OUR POWERS COMBINED
So I meant to make this post a good week ago, but the hat-trick of a Millicon in Denver, surpries food poisoning, and two transatlantic flights sort of put me out of the game for a bit. HOWEVER, better late than never, I suppose, so lend me your ears, ladies and gents, and I will stop running off at the mouth keyboard and get around to saying what I actually meant to make this post to say. In this post. Yes. (I'm still really exhausted, can you tell?)
Aaaanyway.
Unless you've been living under a rock (and hey, you're gamers, we're gamers; we're not here to judge), odds are you've heard about the earthquake that devastated the nation of Haiti on January 12th. Since then, fandom has responded in a truly incredible way; in addition to various fund-raising efforts in individual fandoms, the centralised fandom auction at
help_haiti is on its way to raising in excess of $115,000 for relief and rescue efforts. That is breathtaking. If you have already donated, whether as part of a fandom effort or no, we applaud you; if you have not, we urge you to sally forth and give what you can.
help_haiti's current Lightning Round is open until Sunday, with another planned for next weekend, as well as another full auction in the pipeline for February. You donate to the relief effort, you get fannish goodies - win-win, right?
OR IS IT.
(Here's the part where the subject line comes into play.)
After all, this is Milliways. We eat injokes and obscure fandom crossover interests for breakfast. And sometimes it can be, well, a little tricky to explain to the world why you need fic about how the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork's elderly terrier is actually a Shakespearian sprite/icons of Breckin Meyer with a baby bump/your knitted rabbit to be red with glowy eyes and fangs/your home-made snacks to taste almost exactly like onion rings don't. It's a whole thing, you just had to be there, IT'S COMPLICATED, OKAY.
Don't worry. We understand. And we're here to help.
Milliwaysers, it is time to use our powers for good. And by 'powers' I mean 'auctionable skills', and by 'good', I mean... 'an auction'.
A NOTE: this is not going to be something massively organised; we are playing it loose and informal, here. If you'd rather something more structured/policed, please do pitch in at
help_haiti, they are BAMFs.
That being said, here's how this is going to work. In the comments to this post, there are two main threads: Skills and Requests. You can reply to either or both of these as appropriate.
To donate in response to an offer or a request fulfilled, please see this post at
help_haiti for a list of suggested charities working with the Haiti relief effort. However, please remember to check whether the offerer has listed a preferred charity for donations, or has requested proof of donation via screencap/email/whatever.
---------------------
If you have skills to offer for auction, comment under Skills. The format should be as follows:
Name:
my_lj_name/Name Y'All Know Me By
Characters: Character A (
character_a), Character B (
character_b)1
Email: my.email at gmail dot com
Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Be as extensive as you like, here - this is a Weird Crossover Safe Space, after all, and if you don't specify that you are willing to write both Jack Sparrow and Lovecraftian Cthulu Mythos, how will people know to request metaphysical World's End tentacle!fic? HOW???? Alternatively, you can always just reply to this with 'TRY ME' - though bidders take note, this means you should check your request with the offerer before moving any money around.
Examples of work: Self-explanatory! Link to your photobucket/deviantart/fic tag/LJ icons/whatever. This is optional, but preferred.
OFFERING: Fic/icons/layouts/banners/manips/podfic/dramatic thread readings/art/beta readings/knitted goods/cookies/your skill here.
You should specify here the terms/limitations of your offer. For example:
100 words of fic for every $2 donated, up to 2,000 words. If possible, email or include screencap of donation in comment.
Or:
20 icons for highest bidder by noon EST tomorrow, bidding to start at $5. Winner may donate to charity of their choice.
The terms of your offer are up to you, but remember, this is quick'n'dirty territory here - you will be in charge of keeping track of bids, communicating with your bidders to confirm whether the winners have donated, discussing requests, etc.
Notes: This is where you should make a note of things you won't write/draw, mention that you're going on safari in two days and won't have internet access, warn bidders that you can currently only knit hats for footballs and/or very pointy babies, or basically include anything you can think of that doesn't really fit anywhere else.
1You don't have to list all your characters here - but mentioning at least one or two main ones would certainly be useful, especially for potential bidders who might not know you all that well OOCly. OH THAT GUY, etc.

