Your character has to give a pep talk to a sports team. What do they say and how is it received?

(Reminder: I am not here on Fridays for the rest of the semester due to student teaching. Open DE tomorrow.)

Anna would start her pep talk by climbing up onto the Gatorade cooler so that everyone could see her.

And then it would go something like this . . .

"Okay, so we had a really bad first half. Like, really really bad. In fact, the first half word-that-rhymes-with-ducked. But you know what comes after the first half? Well, I guess it comes after halftime, really, but then . . . there's a second half! And we can make it go a whole lot better! Because when the going gets tough, the tough get going! And that doesn't mean that they all leave, like I used to think it did, until Daddy explained. That means they get going on a plan to make things go better. So forget about the first half, maybe don't even look at the scoreboard or anything because it'll just be depressing, forget about that and play a really, really good second half and maybe people will forget about the first half because they'll be so impressed with the second half, just like nobody talks about all the times my friend Jake messed up when he was learning to play the piano, they just talk about how good he is now. And, hey, maybe those other guys will have a really bad second half while we're having a really good one and it'll all even out. Anyway, it's time to go out there and do the very, very best you can, because you should always do the best you can, and give 100%. Some people will tell you to give 110% but this is silly, because there are only 100 percents to anything, Mrs. Edwards said so, and she teaches math so she would know. Go team!"

As for how it's received . . . wouldn't you go give all 100 percents at that point?

"Get out there and play your best. If you embarrass me, I'll kick your ass worse than the other team could ever dream of."

"If you don't win, I will eat your livers, starting with the person who played the worst."

Skaði'd do it, too, so it would probably inspire enough fear to motivate the team. And if not, hey, dinner.

Never give her a sports team you might want back someday.

Oh, man. Flashbacks to a Werewolf: the Apocalypse setting a friend of mine once suggested, a small town in Minnesota populated entirely by Get of Fenris werewolves and their kinfolk. The football coach's idea of a pep talk was something on the order of "Okay! Now go out there on the field and do that thing where all of you get huge and hairy and full of fangs and the other team runs away screaming in terror!"
winter_arrows: (smile)

[personal profile] winter_arrows 2011-02-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
That is awesome. ^_^

[identity profile] rowanberries.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I do encourage you to win."

...The subtext would be aaaaall in the sinisterly pleasant tone of voice.

And the team would damn well win, out of sheer terror.

I just did a massive spit take of green tea when I read this due to laughter. Because it's totally true.

Knox is laughing his head off, because he is a dyed in the wool sports fan but one who thinks the locker room pep talk is a load of crap. At least for the pros. "Anyone who gets that kind of money shouldn't need motivating." Sometimes, he's a real cynic.

I tried to think of one for Belar and all I could picture was the year I rode in a bicycle century (a hundred mile ride) sponsored by Blue Point Brewery. There were event jerseys with the slogan WE RIDE FOR BEER on the front (and WE RIDE FOR PIE on the back, as the rest stops all had pie). They sold out in a day and a half.

Pretty sure Belar's sports speech would be in the WE RIDE FOR BEER category.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I want a jersey like that! And now I really want there to be a Team Belar as well.

Will wouldn't be that good at a pep talk I think. He'd just lead by example.

Sameth actually wouldn't suck, he'd say this is what we did wrong, let's do better.

Moist wouldn't set foot near a game if he could help it.

Jane would just go out on the field and do a better job to be in inspiring, its canon.

William would be rather confused and probably angry which would get everyone else going, okay.

Demeter would depend who they were playing, she can be scary when she wants to but she tends to go for the nicer cheering on.

Tumnus would feel rather awkward.

The Pirate King's entire first song is rather like this, come on, Frederick, be a good pirate.

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2011-02-17 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Moist would have been near The Game, canonically or post-canonically (one can assume that the Postmaster General has been invited?)?
ceitfianna: (Tiwa playful)

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2011-02-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, he would but I think he'd be wary of it. I can see him trying to figure out the right response as Spike glares at everyone.
yakalskovich: (Überwald)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2011-02-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be fun to imagine Moist and Spike at the game. It would be a fun fic to write...

Oh, by the way, for the next app cycle, should we get Spike reserved/unappable, just in case?
ceitfianna: (Hatter is bemused)

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2011-02-17 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It would, I'd have to reread Unseen Academicals first before I could write it myself. I don't know.
yakalskovich: (Überwald)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2011-02-17 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I reread it just last week. If we ever find ourselves with too much time on our hands, bored with nothing else to do, we can write it together. It would be fun. Margolotta is there as well, after all.-
ceitfianna: (Jane thoughts consume me)

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2011-02-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be interesting. I have to admit, I plan on putting off his canon for a good long while. Its absolutely fun, but I'm just not ready for him to be there yet. Today is just being blah for me.

I think I'm going to try out a Bollywood dance video I picked up and see if that snaps me out of things more.
yakalskovich: (Homo homini lupus)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2011-02-17 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a Bollywood dance video, too, that is very, very pink. I did it just once, to feel the principle of that kind of dance, but my little lady liked it when she was here...

