Note One: The Tag!Fail post is still open from yesterday, and I will continue working on them today. :O

Note Two: Why didn't anyone tell me how scrubby Gareth David-Lloyd looks in real life? *laughs* (Apologies if I got Ianto's name wrong. He's Ianto.)

Topic: Was anyone ever good at that Sideways Stories from Wayside School series as a kid? The weird-ass math problems? I suck at them. D: D: D:

The what-now? (Guess they didn't have such a thing yet in my long ago youth, or I was a deprived youth.)

I was, however, oddly good at math, given that I hate math and was an English major. (I had the same score on both math and verbal on my SAT, which I think is rare for people who don't get 800s.)

You are EBIL. I love math and as busy as I am I want to drop everything and find these so that I can work on them.

Yes, Ebil is you.

Oh god, Steph, it is like a million degrees, and there is no air-conditioning, and the breeze is somehow being REPELLED from the open window, and I am dying. Disgustingly.

*seriously considering going to jump in pond at Stephen's Green, except there are fucking pike in there, so maybe not*

Are we surprised that I was really good at problems like the ones produced with some Googling?

I would sooooo rather be doing those than writing a chapter introduction right now :/

I am hoping it stays overcast today - I want to get out and take some photos on this roll of B&W film I have in the Pentax, and want good lighting. Also, I need to go hunt around thrift shops in order to try and find a tripod that'll fit the camera.

I suck at math. The end. :D

DAMN STRAIGHT YOU ARE. THE NEWS-GRAPHIC NEEDS YOUR SKILLS.

WHY DO YOU THINK I'M LEARNING 'BOUT SHUTTER SPEED AND DEPTH OF FIELD, BB? :D

The only way to get good is to practice. And if I can shoot good on digital point-and-shoots, AND on manual SLRs, then a digital SLR would be the next step, LOL.

*proceeds to drool at Canon website anyway, and dream*

I am tipping my fedora at you before I fly out the door.

(I SLEPT IN. YES I DID.)

And I really am wearing my fedora! At a jaunty angle! Nothing says "press" quite like it, y/y?

I got an extra two hours to sleep in and I still don't want to move. D:

Though, it would probably help if I hadn't spent a lot of those two hours convinced I got the time wrong or something...

I LOVED THOSE THINGS. But no, I was pretty terrible at them. One of my teachers used to make us try them when I was about nine, but I was just good with regular numbers.

[identity profile] badninja.livejournal.com 2009-09-09 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My brother and I were. They were fun!

Of course, my brother is automatically good at anything math. :9

Now I want to see pups from that series come in and turn something sideways.

Is it possible to grab a tag for a character I am apping this month (late app, as I broke my arm, cam gave me permission) but has not been in yet? He has been used as an OOM npc however, so he has posts in there.

I just tried some from the books. I solved a couple of them, but I needed a clue to do it. Though I would kind of count that as "teaching me how to do the problem" instead of "this is what the number is" kind of clue. I'm still having trouble with one of them.

[identity profile] whisper2ascream.livejournal.com 2009-09-09 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I somehow missed out on those books. Or was slightly too old for them. Shame, I probably would have liked them.

I want to tag the Tagfail, but still waiting to hear about George's app.

And there will be lots of DCon piccys yes yes?

Lj's being screwy today, I don't approve.

I looked up about those stories and I don't remember them at all and I've never been good at math. I can do languages fairly well but math makes me feel so stupid.

I have my first class tomorrow, well my first two, I'm so nervous and excited.

[identity profile] agoodshinkickin.livejournal.com 2009-09-09 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I, like Alex, have no idea what you're talking about. Which is probably for the best as my math skills are...rudimentary at best. I've decided I'm not so much bad at math as I am slow at it. And with my frustration response having a hair trigger...it's just an ugly scene all around.

Not so good at it. The stories were always more fun than the problems, and I could always get another story (for as long as the book lasted) by turning the page.

That said, I say we have the ice cream that tastes like a person be brought out in bar. Remember, the ice cream that tastes like a particular person doesn't taste like anything to that person.

I was never any good at those. (But the one where they count the one girl's mosquito bites still sticks in the memory. XD)
My favorite of the books is Wayside School is Falling Down. It's one of those formative books, really. (Three Chapter 19s! Chapters 20-22 smushed into one after that! STAR BRINGING PURPLE!)

[identity profile] cameoflage.livejournal.com 2009-09-09 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I remembered the books themselves, but I'd forgotten that they even had ones with weird-ass math problems until Google enlightened me.

I'm kind of crap at logic puzzles... well, no, I'd probably be good at them if I actually tried, but I usually don't bother. I don't even attempt to figure them out, I just stare blankly at the page/screen. It's become automatic, even.
