How would you cast, or recast, your pup for a movie? I say recast as so many pups here are from TV or movies already.

spooky_lemur, yet again.

...Hrm. I don't know! I will have to ponder.

...I don't know either.

At least, not for Felix. Casting video game characters, especially those with no voice-acting, is always hard.

I think it might be really neat to see someone totally unexpected - Jonathan Rhys Meyers, maybe - do Frederic.

It's hard for me to divorce characters I solely know from a visual medium from the people who played them, so I wouldn't recast Hannah or Angela or Anna.

The exception there, of course, is Verity, who jumps bodies routinely and so it might be easier to say who I wouldn't cast as her at one point or another. Though she's choosy -- the women in the icons she has now have among them 4 Oscars, 3 Oscar nomiations, 6 Golden Globes, 7 Golden Globe nominations, and a Miss World title.

As for my book-based pups . . . I've used Kate Beckinsale for Amy for so long now, it's hard to think outside that box, though it's meant to be a young, pre-terribly glamourous Kate Beckinsale, from the Much Ado and Cold Comfort Farm era.

I'm not sure on Meg Ford. I love Isla Fisher as her PB, but I don't know that I would see that as a logical choice for a movie. I guess the first question is whether it's Meg from the age I play her, or Meg from her canon. Either way, I shall have to ponder.

On another topic -- I e-mailed you about something yesterday.

The pups from TV that I have, (Coreen and Cleo) I like the women playing them. I can't imagine anyone else playing Coreen. Gina Holden plays her perfectly, and well, some of the reoccuring themes wouldn't be the same.

As to my other pups, including the yet-to-be-apped, I go with who I think they look like, and sometimes ask a few friends for their help, but generally it's on instinct.

[identity profile] wellthrownstone.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I... actually like all the casting for my characters. Most of them are book pups, after all.

What's funny is that I would have used the kid that they cast for the Percy Jackson movie AS Percy but I didn't have any good icons for the kid and I couldn't find pictures where he was old enough.

And, uh... Jeffrey Dean Morgan IS John Winchester. Anyone who disagrees means I get to glare at you.

I use Emily Browning for [livejournal.com profile] yesthatbella (except in a few pics where I liked Kristen icons) because she looks more like the Bella in my head who makes awkward goofy faces a lot.

Kristen does the awkward delivery fine, but for PB purposes I need expressions!

[identity profile] rowanberries.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooo.

Well, I actually think that visually, Jeremy Irons (http://www.sky.com/Assets/Image/StaticFiles/3088010.jpg) was very good as the Patrician, although they went with grey hair and glasses, neither of which are canonical, and a lisp, which also isn't but is HILARIOUS.

For a younger version, a young Keanu Reeves (http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/keanu-reeves-7.jpg) (nice hair, Havelock) with an accent transplant is still probably closest to the image in my head - it's the colouring and awesome blank look.

I'm not sure Captain Jack Harkness could possibly be anyone other than John Barrowman (http://www.scandalouscandice.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/07/14/john_barrowman.jpg). Maybe Rob Lowe (http://reporter.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/08/lowerob.jpg)? They have the same sort of clean-cut looks and charm.

Harth? Tricky. Mind you, in the last season of Doctor Who, there was that guy (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Luke_Rattigan) who just was Harth - a bit too old, but seriously. Elijah Wood (http://freenet-homepage.de/uhlen-abtei/sincity.jpg) also had creepy similarities in Sin City. I have no idea how that bible isn't burning him.

Sabriel kind of depends - I cast Rachel Weisz as her Lirael-age PB, but she's only eighteen in the first book. It's always difficult finding these fantasy types with pale skin and black hair, especially in the age of spraytan. Still, I think she has about the right look (http://www.rachel-weisz.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=3882&fullsize=1), (Touchstone, is that you?) and this is fantasy casting, dammit.

