doyousmellfudge refers to the fact that in the Warehouse-verse, smelling fudge when there's no fudge around is a sign of Artifact activity at work.

withhistailhigh comes from the Other Father's description of the cat in canon--"all in black, with his tail high."

g00d_d0ggie is self-explanatory.

I didn't know that about Arty's name but I figured it meant caution or alarm somehow.

Kain is

baron_dragoon because he's the commander of the Dragoon Corps of the Kingdom of Baron. (Don't ask about the name; I have my suspicions, but I don't know of any sort of official explanation.)

YW!Felix is

dalzoon because that's his last name, and it's how I think of him. Curiously, he almost never thinks of his last name at all; he's always just Felix to himself. As far as actual meaning is concerned, it's Dutch for "Vale son"

Frederic, now deleted from Milliways but not from my LJLogin list, is

littleboyof5 because that's the first thing I came up with that fit and wasn't taken. It's a line from his canon, when he discovers that, having been born on February 29th, going by birthdays he is as yet only five (and a quarter), rather than the twenty-one that would release him from his apprenticeship to the Pirates. Why no, Gilbert wasn't at all fond of ridiculous situations, why do you ask?

HS!Felix is

obstnatearth because that's a reasonable abbreviation of his "actual" online name, obstinateEarthling.

Spock is

spockambassador because the Spock in my head is in his ambassadorial period, but ambassadorspock was already taken.

Rose is

tt_lalonde because that's the abbreviation of her chumhandle, followed by her last name. It seemed an obvious choice for a username, so I was surprised that nobody had taken it.

Felix is

venusadept_2 because he is the second Venus Adept your party gets. Unless of course you play the games out of order. Curiously, for all that I like username patterns, his doesn't fit with either

valehero, who was here when I made the account, or

windy_karis, who was accepted here this weekend.

Karis is

windy_karis because, even in the first gameplay videos, it was blatantly obvious that she was a Jupiter Adept - associated with wind. I actually had my eye on that username for several months before I did anything with it, among other reasons because I wanted to get the game before even trying to RP her. (Curiously, most of the assumptions I made about her personality beforehand, for a fic that hasn't so far been written, are pretty close to accurate.) As it happens, she's not as "windy" as Felix is "earthy", but the name still works.

Oh, right, and me. I'm

kd7sov because that's a unique identifier. Unless someone gets into random (or sequential) letter-number sequences, there's pretty much never going to be anyone else identifying themselves as kd7sov. It's an amateur radio callsign, officially, but I use it much more for internet stuff than for radio stuff.

Let's see.

saphiras_rider is Eragon's and that should be pretty obvious, Eragon is Saphira the dragon's rider. A simple name for a simple boy.

dog_of_mishap is Vext. Vext is the god of mishap and misfortune so of course his username has to get it wrong. You know how it is, he typed in 'god' but ended up getting 'dog' and by the time he realized it the LJ was already created and for some reason LJ doesn't let him change the name or make a new one. *sigh!*

thinksincurves is a bit more subtle. Araris/Fade in one point in the first book says, in regards to an opponent that he always thinks in straight lines, while he -Fade- thought in curves. The sentence sort of struck and stuck with me as it sort of summed up the character rather nicely.

forgottenmotley is the Fool. He wears motley and is part of a group of archetypal character manifestations which call themselves the Forgotten.

When I first got into the Internet with things like GASP email, I decided that I didn't want a MyNameHere@emailcompany sort of email address. At the time we had a parakeet named Yom Kippur, or Kippur for short, so I took that. Since then I've generally used "Kippur" or "Kippurbird" as my internet handle so why should my LJ name be any different?

Why did you have a parakeet named Yom Kippur?

mogget_cat: Because he was still Mogget when I brought him in, and the lj name "mogget" was taken. Mogget itself is a semi-portmanteau word. A "moggy" is an old cat of indeterminate origin or breed. "-et" is a suffix meaning little. So, Mogget, a little old cat of mysterious origin. ^_^

ostro_goth: Teja is an Ostrogoth, and he's gothy (in the modern sense), that's why the seemingly uncalled-for underscore.

Urquhart --

scots_wolf: Urq is Scottish, and associated with wolves in his canon. That's what actually sold me on the book: - the very medieval characterisation of Urq and Jacob as wolf vs. fox, as in the fables of Aesop and their manifold contemporary retellings. As a former student of medieval Latin, having read the Ecbasis Captivi at university, I very much appreciated that way of handling characters and could forgive the pumpkins. Of course Urq had to have the wolf thing in his user name!

