Mrph.

I got nothin'.

From [livejournal.com profile] kd7sov: Have we had an "explain your pups' usernames" DE lately? Because that could be interesting.

Sure! Why not.

[livejournal.com profile] bad_in_latin: Because of a canon quote, also, linguistics nerddom.
[livejournal.com profile] realmrsreynolds: Because Saffron is lame. :O!
[livejournal.com profile] eisenheimhaus: 'The House of Eisenheim' in German; it's what he names his theater he starts in Vienna. It's got a very 'Fall of the House of Usher' vibe to it.
[livejournal.com profile] ofthefamily: It should actually be 'of this family', as per the movie canon quote 'Bella is a part of this family now', but it works in that Carlisle's entire motivations in life is to preserve the unit.
[livejournal.com profile] smart_house: Because SARAH...is a...smart house? I AM UNINVENTIVE.

*has, actually, a 7 in his name, rather than a 5*

Felix is [livejournal.com profile] venusadept_2 because he's the second confirmed Venus Adept to whom the player is introduced. There are other characters - Isaac's parents, in particular - who show up before him and are probably earth-users, but it's not for-certain stated.

Frederic is [livejournal.com profile] littleboyof5 because I have a fondness for "I am" quotes, especially those as silly as his. You see, Frederic was born on Leap Day, and so instead of having just turned 21 he's actually five and a quarter.
newredshoes: possum, "How embarrassing!" (zim zam goddamn authenticity)

Ooh, I love this meme!

[livejournal.com profile] southphillysob - You know, Bill was almost [livejournal.com profile] skidonies, which seems to be a word that only exists in Bill's vocabulary and which doesn't mean anything polite. He's from South Philly (and you WILL NOT FORGET IT) and he's a sonofabitch. He's pretty unapologetic about both.
[livejournal.com profile] always_okay - This should be "always all right" somehow, but I misremembered the canon quote -- which is okay, I guess, because I think the variations on that were already taken.
[livejournal.com profile] regtuesdaysuit - Toward the end of Season 1 of TWW, the staffers are making fun of Josh because he's wearing a nice suit to impress a lady. Josh keeps insisting that he isn't dressing up, this is is regular Tuesday suit. At which Donna asks him if he has suits for each day of the week.
[livejournal.com profile] ambitionsbared - "Be Prepared," baby!
[livejournal.com profile] 2brickstogether - Mr. Gumby believes in peace, love and banging two bricks together. Ah, Python. <3
[livejournal.com profile] hands_unclean - A spot! Out, out, damn spot!

Hmm.

Well Jerry's ([livejournal.com profile] mything_person) is both true and a terrible pun, being as how he get's abducted aliens into myths. That set the theme for my pup names - they're what they say on the tin.

Yuuno ([livejournal.com profile] magic_ferret is a mage that can turn into a ferret.

Ako ([livejournal.com profile] seat_five_girl) sits in seat 5 in her classroom's seating order.

And Tyler ([livejournal.com profile] aleister_author) is a horror writer who is also a Crowley - what his canon calls a baseline human aware of the supernatural and not out try and kill it.

My characters' names are as follows:

If nobody has still apped Marcus Wright from Terminator: Salvation, I am apping him next month. His username is [livejournal.com profile] per1ag0ge. Periagoge, or γνῶθι σεαυτόν gnōthi seauton, is the greek term for Know Thyself. Due to his struggle in the movie against various perceptions and definitions, I felt that this fit him best.

I also contrasted it against a John Connor in another game, whom my sister plays, so that is why he has that username. I chose the username for that character to be [livejournal.com profile] ouden_eidos. This is "I know that I know nothing", although some argue that it ought to be translated as "I know, through not knowing". (ἓν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα hen oída hoti oudén oída, or scio me nihil scire or scio me nescire.)

Both of these can break down due to the Münchhausen-Trilemma, which states that it is impossibly to prove any theory that you have, ever. I feel that this fits Terminator to a T. xD

[livejournal.com profile] in_zero was picked before I adopted him. It comes from his name. That was easy.

