Wah. It was a good idea anyway.

Re: two votes upstairs: I like how the happy hour posts are now. But the no other posts save for plot advancement -- That mean that all entrance posts are under the Happy Hour post?

(You're just asking to be spammed to heck as bartenders, aren't you? :D)

I agree with Desire!mun. Wouldn't having to post under the Happy hour posts lead to MASSIVE Threadzillas for the Bartender to summarize?

I think Happy Hour woks the way it is now. I'm all for posting in the Back Room, but an umbrella thread just seems a lot of work on the Bartender's part and insanity for all the characters attempting to have their threads under one post.

I totally see what you are saying. I'm guilty of coming in and getting my own drinks because I sometimes don't see the bartender posts. I think it would be cool if you could find a way to keep the post on top, or just link the happy hour thread in the back room. If there was a bartender that Is where I would order or wait to be served.

Qualifying my answer to the second: Sometimes it depends on who I've got in/whether they need to talk to someone - it's faster to get a drink from the bar itself and head over to whoever the character needs to talk to than to wait for the poor bartender to get a comment in there. Also, Pestilence tends to just get drinks from the bar. (Which might be better for everyone's health, really - say what you will about the business clause, it's not easy keeping all that stuff under control. The worst you're likely to encounter is a cold, but still.)

Qualifying my vote for restricting new posts only to plot advancement -- for some people, the entrance post is their plot advancement. I'm not opposed to having separate personal posts for characters, rather than making everyone stay under the Happy Hour thread unless they have an explicit plot point to advance. To use Liz to illustrate my take on it...

Before: Liz enters from wherever. She goes to the bar and gets whatever. She moves to her table and sits. Whee.

Under the proposed Happy Hour restriction, there would be two options:

1) Liz enters from wherever. [a href="link to her thread in the Happy Hour Post"] She goes to the bar and gets whatever. [/a] She moves to her table and sits. Whee.

2) [Enter in the Happy Hour thread, chat with the bartender, and get whatever, none of that detailed in her main page post]
Liz sits at her table. Whee.

Few people, I think, come in with specific plot advancement in mind for the night. The plot advancement just happens in the threads. So, cutting individual character posts might not be the best of ideas. I'm more of a mind of just cutting food/drink requests in personal threads when there's a bartender on duty, and requiring people to go the bartender's thread for that kind of stuff instead of just using the servete spell.

And I'm sure that all just made entirely no sense. I'm high on cleaning product fumes at the moment. If I just served to confuzzle, I can try to clarify my meaning further.

That makes perfect sense to me. I vote for it.

Made sense to me.

Gotta agree; I've been trying to think of more creative ways of entering, but rarely have specific plot in mind upon my enterance.

I vote for that.

I, too, vote for it.

Entrance posts, so far as I've seen, tend to be a way of announcing "Hey, I'm here!" so that everyone will see it, which can be vital for plot if it's not something preplanned. But I see no problem with using links and Millitime judiciously to acquire food and drink and so forth from the bartenders, and thus RPing that part of the whole Milliways experience, instead of just getting it from the bar as if it were a Star Trek replicator.

Having read all of the above, I have to agree with Liz-mun's second idea, and the idea that the Bartender post in Back Room when in bar, and then modify when exiting bar. At the least, it will give the bartender more to do.

On the topic of summarizing, though, if we end up with this format, it's going to be a whole lot of "So-and-so gets a drink, and leaves." Perhaps we can make Bartender summaries so that they only summarize any pertanent plot points that may have happened in the thread?

[identity profile] wine-women-song.livejournal.com 2004-10-09 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I suppose. I was under the impression that summaries happen for threads that have a lot of posts (threadzillae, what have you)...though though those do tend to be where something happens.

Agreeing with iz-mun, pretty much - making it too restrictive could get really annoying, particularly since one of the things that is best about Milliways is the freedom.