Tower --

destroy_restart: that's the current modern interpretation of what the card means.

Donovan --

born_to_it: from a line of his canon. Anita, the unbearably sue-ish and annoying protagonist, asks whether swanmanes happen by infection through bites, like most other weres, and Donovan answers no, they're born to it. And he, in addition to that, is born to being the Swan King, which he doesn't really want all that much, so that had to be his user name.

Margolotta --

margolotta: duh! It's her name. The journal is so old, not all names of fictional characters were taken back then.

Ma'at --

ancient_justice: she's the embodiment of the oldest abstract concept of justice and order in the history of human thought, and she's from Ancient Egypt. I once used to have a rather more fictional Ancient Egyptian vampire charrie, Khayman from the Vampire Chronicles (

ancient_servant), and there was a historical novel about Ramses that rather impressed me in my impressionable teens, 'Ancient Evenings' by Norman Mailer; so caling Egyptian pups ancient_[something] makes some sort of connotative sense to me.

Bridgette Dubois --

middle_dubois: she's the middle daughter of Allison Dubois. In my else!game, when it was still one journal per pup on the long-defunct GreatestJournal, I used to have a character that was the middle son of the bad guy, with the user name middle_temminck (that was the one with James MacAvoy as PB), so calling her middle_[something] again made some nonlinear sort of sense to me.

Sirona --

source_fairy: with weird fantasy getups and meddling in artificial virtual fairy game worlds/LARPs, she hides the fact that she is a very real actual goddess. A goddess of hot springs (sources, in French), actually; and as a computer programmer, she produces source code. So.

olyabird is the informal name for Olga, who was imprisoned in the form of an owl for many centuries.

justcallmefee for Fiona, is self-explanatory. It was one of my first rp journal names. It really should be something like triggerhappyex or something.

riversinger is River Song. Another early rp journal name. If I could rename, it'd be checkyourrecords.

particularskill for Mills, refers to a quote from his canon: "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

vojvode is Dracula, and is an alternate spelling of Voivode, "One who leads men." Often translated as "prince", "duke" or "count". It speaks to both his birthright and his history as a general and protector of his lands.

longtonguedog is Earl's name. After a canon reference to a dog that Grace keeps seeing. (Who may or may not be God. Or an angel. It's never really specified.)

hello_freak is Sherlock Holmes, BBC flavour, and refers to how Sherlock is addressed by a SOCO in "A Study In Pink."

lady_bols is Alex Drake, and is one of Gene Hunt's nicknames for her. From their very first meeting, he calls her "Bollinger Knickers". (Also, Bolly Kecks, Bolly, Bols, Lady Bols, Missus Woman, Madam Fruitcake, etc.)

Bah. My first RP account user name was

alec_troven for a guy named... Alec Troven. Other journal accounts tend to go under element_wizard now.

Choosing an rp journal name is one of the biggest challenges, I think. When I see a particularly apt one, I always cheer. It's like picking the right hat, y'know? Sometimes when it works, it really works.

Especially once you realize you don't have to use their names!

will_scarlett is his name. I didn't realize until my later pups that character handles could mean things. I'm still amazed no one had this name.

Demeter-

wheatencrown One of the symbols of Demeter is a crown of wheat so that's fairly obvious.

Sameth-

makesthings is from a quote in canon where he says the only thing he's good at is making things. I had to change it a little for a username.

morethanprops He's a conman and what makes him good is his sincerity which is more than his props. It wasn't my first choice of username but it works.

William Evans-

not_his_pa He spends most of canon defining himself against his father so this one was also fairly simple.

Jane Austen-

jane_becomes The movie she's from is called Becoming Jane and this was the variation on it that was free. I like it since in the movie she becomes the Jane Austen of history.

friend_of_lucy Chat helped to create this one and I love it since it sums up how Tumnus defines himself.

The Pirate King-

ceitfianna came from the fact that ceit is Kate in Scot's Gaelic, one of the few languages that has plain Kate has a name and then Fianna is my love of Celtic stuff showing. The Fianna were fabled Irish warriors and its also the name of a werewolf tribe, its a silly reason to have a name but I've grown to really like it.

