Bit of trivia...if you are using AIM via a web browser and not an installed client, you can not invite yourself to groups. = )
Found that out a while ago. If you don't wish to install the AIM client and like using FireFox, there is an Add-On called Meebo which will act as a client for all the major IM services (AIM, Google and Yahoo) and it will allow you to invite yourself to groups.
An additional bit of trivia: Meebo (mentioned above) isn't really an add-on. You don't have to install it. It works like the Lite version of AIM, running straight from your browser. It's actually very handy when I am away from my own computer and still want to chat with folks. Give it a look (http://www.meebo.com), it's pretty darn simple and you grow strangely fond of it after a time or two.
(also, you can invite yourself into any chat room with ease whenever you feel like it.)