[livejournal.com profile] mines_wooden comes from... him having a wooden sword that turns into a sharp blade, also using a baseball bat in some fights. Also... well. Perverted joke, I suppose?

[livejournal.com profile] booksmash after she is apped, well. Maka hits people with books. Clever. In my defense, it was the first rp account I ever made.

[livejournal.com profile] astral_brat - Ben is a brat who says "astral" a lot? Haha, I made this when he was eight. If I was making it now, I might go with ~beingajedi, which I used over on IJ a while ago (and is from a canon quote: "You wanted me to be a Jedi. I'm being a Jedi.").

[livejournal.com profile] navyafterone - James is a CHERUB agent and they're ranked by the colour of their shirts. You get a navy shirt after particularly outstanding performance on a mission, and James got his after just one. (He's a confirmed Gary Stu, what can I say.)

[livejournal.com profile] oftyshalle - In Overworld, Caine is known as the "Blade of Tyshalle". It's because a dude from Marketing thought it sounded cool, but Deliann's theory is here (http://oftyshalle.livejournal.com/957.html).

[livejournal.com profile] ever_lovin is a shortening of one of Ben's more famous lines; that being "I am the ever lovin' blue eyed Thing".

[livejournal.com profile] val_von_doom is Val's name using Val's preferred shortening of her first name. Not so imaginative but it does roll right off the tongue and sounds cute right?

[livejournal.com profile] lil_bunny_ronin is taken from the song title "Little Bunny Foo Foo" and changing it to fit Usagi's situation. My evil attempt at humor but it makes me chuckle when I see it.

[livejournal.com profile] wildwld_gadgets is shorthand for Wild Wild Gadgets, an amalgamation of Artemis' canon title (i.e. Wild Wild West) and what he is most famous for from said canon. He almost was wildwld_marshal, but that would have only worked if I had used the movie canon since in the tv series they weren't marshals in the TV series but special agents. I think.

[livejournal.com profile] excidiumequitis is my attempt at Latin by which I was intending to say "Excidium's Rider". I used Latin because in Capt. Roland's country dragons are traditionally given Latin names.

[livejournal.com profile] nanny_bot is because that is H.E.R.B.I.E.'s primary function and it sounds funny.

[livejournal.com profile] seid_shifter is a play on shapeshifter. Seid is a type of magic the Norse practiced and shapeshifting and magic are among Loki's strongest talents.

[livejournal.com profile] hisimprlmajesty is my shorthand for His Imperial Majesty which is the proper formal address for Emperor Norton. (I miss this guy, head voice come back soon?)

Whew, I think that's everyone.

My pups' user names are all... uninteresting. The only ones with some meaning are "7twistedwishes" for the Devil... lets see, "glenview7537" for Marlowe.

The former is a reference to The Deal and the latter is his phone number (GL-7537)

Oh, "evilontheloose" for Jordan... because she is evil and a fugitive. Sorta.

[livejournal.com profile] works_in_space references the line in Star Trek IV where Kirk insists that he's from Iowa and only works in outer space.

[livejournal.com profile] pirate_gibbs follows in the footsteps of [livejournal.com profile] pirate_jack and is otherwise rather self-explanatory.

[livejournal.com profile] gotham_knocking is a play on the name Knox and his city of origin.

[livejournal.com profile] 52_dropoff refers to the fact that the first Question died in the epic comic book series 52.

[livejournal.com profile] ellectrical - Elle's name with the word 'electrical.' It was the first thing I tried - I remember very specifically wanting an adjective form like that.

[livejournal.com profile] six_ofone - I had really wanted some form of "number_six," especially as I've used the journal in other comms to play other Six copies, but just about everything was taken. This was probably just my favorite pun the show used as an episode title (e.g., "Six Degrees of Separation," etc).

[livejournal.com profile] nurse_espinosa - It's not very inventive, but I wouldn't use anything different. I'd considered something like 'bossofeverybody,' but... eh. This is kind of too perfectly apt to go with anything else.