As a long time Angelino, I find it physically and mentally impossible to hear our dear Keanu doing a British accent. My brain laughs at me when I try to envision it. The blank look really is just that. The Meow Mix song playing in repeat behind his eyes. As opposed to Vetinari's very quiet, very ominous gears and cogs ticking away.

My two cents worth, YMMV. :D

I'm still trying to find a good PB for Plourr, three years later. Mariska Hargitay does okay in icons thanks to her ever-changing hair length and her lolarious expressions, but in reality, she's 20 years too old to play Plourr, and way not physically imposing enough. The problem with Plourr is that she's a comic book character and no one actually looks like that, besides maybe, I don't know, particularly feminine female bodybuilders. I used Eve Salvail as a PB for her when she was bald; the bald head, the nasty expressions, the attitude, and the facial structure were absolutely dead on, but Salvail was a model, not an actress. Also, she was a model, so she was terrifying stick skinny, which is so not right for Plourr.

I like Mary McCormack as Maya, but only when her face and hair are looking a certain way. When she's playing Mary Shannon on In Plain Sight -- not so much. But some of the photos that I've seen of McCormack when she's all dolled up at movie premieres and things, heck yes, she could pass for Maya. Maya's another one who's difficult just because of the whole comic book character thing; real people are, frankly, just not that beautiful. I like McCormack's presence, though; she plays badass well, and this is going to sound weird, but her body type is right for the character.

I use Jennifer Jason Leigh as a PB for Iella and I love her; she's perfect. She's exactly the image I always had in my head for Iella, and I would never cast anyone else. Back when I played Tycho, I had Ioan Gruffudd for him, and that's another casting I wouldn't change. He'd have to go blonde and blue-eyed, of course, but he has the aristocratic look down perfectly, and I could see him as Tycho. There's just something about the way that he carries himself that screams Tycho to me.

Terrance Howard did get recast, officially. D: Honestly, neither Howard nor Don Cheadle fits my mental image of Rhodey; Howard came closer, but the voice wasn't right. I don't know who I would suggest instead. This will take some thought!

I would never in a million years recast Sam Puckett, Hawkeye, or Father Mulcahy; I love the actress who plays Sam -- and, frankly, I don't know enough teenage actresses to be able to suggest anyone else; certainly, I don't know of any who could play mean so well and still make the character loveable -- and William Christopher and Alan Alda are Mulcahy and Hawkeye. While I like the movie M*A*S*H, it's too weird watching Donald Sutherland answer to 'Hawkeye,' and that one episode of the show where someone else plays 'Dago Red' (Father M) just isn't right! Riley Poole... I could probably recast Justin Bartha; there are plenty of other actors in Hollywood who could play the snarky technogeek sidekick. Uh. Not that I can think of any right now.

While I like Selma Blair and I am actually not one of those who hates her Liz (there are a whole lot of people who do, I have discovered), she's probably not who I would have cast after reading the Hellboy and BPRD comics. Again, I need to think about who I would have cast instead. This game is hard when you don't have access to IMDB!

I must admit to being somewhat surprised that you have trouble finding a good PB for Plourr. When I think about it, it makes sense (for all the reasons you stated, comic book character, specific build, etc.) but I guess I never really thought about it because I only ever notice those things when I notice somebody either has very few/not very good icons, and Plourr's icons have always been amazing, so...yeah.

I'm suddenly so glad I have lots and lots of material to use for icons and do not need to find a PB for Ichigo because SWEET JESUS I tried that once and never again. Ever.

Finding the right PB for Marcus might be fun though...

Dammit there goes the rest of my day.

It would be awesome if Claudia Black played Commander Shepard in a Mass Effect movie. She doesn't look like my Shepard or sound like the voice actress from the game (Jennifer Hale), but she'd definitely nail the part.

Yes, I know I use Lucy Liu as Shepard's PB, because she looks kind of like her, and Lucy Liu has done plenty of action stuff herself. But she wouldn't be believable as an elite space marine: Claudia, on the other hand, would.