If you have a request you are willing to pay for in donations, comment under Requests. The format should be as follows:
Name:
my_lj_name/Name Y'All Know Me By
Characters: Character A (
character_a), Character B (
character_b)
Email: my.email at gmail dot com
REQUEST: As with offerings, the terms of your request are up to you, as is organising/dealing with responses. Examples might be:
Will donate $10 to Red Cross for an iPhone wallpaper of Ben Wade/Russian Astronaut. Comment to claim, and leave an email address; I will send you some of my favourite pics you could use.
Or:
Will donate $5 for every drabble (about 100-200 words) involving a humorous use of the Emergency Potato, with a limit of $30 (i.e. six drabbles).
Notes: Again, similar to offerings - anything you especially don't want in your requests, or anything else it would be important to mention.
Copypasta:

This mini-Milli-auction-stravaganza-fest-moot will remain open for offers/requests/bids until MIDNIGHT EST, SUNDAY 31ST JANUARY.
By midnight on MONDAY 1ST FEBRUARY, all winning bids should be donated, all promised rewards should be in the proper hands, and all claimed requests should be fulfilled - OR the parties concerned should at least be in contact and discussing deadlines for fic/postage dates/etc. etc. If you have made a donation/created something for auction/whatever and heard nothing from the other party by this time, contact your trusty mods and we will do out best to straighten things out.
I... I think that may be (almost) everything for now, but you certainly shouldn't take my word for it (I'm very tired; did I mention this?). So if you have any questions, please direct them here.
Finally-finally, I believe I may have mentioned once or twice that I am somewhat tired; pooped; worn the fuck out. So to kick things off, because I cannot guarantee any sort of productivity in the near future, I instead promise to match, via donation to Partners in Health, whatever amount of money is raised in the comments of this post, up to €150 (approximately $212).
Happy bidding!
SUPER TEAM MILLIWAYS COMBI POWER GO

- Sophie, for the Milliways Mods
P.S. Don't forget to pimp this around! Unthinkable as it may seem, there are in fact Milliwaysers who do not religiously follow the back room, so get thee to thine LJs and thine flists and thine crackchats, and foist this upon them!
ETA: A quick clarification: fics and icons and whatnot do not have to be Milliways-centric! You can offer any non-Milliways fandoms and characters you know, and request likewise. It's simply a prime opportunity to milk the world for some of that particular crossover universe or transdimensional ship that only exists in this strange and wonderful corner of the internet.
RUNNING TOTAL

$704 + $212 = $916

Re: SKILLS
Characters: Fakir (
Email: rymenhild@yahoo.com
Fandoms/Milliways Characters:
Princess Tutu, The Secret Garden, The Dark is Rising/Vorkosiganverse/Fionavar, The Golden Compass and most Milliwaysian and nonMilliwaysian Arthuriana are fair game. I can probably squeeze in some Young Wizards and Unfortunate Events in a pinch, but there's no guarantee I know the Milliways events involved. Edit: There's also Valdemar and its Milliways connections...
Examples of Work: Uh, they're around somewhere, and I can find them if necessary.
Offering: Drabbles. 100+ word stories in fandoms listed above and related Milliways storylines. I'm going to say that each drabble is $5, and that I will write up to six, first-come, first-served. If I have trouble with a prompt, I'll reply and tell you so and ask for further suggestions. If I accept your drabble request, I'll let you know right away.
Notes: I don't write smut, and I don't often write slash. Milliways exceptions: Lyra/Anthy, Lyra/other female characters if you make a case for them, Fakir/...lots of people. If you have a pairing in mind, just ask.
Re: SKILLS
Characters: Havelock Vetinari (The one in-bar and the one with the fairy terrier!), Harth Fray, Captain Jack Harkness, Sabriel, and a general backlog.
Email: rowanberries at gmail dot com
Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Umm... A lot? Ask me, in a pinch, if it's important.
Examples of Work: Random icons here (http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/amyberries2/Icons/).
OFFERING: Icons! Mostly basic resizing, colour alteration, text. No less than 20, may be more if it happens that way. To the highest bidder! Start at $5, and I'll call a halt at 6pm GMT tomorrow. That's, um... *checks converter* 1pm EST. I think. In the event of a tie, I shall attempt both!
Notes: I'm fairly limited, sadly, so can't manage animation, but I'll have a go at most things, including changing hair/eye colour, editing in things (last one was an eyepatch onto a base, that seemed to work), making character bases - basically most of my experience has been with making PB pictures into icons and tweaking them. I will mess around quite happily!

Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Any of the Treks, though I admit I'm best at TNG and DS9, Young Wizards (Millicanon and not, though the Millistuff might require a little rereading), Band of Brothers, a handful of other characters scattered all over the multiverse (the Taos kids come to mind)
Examples of Work: If I've posted it anywhere, chances are you'll find it under the scribble tag at my lj.
OFFERING: As they say, or at least as I say, fic ahoy! Let's see... how about 1 US dollar for every hundred words of fic, Milliways or not, up to 1000 words.
Notes: AUs, might-have-beens and character studies are love. Not that anything else isn't, but I really <3 the above. Slash and femslash are fair game, but if you're after smut... call it a maybe.