[livejournal.com profile] youask_why - One of my favorite scenes in the series is Adama asking Sharon why the Cylons hate the humans so much. I guess I could make up some long reasoning about both Athena and Boomer and how their stories in the series tend to focus on their very different choices and the uncertainty of the motivations behind them, but... it's really a lot just because of that scene.

[livejournal.com profile] ghostwitch refers to Malu's title in the A:TLA card game, which is "The Ghost Witch".

[livejournal.com profile] blowupthefloats is from a line from SVU where Munch tells his then-partner that he doesn't just want to rain on his parade, he wants to blow up all the floats.

[livejournal.com profile] heromolly is just a compound of "Hero" and Molly Walker's first name. Obviously not me at my most imaginative.

[livejournal.com profile] ami_imperfect references a scene from Dani's intro episode where she overhears Vlad talking about his imperfect clones and asks him if she herself is imperfect.

[livejournal.com profile] the_wrenster comes from a posthumous nickname Rennes was given in Cube.

[livejournal.com profile] twoyearsmore references the fact that Miss Lily Luna must wait two more years to go to Hogwarts.

[livejournal.com profile] inthetoilet comes from Speed's question about why evidence always has to be in the toilet.

Always a classic.

[livejournal.com profile] joewithnoname He's popularly known as the Man With No Name, but I knew that wasn't going to fly if I wanted to play him any length of time; Joe, Blondie and Manco are all nicknames people give him through his trilogy.

[livejournal.com profile] forced_pilgrim I wanted to try the adjective_noun style that's so popular! It does describe Monkey well.

[livejournal.com profile] no_prisoner I did not pick this name, but I like it; it combines a traditional gunslinger battlecry with the label 'the prisoner' that Walter hung on Eddie. I liked it SO much, that I used it as the template for the other versions of Eddie--[livejournal.com profile] no_exile, because Eddie Dean is later labeled 'the exile,' as an American in Mid-world, but Eddie Toren never left home; and , from the description of a fool as someone with hope but no choices.

[livejournal.com profile] shadowsusannah Another one I didn't name, and another call back to the doors on the beach in DT2--Susannah was the Lady of Shadows.

[livejournal.com profile] ofthatantet comes from a quote in DT 5; We are of that an-tet, sure; khef and ka, watch and warrant. I picked it off the cuff, to indicate that yes, indeed, Susannah's daughter had inherited, and was heart and soul a gunslinger.

[livejournal.com profile] notallwho Another quote, this time from Tolkien, even though she's another DT OC. Not all who wander are lost. A good one for a character who hasn't settled down yet but knows who she is.

[livejournal.com profile] middle_name_s Sheriff Harry S Truman, at your service. I think it's funny that his middle name is a single letter.

[livejournal.com profile] docgf is just pure-d laziness.

[livejournal.com profile] night_hibiscus Two possible translations of Yuna's name.

[livejournal.com profile] gimmeachant Another canon quote! D'Hoffryn giving Willow his business card.

[livejournal.com profile] book_moshi Moshi is Chinese for Shepherd, and in Chinese style, the title follows the name.

[livejournal.com profile] highking I did not pick this one, and it's pretty straightforward; Peter Pevensie, High King of Narnia.

[livejournal.com profile] saionjisenpai This is an alternate spelling of sempai, which is what people tend to call Saionji because of his senior status and his kendo.

I am pretty proud of the NPC journal for the White Plainsverse, which is [livejournal.com profile] wplainsdrifters, punning on the title High Plains Drifter.

My uncle's middle name is also a single letter! I think he was named after a Xavier.

[identity profile] mapmakerchur.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)

Chur is [livejournal.com profile] mapmakerchur because I'm pretty sure she's referred to as a Mapmaker (or maybe 'the' Mapmaker, it's been a while) in Chanur's Legacy due to her ability to sense gravity wells while in hyperspace (and thus make a map showing those locations).
Ben is [livejournal.com profile] beenthenumbers because while he's an independent miner he's known as a good "numbers man" (good at interpreting active scans of an area), and later it is realized that he has gotten the wrong assignment because he's doing something other than scan-tech, and "Ben's always been the numbers." (Also, in my dialect the name "Ben" and the verb "been" sound the same, so not only does it say that he has always "been the numbers," but also that he is "Ben, the numbers.")

