It's a character from the same series the Companions are part of. Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books.

She's a Herald -- i.e. a Companion's Chosen -- and a very independent-minded woman. Stubborn, not to say pig-headed. A former mercenary, and tough as nails and old leather. And she has a sentient sword which protects her against magic, but it (and therefore its bearer) are geas-bound to help women in need. This occasionally leads to Kerowyn having epic silent and one-sided arguments with her sword about practicality.
