It's still "blizzard weather," right?

I knew this was going to happen the second this scene ended.

Guys, I made Freedom Cookies.

Let me share the magic.

I used a Paula Deen recipe because she's always a good bet with desserts.

Ingredients
1 cup peanut butter (I used organic crunchy, because I'm a snob and because I thought the extra oil would help)
1 cup sugar (I ignored the extra 1/3 in the recipe, considering the next ingredient)
M&Ms (amount is up to you and the size of the cookies)
1 egg
1 TSP Vanilla extract

I also added nutmeg and cinnamon because I'm a snob.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine all ingredients together - you can combine M&Ms here, too, but I'd be worried about them breaking and then melting unrecognizably in the oven. I left them out for this point.

Roll dough into balls about the size of walnuts. Flatten them gently with your palms for wider cookies. Bake 12 minutes on a greased or foiled pan.

As soon as they come out of the oven, press the M&Ms into the cookies. Wait a minute or two before moving to a wire rack for cooling. The candies will fuse to the dough, but the cookies are still a tiny bit crumbly when you bite into them, so if you like a neat kitchen (or you don't have a dog), napkins are helpful.

I'm also including my grandmother's recipe for dry hot chocolate mix because today is a sugar coma sort of day.

1 part powdered milk
1 part creamer
1 part powdered sugar
1 part Nestle Quik

1/3 cup of this mixture per mug is more than enough.

This stuff smells like Lucky Charms, it is so utterly packed with early-onset diabetes. Use with caution.

(but totally use it because oh my god)

Oh, these look good and I have everything but the M&Ms but I have chocolate. I think I may end up making cookies. Thank you.

...omg, these look gorgeous and totally easy to make and...I want some.

That is all.

(Damnit, I have all the ingredients too, bar M&Ms. But I can substitute. Unf. They look delicious.)

Blarg, not Paula Deen! I'm not a cooking snob or anything (........well, okay, I AM, but this is a different issue) but I can't get behind Paula Deen. Her face scares me. D:

I otherwise approve of this recipe and have used cocoa powder in it before for fudgey peanut buttery goodness as well as a little stability in the dough without adding flour. I also tried these with oatmeal before with very tasty results.

Oooooh, recipes! I shall return the favour with my current favourite cookie recipe, found on the Carnegie Mellon KGB bboard and tweaked slightly:

Ingredients
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp orange zest (I use fresh)
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cardamom
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 6 oz chocolate chips
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cut butter with sugar until homogeneous.
  3. Add egg, vanilla, ginger, orange; mix well.
  4. Separately, sift flour with salt, baking powder, and spices; mix in oats.
  5. Combine with wet ingredients and mix in chocolate chips.
  6. Chill, then form into 1 to 1½" balls and bake for 8-12 minutes (or just able to pass toothpick test; watch carefully). Make about 2 dozen.

And my cupcake recipe of choice, modified from Bake Your Heart Out:

Ingredients
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1½ cup flour
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 12 Caramel Hershey's Kisses™
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Put all ingredients in a bowl in order given. Do not mix until last item has been added. Then beat approximately 3 minutes on medium speed.
  3. Spoon a large spoonful of batter into the bottoms of cupcake liners or greased cupcake pan. Place one upwrapped Kiss lightly atop the batter in each cup. Distribute remaining batter over Kisses.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Makes about 1 dozen, depending how full you fill the cups.