(Bonus! While I still played Famine from Nethack his username was "hungryampersand" because in the terminal version of Nethack he is represented by a & and his attack causes hunger.)

[livejournal.com profile] gone_byebye - Direct from the movie. "Ray has gone byebye, Egon, what've you got?"
[livejournal.com profile] alorn_bear - Belar was the Bear God of the Alorn people during the events of the Belgariad and Malloreon books.
[livejournal.com profile] dontlooklisten - Canon quote from Sneakers, during the scene where they're trying to analyze video of a guy's office to locate a codebreaker device. "Guys. Guys. Don't look. Listen. If he's got a service, why does he need an answering machine?"
[livejournal.com profile] aaaaaaaagh_sky - Ellen spent nineteen years growing up in a sealed underground Vault where the ceiling was never more than about thirty feet away. Even now she still has agoraphobia issues if she looks up for very long.
[livejournal.com profile] acts_of_gord - Gordon's user name is a rip-off of the web site Acts of Gord, which is the reminiscences of a guy named Gord who ran a video game store in British Columbia, and who has been acknowledged as awesome by people who wish they did not have to put up with customer cluelessness/deviousness.
[livejournal.com profile] remindmeof_me - At the end of Half-Life: Opposing Force, the G-Man tells Adrian Shephard that he likes people who survive and adapt because they remind him of himself. Alas, that was too many characters, so I cut back to a length LJ would accept.
[livejournal.com profile] hands_of_blu - When a man wears elbow-length blue rubber gloves on the battlefield and is as creepy as some of the Medic's canonical lines would indicate, of course one is going to want to invoke the image of the Hands of Blue, in Firefly.
[livejournal.com profile] prob_japanese - Bumblebee had this name when I adopted him, but I'm pretty sure the person who created the journal was referencing one of Sam Witwicky's lines in the first Transformers movie about the robot probably being Japanese.
[livejournal.com profile] not_toothfairy - The first human in the 2007 TF movie to encounter Ironhide was a small child who asked the giant robot crawling out of her family's pool if he was the Tooth Fairy.
[livejournal.com profile] no_older_brothr - Mulan hasn't had an EP yet, but one line of her original canon has her lamenting that the Emperor is calling for men for the draft because her father is sick and she has no older brother to take his place.

[livejournal.com profile] queenofmay and [livejournal.com profile] livingintrinity are references to the Marian mythology that has developed over time and space and Europe. The Queen of May and the Lord of the Green were adapted early on with them as one of the faceted faces.

[livejournal.com profile] themidnightson is kind of obvious. One, it's the title of his book, The Midnight Sun, which references his trying to explain how Bella effected his entire existence the way nothing had in eight decades. Two it's changing 'sun' to 'sun,' with reference on the because he's literally the starting point of his family happening according to his canon.

[livejournal.com profile] bright_daughter is a reference to humility, innocent age, and brilliance. Things which Star has in spades, even if some of them are only in the seeming of them.

[livejournal.com profile] grandsuccess is a quote from canon. That Allie is the Grand (and pivotal) Success of the TM Great Alien Human experiment. Said by the bad guys in a rather amazing conversation in the later sections of her canon.

[livejournal.com profile] thecommoner is also easy to see why if you've seen canon. It's her sore thumb. It's what is associated with her at every turn, whether as insult or endearing quality. She is common among the privileged.

[livejournal.com profile] sorceressupreme was too long and had to be squished, and it's a truth branded on her soul, she can't avoid even if she has long blonde hair, baby blue eyes, and skin with fragile looking clavicles. It's the blood in everything. She is the Sorceress Supreme of Limbo, raised on it and beholden to it, even in her infuriating inability to hate it for that. Plus, it's a reference to fact she was one of the candidates to replace Doctor strange, and his commentary on her (and her power level) in the books.

Well, Gatsby's username ([livejournal.com profile] thegreat_gatsby) isss pretty self-explanatory and relatively un-inventive of me.