I once did a mirror plot for Will, it was rather strange and hard.

acts_of_gord- I was stuck for a user name for Gordon and realized I'd been reading a website called Acts of Gord, about a particularly no-nonsense video game retailer in Canada. I figured it was as good a name as any for Gordon's journal.

remindmeof_me- The G-man tells Adrian Shephard towards the end of Half-Life: Opposing Force that he likes people who survive and adapt to changing, challenging situations. "They remind me of myself." I couldn't fit that into a journal name, so- remindmeof_me.

aaaaaaaagh_sky- My first Fallout playthrough, the one that I based Ellen on, I realized I was playing someone who had never been more than about five steps away from a wall or twenty or so feet from a ceiling in her entire life. She'd be agoraphobic as hell under the circumstances. I would periodically stop in the middle of the Wasteland and point the camera skyward and spin the joystick around and scream "AAAAAAAAAAGH!" because, well, badly agoraphobic teenager. It was an easy step up.

alorn_bear- Belar is Bear God of the Alorn people of his world.

hands_of_blu- Medic works for Builders League United (BLU) and is one creepy amoral SOB who wears big blue rubber gloves to do awful things. And I watch Firefly. Hands of blue, anybody?

pattersongs- Canonically, Mordin has performed Gilbert and Sullivan in the past- "patter songs, mostly"- and all the good usernames related to his singing "I Am The Very Model Of A Scientist Salarian" were already taken.

stealth_bandage- Arcade Gannon will comment that his covert bandaging skills are a little rusty if you go into sneak mode with him as a follower. I remembered the quote wrong.

calmhrtprevails- One of the things Fawkes may say if you're idle in an area with him as your follower is, "In all things, a calm heart must prevail."

Enzo's main catchphrase in canon is "Alphanumeric!" meaning, for some peculiar reason, "awesome". alphanumericenzo was too long and looks kind of awful anyway, and just plain alphanumeric was taken. So, a1 = alphanumeric.

I always read it as AL-enzo, which is kinda like allons y!, or at least that's how my brain interprets it.

/doctor who geek

In alphabetical order:

aberranteyes is a documented mutation of the Nova Age; I picked that name for the journal back when it was going to be devoted primarily to viewing Aberrant's skewed world, rather than providing my skewed view on the world outside my window.

good_or_awesome refers back to the very first Sbemail, and to Strong Bad asking if Abdi LaRue has any superpowers, and if so, for which of those does he use them?

ilko_skevuld is also a Sbemail reference, the name on The Cheat's fake ID, which I picked up as a journal name because I couldn't believe people were just letting it lie fallow.

katana_hacker refers to Hiro's skills with the sword and the computer.

last_master refers to Obi-Wan's status as the Master to the apprentice who destroyed the Jedi Order, and then to the one who restored it.

md_donighal is Michael's first and middle initials followed by his surname. Alternatively, the "MD" could be as in "Dr. Primoris" (his Inspiration Age alias).

ringo2omoshiro puns on Ryûk's love of apples (ringo in Japanese) and his catchphrase Ningen-to omoshiro! (Englished by Viz as "Humans are fun"!)

rotwood_reaper refers to a chapter title page (specifically Chapter 6, "Blinda Blinda" aka "Don't Say to Your Sister") where Rukia's name was translated as "Rukia Rotwood" (her family name, Kuchiki, is written with kanji that mean "rotten wood").

slidingjennifer refers to la Landers' first name and her "Slider" callsign; it's also a sideways reference to Jenny Sparks and her adventures in Sliding Albion.

I thought I was being really clever with Rachel's -

amazonofthe21st - despite its length, and I still really like it. Rachel had a few nicknames in the series, the most notable being Xena: Warrior Princess, but was often described by her friends and allies as a soldier, a Viking, and an Amazon. Out of all those options, Amazon always struck me as particularly appropriate.

I've had this journal for a couple of years now, though, and I have to admit, it didn't occur to me that Rachel is from the twentieth century, not the twenty-first until sometime very early this year. Oh well.

My personal LJ handle is easier:

trelali. When I was a little kid, I weirded out everyone around me by finding, devouring, and memorizing Greek mythology. "Trela" is Greek for "insanity." Li is me.

longlonghair Meh. Rapunzel and many of its variations were taken, so this was a last ditch at "That name is already taken, try again."

bringer_of_fun Bobby's is from a quote in his canon. The gang got into a fight and broke a kids' playground. The kids were sad,and it was going to take weeks for a new playground to be put in, so Bobby said, "Step aside lame ones, let the bringer of fun take care of this!" and made a whole playground out of ice and snow.

steamgenius KK's username is because she's a genius with steam engineering.

