BARTENDER POST: IMPORTANT

Hey.

If your character was hired by the bar, it would be beneficial for them to actually work at least once a week. I didn't just hire you all for your benefit. I don't have time to be in regularly any time other than the weekend. You're basically mooching off the bar right now and not giving anything back. Ideally, the bar would be manned nearly all the time, but I would like to see a bartender and a server around just about every night. I don't think this is too much to ask, considering how many people I hired.

Work out a bloody schedule if you have to. I don't care. But if y'all don't work once in a while, your character will be fired for never working. This is especially crucial to the bartenders. I need someone to do Happy Hour nearly every night. I reserve the weekends for myself, but otherwise? I beg you. I don't think this is too much to ask.

I'm around nearly every night, and would serve anyone who asked, but the duel problem is this:

1)My character needs supervision.

2)No one orders from the bartenders anymore. Have you noticed? They order, and then write in the same post that the bar has given them their [whatever]. Sometimes I stalk them down anyway, at which point I'm often scoffed at because, duh, they already have their drinks and Paul is evil.

In summation: not really sure what you're asking for here. A post in the waysbackroom declaring "Hi, barstaff here. Around until [blank], order from me"? I'm not sure people would even care. Scrolling down page doesn't seem to be high on anyone's priority.

When I do Happy Hour posts - which I haven't done in a few nights, because for a while I was doing them basically every night and that gets tiring - I always get a decent number of responses. Not *everybody* who comes in, buit at least four or five threads...

[identity profile] weallscream.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant no ordering in non-happy hour posts, as, obviously, my character can't do those.

[identity profile] weallscream.livejournal.com 2004-10-08 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit that stalking down people and explaining that it's because I am a member of the staff is an easy way into threads, but the inevitable "I've already got my drink go away" blow-off gets old.

I like the forward dating happy hour posts idea a lot. Make it so.

For the newbies like me, we do that because everyone else does and we don't know any better. Since there didn't seem to be any bar staff on at the time (about 11pm-1am British time), what can I do?

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally, and this was the point of hiring so many new people, there would be someone manning the bar at that time at least a few afternoons a week. That has not transpired, for many reasons. We're working on it.

One thing to do is to "ask" the bar for your drink, and then wait for a server to reply to your post bringing it. Use the directory and ping the servers (anthy himemiya, val and peter wiggin, to name a few) to see if they're in and working.

Bartleby-mun just said she is on GMT and will be in from 8-10 your time when she can. So, look for her bartending posts.

I haven't been around much this week, because I've had tonsillitis. I'm going to be back to regular activity soon. But I apologize for that affecting my bar duties.

I'm sure you've probaby noticed - someone might have already mentioned it here, but no one orders from the bartender any more. It's very dispiriting. And many people don't even seem to notice that there's someone behind the bar. (They do in Happy Hour, but that's different.)

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, gosh, make a post about it here in the back room. I have tried before. I am working with the technology and trying to find a way to make the Happy Hour posts appear on top.

[identity profile] watch-wait.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I keep thinking about making a post about it, but any way I phrase it in my head it comes out way too heavy-handed. I'm not good with diplomacy. :D

Plus, I didn't want to step on your toes. :D

due to work sucking arse this week, i've not had 'nysus at the bar much. but he will be in more often, i promise you.

and i don't mind doing happy hour posts, but having to do a summary for every single one of them gets a little...tiring after a while? so i try to space out and give room for other bartenders.

regardless, 'nysus will try to be in more often.

It's cool, baby, you are on a completely different time frame from the rest of us, and you have done your part in the past.

Agh.

Just out of curiosity, when is Happy Hour supposed to be? The Happy Hour posts are posted at any time of the afternoon, night or early morning.

I think that people got used to ordering solely from the bar when Sirius was burned, blind and incommunicado for five weeks. There were very few replacement bartenders at the time.

And I do think that the bartenders need to set up a schedule. As things stand, there are either no bartenders on duty or there are four of them on at once.

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I've ever seen, there is no set time. Sam used to start it between 5pm and 8 or 9pm depending on his schedule. I'm usually just home at 9pm, so when I can I start it then-ish.

I know, during Sirius's confinement, it was Dionysus and me and that was pretty much it. We did our best, but I was utterly transient for most of August.

Dionysus is the late-bartender, since his mun is in Hawaii, and so he sometimes posts Late Night Happy Hour posts. Otherwise, people have been tentative about it, other than Kibeth.

I'd love it if they set up a schedule. I really hope I don't have to do it for them.

If the bartenders or servers can post to the back room when the characters come in to take a shift, that would be awesome. If they can update that post when they leave to say that they're no longer in the bar, that would be even better, so that people know what's what. I do check the main page when I bring my characters in, to see if there's a bartender on staff, but it can be really hard to tell. 99% of the time, there either isn't anyone, it's not clear that someone is on duty, or the bartender/server has already left and there's just no response. So my characters tend to simply order from the bar. Since they tend to move to tables immediately, it's easier than briefly conversing with the bartender for an exchange, then abruptly heading for a table mid-thread. If there's a bartender or server clearly on duty, though, my characters will talk to them in their thread. It just doesn't do any good if I can't tell that they're around.

[identity profile] tropes.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Check out my conversation with Bartleby-mun upthread and tell me if the option we are currently discussing is viable in your opinion. :)

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very much down with the idea of the bar staff posting somewhere to let people know when they're available. I think that the Happy Hour moratorium, though, would just make me less likely to play during the locked-down hours. Things get jumbled, locations get confusing... not to mention that cutting out all other posting for however many hours is inviting the Threadzillae to end all Threadzillae.

Threadzillae can be a pain to navigate even under the best of conditions. If you're journal-switching or the like, it gets even worse, because you end up having to uncollapse threads after every comment you post. Not to mention that loading Threadzillae can take forever, depending on the comment count. It gets slow for me on DSL. I can't imagine what it would be like for someone on dial-up. Then there are just times where it would be more beneficial to have a separate post for certain RP than to have to do things like key plot point advancement in a Happy Hour post. It also makes locating plot threads more difficult for readers, if you have to sift through Threadzillae to do it.

Perhaps a compromise would be to say "These hours are Happy Hour. You can post your own entrance thread, but if your characters want food or drink during these hours, they need to go to the Happy Hour thread to get them. No using the servete spell during Happy Hour." Or even to say that before a mun brings a character in, they should check the back room to see which bartender/server is on duty, and that the servete spell should only be used in a character's entrance pose if there's no staff member available.

It just seems like there should be a way to get people ordering from and interacting with the bar staff without having to put the entire bar on lockdown.

Okay, so here's my question, as a waiter.

If a Happy Hour post is up, and that means everyone needs to order from the bartender and not anything else, does that effectively put the waitstaff out until Happy Hour is over? Or do you just want us to wander around to people who aren't ordering and ask them what they need?