Examples of Work: Here's a mix I made recently for an OC (
OFFERING: Fanmixes and non-fanmixes! For an idea of my general musical tastes, this is my library on last.fm, and it's been tracking what I listen to since July 2006.
Give me a character (Dorothy Zbornak?), a pairing (Dorothy/Stan?), or a theme (riding around in a Studebaker and not getting yourself knocked up by a yutz?), and I will make you a twelve-song mix. (Or more, but I promise twelve minimum!) I will make up to five mixes at $6 each.
Notes: I am not one of the people who likes to make art for each mix, but if you want, I will try to come up with something iTunes-library-suitable -- just make a note of that.

Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Robin Hood legend, Greek mythology, Abhorsen Chronicles, Narnia, Becoming Jane, Supernatural, Diana Wynne Jones, always willing to try a Milliways' crossover if I know the characters well enough. I read a lot so don't consider this all of mine just the ones I can recall at the moment.
Examples of Work: Last prompt meme that I did, also my first Yuletide story from this year can be found under the username FiKate.
OFFERING: I'm going to use Rym's idea since its good. Drabbles 100+ word stories and each one $5 dollars with a limit of six.
Also since cookies are going over so well, for the last holiday season, I made a type of NZ cookie called afghans, they're basically chocolate shortbread with cornflakes in them. I'd say for the nice price of 8 dollars, I will send the first four people a drabble and a box of cookies.
Notes: I'm willing to try to write most things but my style tends towards snapshot like fics so be aware of that.
Sorry for all the edits, my html keeps getting borked.

UNRELATED TO FANDOM BUT STILL ON OFFER: I am going to be making soap this afternoon from olive oil, coconut oil, distilled water, and lye. Possibly also essential oils, but not necessarily. The soap is going to be mostly olive oil-based, with the coconut oil added to improve lathering; the lye is, well, necessary, because lye + fat + water = soap. This will take roughly one week to cure to the point where it can be cut and shipped. If you are interested, that's available too- $4 for a 5-ounce bar, either with or without the cedarwood/clove/eucalyptus essential oil blend I plan to use. No animal ingredients unless a drifting cat hair gets into the mix when I'm not looking.

I will promise five hand-stamped/hand crafted cards (blank inside) with envelopes for every $5(US) donated, and mail them to you upon completion. I have a pretty extensive stamp collection, so themes, colors, etc. may be pretty negotiable. If you do not specify theme or color, I will send out a variety. Email me for details, requests or questions. (This is not my work, but is an example of the type of cards I can make.) I don't have pictures of my work online because the store I used to teach card making at has closed and the website deleted. If you do not specify theme or color, I will send out a variety. Email me for details, requests or questions.
My sister has also generously agreed to donate two of her handcrafted bottle cap dolls. (Again, this is not her work, but is an example of the type of doll she creates. I think hers are nicer than the one shown. ;-P) Each doll is unique and sells at art fairs for at least $25 dollars a piece. The first two people to donate $20 (US) each will each get one doll of my sister's choosing. I will mail them to the donors at my own expense.
Email me or ping me at AisforAmy2007 with questions.

Examples of Work: Um...if you really must peruse? xD
OFFERING: Fic is pretty safe methinks. $5 per 100 words seems to be the going rate, though I will add I will take five people no matter how many words you want me to write, limit...1500 words? So if you all want 1000 word fics, it will all get done. To ensure this, when you reply with your prompt, leave your email and I will email you the outline of the story if said story is over 500 words. (If you want.) That way you know what you're in for!

Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Difficult to say, inasmuch as I give a different list every time I'm asked. In general, I either know a given canon fairly well, or not at all. That said, off the top of my head I'd be willing to work with Golden Sun; Final Fantasy IV, V, or VI; Harry Potter; Star Trek (TOS, TNG, or relaunch!DS9 preferred, although I'll try any other than ENT); Young Wizards; Avatar: The Last Airbender; anything Pixar; Zeldaverse; and various small book-based fandoms (of which there are a whole lot, and I'm not about to try to list them all). I'd prefer, for this, not to work with Pirates of Penzance, as I've already got
Examples of Work: I... haven't done anything I'm all that pleased with, at least not for public view. You can see a couple of my old Golden Sun fics at my FF.N profile, but I know I can do a lot better than those now, given ideas.
OFFERING: Fic is the most likely. I can do icons, as long as you don't need more than cropping and resizing, although I'm not very good at finding pictures on my own. I might well be able to try my hand at fanart, although access to a scanner may be troublesome and I don't promise to be much better at it than Sokka. If I can get the software to talk to my computer, I may be able to offer Order of the Stick-style fanart.
I have no idea what would be a good price schedule; pay as you choose.
Notes: I do not, by any means, promise promptness. Between homework, household responsibilities, and the trouble of getting into a ficcing mindset, it could be several days between request and receipt. I will, however, make a greater-than-usual effort for this. I will not do anything slashy or smutty. I would quite enjoy the possibility of sticking characters into other characters' worlds, whether through Milliways (or some other nexus) or utterly without explanation. The more specific the prompt, the better.

Fandoms/Milliways Characters: If you can give me references, I can work with it.
Examples of Work: Here are some recent doodle posts – [1] [2] [3] [4]
OFFERING: Art! Specifically a drawing of your/someone's character, doing whatever it is that character likes to do. Digital inks and colours, a 'clean doodle' I guess you could say—similar to the Sally Sparrow drawing in the first example link above, or the Mills drawing in the fourth link. I will email you the original full-sized file (roughly 5x7"—postcard size—at 300 dpi) so that you can make a print of it if you like.
For every additional $10 bid to the total, I will add another character to the image, up to a total of three. So if the winning bid is $20, you get a picture of two characters, $30 will get you three… $40 will still get you three, though, because it gets complicated beyond that. I will take whatever the winning bid is on January 31st, when this post closes; you are therefore unlikely to have your picture by the first, but I will aim to have it done within a week.
This can be three characters in one image, or three separate images, or, I don't know, one image with two characters and then one of those same characters in a separate image, WHATEVER. Posing and all of that is up to you.
Notes: Will not do porn, sorry. Kissing is okay! Violence is also okay. Does not have to be Milliways-related.
This is my first time doing something like this, so if I've left something out or you have questions, please just ask.

Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Check the drabble posts below; I think I listed fandoms in both. And I'll definitely write for Milliways or any of my Milliways fandoms! When in doubt, just ask; I'm more than happy to give pretty much anything a shot.
Examples of Work: Drabble post #1, drabble post #2, and the longer story that I wrote for Yuletide: A Very Serious Matter.
I don't have any examples of work for my cookies. But they are tasty? More on that in a minute.
OFFERING: I'm offering one dozen cookies plus one drabble for the first three people who comment. I'm going to try to somehow theme them together, though as a disclaimer, the themed connection may be gleefully lame. :D (Example: the drabble is about Riley Poole, whose username is shortofcrazy, so there are nuts in the cookies. Mmm, nutty!) In exchange for each set of baked goods + drabble, I'd ask for a donation of $10 to Partners in Health. Will ship anywhere in the world; the drabble will likely be scrawled by hand and slipped into the package.
Notes: So what I need to know from interested folks is this: fandom(s), character(s), and/or prompt(s) for the drabble (and if you want to know if I'll write something that's not on my list, just ask!). I also need to know if you have any food allergies or dislikes that I should be aware of! I'm going to choose the type of cookies myself for ease of baking and shipping (I don't want to ship you a box of crumbs!), but if you are deathly allergic to peanuts or really love dark chocolate or have other dietary considerations, I'll totally work with that! I'll also run the type by you before I bake them and send them off.
I will most likely be working with recipes from this cookbook; the recipes are dairy- and egg-free, but they taste just like regular cookies and they are super tasty, I promise. Several Milliwaysers have tasted my vegan cupcakes made from recipes by the same authors, and (hopefully) can vouch for this!
Final note: this is going to take me some time; I probably will not bake, write, and send until mid-February. If you're okay with that, let's go! :D

Characters: a pack of manwhores and crazypants, including some who are both. Antony
Email: pastrydeity at gmail dot com
Fandoms/Milliways Characters: I'm willing to give most things a try. Poke me and ask.
Examples of Work: uh... almost all icons here, and many of here and here.
Also, these little guys here, here and here.
OFFERING: I can do screencaps for ya, if you happen to want screencaps of a particular character from a show or movie (as long as I have it on DVD; poke me and I can tell you what I've got). Let's say $7 per focus character per episode/movie, as many as I can get, though if you've got scenes/moods you'd like me to focus on, can do. Not icons, just raw image files, though we could probably negotiate an icon deal from there if you really want...
Also, you see that second set of links up there? Those are the Dreamcypher-era lineup of the Cruxshadows rendered in doll form, about four inches tall. I can make a doll of the character of your choosing, provided I'm given good enough reference pictures of the character and the outfit that you want. Limited to materials I have on hand (I've got a big fabric stash for clothes, and a decent range for hair and trimmings, but you'd best be okay with having your doll be really pale). They're handmade and time-intensive so I'm only doing one, and think I'll start the bidding at $10.
Notes: I work full-time and have some obligations outside of work, so weekends are best for me to work on things. Making a doll will probably take a couple weeks; I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Any questions, just ask. :D ?