I've recast [livejournal.com profile] jack_inthegreen a few times. When I first wanted to play him I thought I'd use Donal Logue as the PB, but decided I wanted somebody not quite so soft around the edges and went with David Wenham instead. I've also used Billy Boyd for springtime!Jack and Bernard Hill for winter!Jack.

Other than that, my pups are either from visual media or have a definitive look, so recasting just doesn't do it for me. (What would I recast archy as? A ladybug?)

I wouldn't recast River. I have no idea who could play her besides Summer Glau.

For Lan, I really like Clive Owen as his PB. I mean, I could wish he'd do a fantasy epic in which he has shoulder-length hair and a katana and non-Centurion armor, but barring that he's pretty much perfect. I dunno who else would be as good, though I'm sure there are other sufficiently craggy big guys with the right coloring around.

Piotr: no idea! If I had any idea, he might have a PB. *grin* Although I will say that I liked the guy they had playing him in the movies.

Honey: NO IDEA. The idea of a real person playing him unnerves me.

Trowa: Amy's Keanu Reeves icons make me giggle; he has the right kind of impassive blankness! Not the right coloring, though. (And the hair would just have to be infinitely more normal in live-action.) Seriously, I'm not sure who could play him, because I don't pay attention to movies/tv/etc enough to be good at this. I'm not bothered about the coloring so much as the age (especially for canon, when he's 15 and short for it) and the ability to pull off the expressionlessness and body language.

Regan: Uh. Good question! I'm not sure. I like Isabella Hofmann, although I wish there were more pictures of her around. Plenty of other actresses could do a good job of it, several of whom have the right kind of look, but no specifics are springing to mind.

Edel: Her distinctive look is mostly her costume and hair and makeup, all of which are totally insane. Also, she's a puppet. Pretty much any twentysomething female actress I can think of could pull it off. I'm amused by the idea of it being Jessica Alba or someone of similar, er, acting skills, but I dunno if that's what we call a good idea.

I honestly could never ever recast Charlie Cox who plays the best Tristran Thorn my addled brains could imagine. That's a true fact. In turn, no one but Claire Danes could play Yvaine to my Charlie Cox-ed Tristran.

Leo Legrand/Emile Hirsch as James Potter is probably my favourite PB combination for young and older James. Sadly, I ... can't even take credit for finding them because I basically poke Jackie to find my PBs for me. (She also helped me find Albus Potter's PB.)

I admit, when I was playing Fat Charlie, finding the perfect PB for him was hard work. I ended up going between a few actors because certain expressions would work while others wouldn't.

Seth's PB was in an episode of Smallville - from which his icons are from - and I thought the kid really pulled off Seth-like expressions. Plus, he was the rumoured Seth/Jacob for a while, so he was already roped into the Twilightsphere.

I mostly play pups who already have a face and I probably wouldn't change that face for anything.

Like Lee Pace as Ned? Who else could pull off those innocent, shy faces the way Lee can?