Pepper's ([livejournal.com profile] piperaceae) is simply a Latin word for her own nickname.

GLaDOS' ([livejournal.com profile] is_still_alive) is playing around with a certain song that she sings in canon.

Mahone's ([livejournal.com profile] neveranyeasier) comes from a quote in canon, just after Michael Scofield has killed someone and is brooding in his cell, at which point Mahone (who is the only one to realize that the 'accident' that killed the other man was set up) shows up to tell him that killing never gets any easier.

San's ([livejournal.com profile] mononoke_san) isn't that inventive, either. 'Mononoke' is a word that, in a broad sense, means 'beast,' thus the title of her canon 'Princess Mononoke' and San is her name, so. :|

Ella's ([livejournal.com profile] a_day_of_sky) is from one of the songs that she sings in canon, called 'I Remember,' in which she talks about what little things she remembers about the outside world, and her last lines are, "And sometimes I think / I would gladly die / for a day of sky."

[livejournal.com profile] shortofcrazy is from an exchange between Riley and Ben in the first National Treasure; I can't remember exactly who says what, but I know it ends with something like: Ben says, "And what does that make us?" Riley says, "Crazy," and then Ben answers, "No, one step short of crazy." SOMETHING LIKE THAT. This game is hard when I am on work's internet and trying not to Google all over the place. But I liked that username for Riley; 'one step short of crazy' seemed like an accurate description, and also, 'short of crazy' sounds like 'sort of crazy,' which is also accurate. As an added bonus, Riley is indeed short.

[livejournal.com profile] fighting_mad is just from the phrase of the same name, which fit Plourr well. Fighting mad as a description of anger, and fighting mad because she likes to fight.

[livejournal.com profile] walking_napalm's username comes from one of the animated Hellboy movies. Liz self-describes as walking napalm in a self deprecatory moment, and I loved that as a way of articulating what she can do with fire.

[livejournal.com profile] nodistresshere is named that because of an exchange in one of the comics where she gets shot and a character says something like, "I love rescuing beautiful damsels in distress." Even when I was a kid, that bugged me; I knew that Iella was no damsel and didn't really need to be rescued. So when the time came to name her journal, I tried every version of "not a damsel" I could think of. They were all taken, so I went with "no distress here."

[livejournal.com profile] nexttimebaby's name is from movie-Rhodey's dialogue, what I think was his most memorable line. I liked it for its brevity, for the way it looked, and because it signified that War Machine is coming.

I didn't name [livejournal.com profile] yankeedoodle_dr ([livejournal.com profile] djcati did that, and I adopted the journal from her), but the name's from an episode where Hawkeye does a ridiculous parody movie as the Yankee Doodle Doctor, and it's perfect. I love it for that and for the more sarcastic undertones; Hawkeye's going to do his job and he's a patriot in his own way, but he'll never be a rah-rah yankee doodle guy. Father Mulcahy is [livejournal.com profile] cheerychaplain, which is self explanatory.

[livejournal.com profile] joiningyousoon comes from a line of Maya's. She tells the sky -- talking to a dead person, in the part where she's gone a little out of her mind -- that she'll be "joining you soon," and it turns out to be true in a very different way than she intended. I liked that. Also, I just really needed a name and couldn't come up with anything.

And finally, the context for [livejournal.com profile] mamaplays2win's username is in her profile. It's one of my favorite exchanges of hers; it cracks me up every time. I think it sums her up well. Mama does play to win.

I HAVE TOO MANY CHARACTERS.

I always want to explain poor Bela's name.

Bela Lugosi played the 1930's Dracula, and Lawrence Talbot was the name of the Wolfman in classic horror films. SO the SPN writers thought, "Har, har, let's create an HOMAGE!"

In the episode that introduces Bela, she goes by the name Lugosi to hire some thugs to steal a dangerous something. So her user name is [livejournal.com profile] not_lugosi! I've worked hard to millicanon exactly why she goes by Bela, though, instead of the name she'd prefer, which is Isabella. Sigh. Goofy writers and their jokes.

Yes, sometimes the meta runs away with the SPN writers a bit.-