Characters: Elle Bishop (
Email: shoroko@sbcglobal.net
Fandoms/Milliways Characters: Anything listed above, and, well, you can ask, but it may not matter that much for what I'm offering.
Offering: I don't have time to commit to drabbles and fic, but I've been kind of having fun with this, so - if you ask, I will make profile layouts and ljournal banners for your characters. All I ask is that you provide raw text and at least some suggestion for images if you ask for a profile table, and dimensions for a journal banner if you have something specific in mind. Examples of the profile layouts I've made are here, here, and here. Journal banners include all those for the journals listed here. And mine!
I'll take requests for profile tables until midnight EST January 28 at $8 each, and up to five journal banners for $5 each.
Notes: While I'll host the images myself to preview profile layouts and banners for you, you'll have to host those images when you use them yourself. And... I can't think of anything else! I may extend the deadline on tables if I don't get a lot of buyers, but I'll... just come back and make a note of that, I guess.

OFFERING: I will do a waist-up doodle of your character looking badass (assuming they are a badass; feel free to request them looking otherwise). This will be digitally drawn and coloured, and I will e-mail you the high-rez version of the file.
I will take up to three of these requests, at $5(US) each.

Examples of Work: Hold that thought. Ask for a specific, and I'll give you one.
OFFERING: "Let Me Google That For You" Custom Research Services!
Have a character or a setting that requires detail that you don't have time and/or interest in hunting up? Need a background or some sort of information to expand on the scant scraps canon gives you? Or do you merely have questions about particular subjects that you want answers to?
I will do custom research on your question or topic of choice, whatever it may be, and present you with a summary, itemized points where applicable, and sources cited for your further reference. Average summary will be around 2 full typewritten pages, no less than one.
$5 donation per summary requested.
Notes: Summary length based on amount of available information. If I just can't find any information at all on your topic, I will tell you, and in that case will offer to create a fictional summary out of whole cloth or to repay the donation price to you directly.

Fandoms/Milliways
I...I probably know your characters, if you know mine. I read waaaay too much Milliways. But Young Wizards, Princess Tutu, Fionavar, Dalemark Quartet, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Homeward Bounders, and Lord of the Rings are the surest bets. (No Silmarillion, though, please--I am a research addict and it will get me mired in HoME for the next month :))
If it's outside of this, ask me! The answer is "um probably yes!" though I might have to tack on a day or two for reading threads, etc.
Examples of Work
I only really write for yuletide, but!
http://archiveofourown.org/users/TLvop (Fringe, The Thief series, The Dalemark Quartet, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; these are all pretty normal quality for me)
and
http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/77/enpointe.html (Princess Tutu; this is the story I'm proudest of and cannot guarantee to do as well as!)
and
http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/70/entartetekunst.html (The Company series--which I am not offering as it is very long and involves way too much research. But it might be helpful! If full of typos! :D)
Offering:
1000 word fic (might go a bit over) for $10, limit 3.
Rough drabbles (as in, I might slip in a few extra words--unless you want a hardcore drabble, in which case I will make it work!) for $5, no limit.
Drabbles should be done by the Wednesday evening after the end of bidding (I will try to get earlier requests done earlier! But definitely by then :D). 1000 word fic I will try to have done by the sunday evening after the end of bidding; if I get all three requests, however, I don't want to skimp on them by rushing them? But it will be by two weeks absolute max.
Please post/e-mail me a screencap of your donation :D.
Notes: I don't write above PG-13, which for me is: anything more than kissing, and any sort of heavily described gore. I'm pretty okay with psychologically disturbing things, though--I'll tell you if there's anything I can't write :) <3

REQUESTS
Re: REQUESTS
I'll donate either to a charity of your choice or our national catastrophe relief coalition which is channelling donations to the actual charities that work in the region. Unless I find a way to directly donate to the THW, who are getting mobile water treatment plants into Haiti (same organisation whose big pumps helped get the Katrina water out of New Orleans); but it seems they want no stinkin' money, they just want qualified engineers and mechanics as volunteers. **shrug**