Kendra Saunders: a young Dolores del Rio would be fabulous - if she cropped her hair short. Perhaps Nadine Velazquez? Odette Yustman? Kendra needs someone with patrician bone structure (based on how she's drawn fairly consistently in the JSA book and later in Hawkman vol. 4 - see icon), she needs to be wiry and strong, and her mother was Latina (Mexican, to be precise). I got nothing, man. Suggestions? (One of my fave pieces of art of Kendra is this one. Ben - I really like Patrick Warburton (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0911320/) for Ben's human form as he was drawn in the 70s and 80s. For the more recent depictions I would have to go with James Gandolfini (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001254/). I do have to give the F4 movies credit for casting Michael Chiklis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004821/) as Ben.
Val - I'm stuck with Adrianne Palicki (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1597316/) though she is too tall and too old for Val.
Artemus - I can't imagine anyone but Ross Martin (http://www.fiftiesweb.com/tv/wild-wild-west.htm) or Kevin Kline (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000177/) as Artemus Gordon. In fact I had a serious battle between which version of Artemus (tv series or movie) to use because Kevin did such a good job as Artemus.
Capt. Roland - Gates McFadden (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000533/), Brooke Shields (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000222/), Jamie Lee Curtis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000130/), or Kim Cattraill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000326/). No wait, Mimi Rogers (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000211/) would rock!
H.E.R.B.I.E. - Anthony Danials (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000355/). I can't imagine anyone else doing H.E.R.B.I.E.'s voice.
Usagi - I don't know.
Loki - As much as I hate to say it, Megan Fox (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1083271/) comes to mind but I don't know if she has the acting ability. Or maybe Nicole Kidman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000173/) could pull it off.
Emperor Norton - Why won't Johnny Depp (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000136/) and Robert Downey Jr (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000375/) leave my head as casting for this old guy?

And a bonus from Mixed Muses:
Elijah Snow I keep seeing as Rutger Hauer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000442/) and Bug would have to be played by Alan Cumming (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001086/) if a Guardians of the Galaxy movie were to be made.

[identity profile] gammagammahey.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)

For Atton, either Ryan Reynolds or James McAvoy. I wouldn't use either of them as PBs, as their appearances don't exactly fit - Ryan would at least have to dye his hair and eyebrows a fairly dark colour, they'd both have to get contacts, and James would probably have to work out a bit. But I think they'd both be good at playing him - they'd be able to abruptly switch between being snarky, goofy, miserable and cold fairly quickly, and they both have good comic timing.

Not sure about the others.

River? Nope, Alex Kingston *is* River Song in my head. Smile, voice, hair, all of it. Can't imagine ANYONE else playing her.

Same with Gabrielle Anwar as Fiona, Leon Rippy as Earl, Liam Neeson as Mills, even Galina Tyunina as Olga. Voice, attitude, body language, all of it. You can watch the actor put the character on like a suit.

Gecko is real. There is only one Gecko. (And Wendy is his one true love. Ahem.)

Vert? I've gone through a couple of PBs for her already. Fi suggested, most aptly, Audrey Tautou, but I found a stash of Audrey Hepburn icons over at Hollow Art that just captured Vert's impishness. This one will always be in flux for me, I think. It's her nature.

As for comic book Abe, his voice PB is decidedly NOT David Hyde-Pierce. I'm still looking for a voice PB for him, and if you've got a suggestion, I'd love to hear it.

Um, I guess maybe Anne Hathaway for Mia (Ausa, not the role she played in The Princess Diaries)? She's pretty cute and I bet she could be a kickass Guildmaster. I dunno. I'll take suggestions.

Homestar......defies casting. Even if we made him human.

Sly (assuming we anthromophed the pants onto him) would be played by..........dang, who's charming out there nowadays? My definition of charming tends to be Clark Gable. Um..... I bet a younger than Robin Hood: Men in Tights Cary Elwes but with the feel of Robin Hood: Men in Tights Cary Elwes type could do it.

I wouldn't change any of my visual media pups. When I read Jeeves & Wooster now, I see Hugh Laurie in my head. Rachel Luttrell is perfect as Teyla. I'm a little in love with both Kavan Smith (Lorne) and Jonathon Young (Tesla).

John's a little harder for me as he's actually a real person (about whom, apparently, no films other than documentaries have ever been made, which I find rather odd), and I'm having difficulty separating him from his real person-ness. There was talk a while back about making the first book into a film, and the author had some very strong ideas about who he wanted for some of the supporting characters, but none for John. I think, if pressed to choose, I might go with either Lee Pace or Callum Blue for purely aesthetic reasons.

Casting Momiji would be a huge headache. It'd be really hard to balance his tininess and natural-blondness and Asian-ness and girlishness and maleness. I've no idea how that would work.