Ben would pace up and down the locker room, gesticulating madly as he spoke in a very deep and emotional voice, "Guys, I know we're down and the other team looks bigger but I gotta tell yeah, you can do it. Don't quit! When King Leonidas faced the Persian army did he quit? When Captain America faced Thanos, a mad space god, did he quit? When I faced a resurrected Terrax and was gettin' my butt handed to me did I quit? NO! And you tell me where any of these guys are now? You may think just cause they're bigger than you they're gonna win. NO! Heart is what's gonna win, heart and stubbornness. Now get out there and don't give up. Make them work double for anythin'! Put the fear inta them and the game's yers."

And then one hand will raise and say, "Coach Grimm, can I go to the bathroom before we start?"

"Yeah, Timmy. Anyone else need ta go?"

I don't know how much his speech will affect the next half of the Pop Warner game but I'm sure it will sit in their minds for the rest of their lives.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What I want to see is Shulkie and Ben give a pep talk together. Ben's all "Did I let Thanos stop me? NO!" while Jen would say "Whomsoever throws the winning touchdown gets a date with me."

And then she'd show her cleavage.

Heheheh I'd feel sorry for the other team.

And I really want a mini-series of Ben, Jen, Herc, and Clint (with maybe a guest spot to Spidey) on one team. It'd have to be a mini as the snark would be so awesome an on-going would rip the fabric of space time.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be even funnier if Jen decided that since she couldn't keep the Lady Liberators together before that Ben, Herc, and Clint will just have to do. She'd make t-shirts emblazoned with Lady Liberators for all four of them as a joke but pretend to take it REALLY seriously. Let the snark commence! I hear Clint and Ben in my head now asking which ladies need liberating and Jen cracking up while pretending to facepalm.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And Herc wouldn't bother cause he'd either be liberating Jen or out looking for the ladies. ; p

And Ben of course would actually where the shirt with pride despite his snark.

Heh heh heh heeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. Aww, Ben and Jen. We need to thread soon. What was Ben's involvement with Rulk? Did he meet the Red Hulk menace at all? Was he involved in any of that? Because I am BEHIND in canon.

[identity profile] wildwld-gadgets.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
(Being lazy and not logging out of Arty's journal. If you haven't read any of the Barfight thread you must! especially the thread with Rachel the animorph; just look for the icon of a bear.)

I avoided the whole thing as it was really confusing to me. I do know Rulk and Ben fought in one issue and of course Ben got pounded and thrown into the Negative Zone only to be rescued by Rulk. I think that was the first hint that Rulk might not just be a jerk.

As for Ben/Jen yes! But I am keeping Ben out of Milliways until maybe issue number 2 of the new FF as I want to give canon a chance to get ahead of me. I would propose an OOM thread wherein Ben calls or meets with Jen to give her the news of Johnny; assuming she isn't told on page that is.

If you want a thread within Milliways, I am running the Ult. Ben Grimm for the next few months at least.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally understand about keeping Ben out of Bar - I'd do the same under the same circumstances. One of the reasons Shulkie hasn't been around is because I'm behind on Red Hulk canon and Jen's involved heavily in that whole clusterfuck (pardon my French).

An OOM sounds perfect for her to get the news. God, she's going to be devastated. Johnny was one of hers, one of the people she'd die for in an instant, one of the people she literally considers family. The FF took her in as family and she'd fight like a lioness to protect any of them.

I don't even know how I'm going to play this out with her. I'll have to think about it.

I know Ben's going to be taking it hard as well. Some choice thoughts which will be spinning in his head, "How can I face Franklin when I allowed his hero to die?" "How can I face Sue?" "If only I hadn't taken that cure." "How could I have been so selfish?"

Pets the Ben.

And take you time. In fact if it hits too close to anything we can hand wave it, even once we start the thread.

[Using Ben's lj for proper icon use.]

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking that once the initial fire is over, Ben and Jen should throw a HUGE party in honor of fun-loving Johnny and invite all of FF friends. I think Johnny'd like that. What do you think?

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a beautiful idea but I think they'd have to rent out a nightclub to really make it in Johnny's honor. Or go club crawling.

BTW for the write up of Johnny's last stand, when I get to it, may I steal the line, "Flame on Mother F_cker" that you have on that icon? Yes I plan on altering the final scene a bit.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
But of course.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it bad that I want their first arc to be capturing or fighting Deadpool?

Err that was a response to the idea for the min.

No. It is not bad at all. It is brilliant.

This mini NEEDS to happen. Who wants to pitch it to Tom Brevoort?

(Not that Marvel would do anything so awesome given their track record of late. But Jen will be bringing Lady Liberators tees to Milliways the first chance that she gets.

Mia falls firmly into the category of believing games are games, thus her speech would be more like this:

"Why bother playing a game if you're not having any fun with it? You'll play better if you enjoy yourselves anyway."

She'd probably be excellent for pee-wee sport pep talks.

Lucas wouldn't have any idea what to do. The thought of talking in front of that many people is making him sweat. He just wants to go outside and play, please.
