a job, but seems to be going to work for the EvilCratic party in another dimension to make spending cash. She might take sick days to hit a festival while she's in Washington. (It's evil-ish?) I have no idea exactly how that happened, but eh, whatever.

That would be to see Bronson Arroyo in concert. Yes, Bronson Arroyo the baseball player. Yes, he can sing. Yes, it was awesome.

Cal spent, by far, more time off work than on it, but I suspect that once he's working again, that will change. He'll actually need the income for the first time ever, for one thing, and he also developed a work ethic toward the end of canon. At least for when he's doing something important.

Javert would take a day off work if he died. That is the only way.

Steven - perhaps surprisingly, given that he spends most of his free time drinking, playing cards, and sleeping around - would also have to be dead, or close to it, to take a day off. He is very serious about his career and about cooking, and neither a hangover, nor having been awake for a week straight, nor a severe injury is a good enough excuse to miss work. Any chef who can't work through any of those, or all three of them at once, is a pansy who'll never make it in the business.

Here I come, bouncing in late as usual to the DE party. :D

The weirdest reason I've ever had for skipping work was...well, working on school assignments. You know, the "LAB REPORT IS DUE IN FOUR HOURS WHAT AM I GONNA--oh right, I'll just call in sick" thing.

The one time Arnold has a job, he doesn't miss it for...well, anything. He does quit when his boss is a jerk, though.

When Rorschach did have a job, I imagine he might have missed a day or two because of crime-fighting related injuries. This probably happened few enough times that he just passed them off to his boss as 24-hour stomach bugs or something.

Tom is a very bad influence on Door. Very bad. He will skive off work for no reason at all. It's a good thing! Most of the time.

Bela is pretty driven, but her hours are so flexible, and she makes them. So it's a non-issue.

Ingress will not get days off unless they are planned or she is injured. :( :(

I, on the other hand, used to happily take sick days for interviews. Nowadays I like my job, but I will schedule time off in advance for fun things.