Huh. My usernames tend to be boring and predictable. Ah well.

gammagammahey is an obvious play on the Ramones song. I just substituted "gammagamma" for "gabbagabba." It seems to fit She-Hulk's high energy personality. When I came up with the user name years ago, I didn't realize that her letter column in Dan Slott's run on the Shulkie book was called "Gamma gamma hey." It was serendipity.

accipiterpuella is just Hawkgirl in Latin. I wanted something that connoted oldness and the ancient world, but didn't know the what a Hawkgirl would be called during the reign of Ramesses the Great.

lockjawed is a play on Lockjaw's name. It also refers to his tenacity and stubbornness.

waxwontbeenough refers to the sirens of Greek mythology. It was thought putting wax in your ears would prevent one from hearing their deadly song, but with Siryn that's not quite enough because she's LOUD.

mamba_with_me was just s playful take on Black Mamba's ability to function in a highly dangerous lifestyle. She sees it as a dance.

I've always loved all you pup's LJ names but especially Jen's. I do wonder which came first, your LJ or the letter column.

minkhollow: By the time I got to LJ, I figured any non-number version of Cimorene (my online handle at the time) would be taken. So I cast about for a good name and there was a freshly-purchased CD copy of Hermit of Mink Hollow sitting on the desk, and I can always get behind a good Todd Rundgren reference. (Incidentally, this is why my MM journal is

abar_starclog: Carl wouldn't give me anything else to work with, so I stuck his name in an anagram generator to see what I could see.

snap_time: Canon reference. One of Larry's many failed business ventures before he got the museum job.

kemo_soggy: So when I had Mom watch Dr. Horrible, Dad and I were in the next room, and he heard "Need anything made soggy?" as 'kemo-soggy.' So I ran with it.

aintno_disco: Talking Heads reference. I called the fic where I wrote up Conflict Diamond's backstory as I see it "Life During Wartime," and the theme stuck.

doesnotmiss: In canon, people call Sam 'the blade that never misses'; it's very rare that he misses his intended target, but even if he does, he'll hit something. But all reasonable versions of never_misses were gone, so.

claudiometer: "Oh no no no no, you do NOT shut down the Claudiometer!" Deferred to canon on that one.

uppersandowners: While the name is a reference to a song by the Who ('uppers and downers, either way, blood flows'), it was my automatic first thought for a journal for Beverly, what with her purveying of goods for St Trinian's.

Aintno_disco is a great name, and it totally triggers that earworm for me. So it's kinda like a soundtrack for your pup! :D

I always think of the Sheryl Crow song whenever I see the username, myself.

And that would be why I've considered changing it ('whotookthemoney,' probably, since it's a somewhat stronger stand-alone Talking Heads reference). But the one she has now also seems to be popular, so!

nitro_is_ace: My first RP journal here, I was also under the impression it had to contain the pup's name, but this does sum up her feelings for all things boom.

katyafeline: I'll admit to mimicking Flynn's name for Olga, her canonmate, on purpose. :D Katya is the familiar version of her name - Yekaterina, and she can shift into a tiger. As some pups have found out. :D

_romana_: This one is an adopted name - assuming I can ever stop being a slacker and play her enough to warrant re-naming her, it should be something more like 'preferredfred' or 'wandererintime'

properpolice: Shaz has a deep and abiding longing to be involved in proper police work, not just this pseudo-receptionist-tea girl business she seems stuck in.

gondolin_noble: One of the (more minor) debates in Tolkien lore is whether the two Glorfindels mentioned are the same Glorfindel or different ones - one was a noble elf of Gondolin who got himself toasted to a crisp defending the fleeing refugees of a sacked Gondolin, the other was the elf who rescued Frodo from the Nazgul (and was totally and unfairly replaced by Arwen in the movies. Or, in the older animated version, by Legolas. Whut). Some things the Professor wrote suggests that they are (at least, in his head-canon) the same elf. There's a similar debate about Legolas, but they tend to get more definitively separated into two elves.

777thdegree: "I am Balthazar Blake, sorcerer of the 777th degree, and you are my apprentice." That, and 'oldmanshoes' was taken, alas. :D

notabricklayer: One of the more famous in the constant litany of 'I'm a doctor, not a ________!" lines Bones is fond of throwing at anyone who bothers to listen. Honestly, the number of jobs he's asked to complete, it's a wonder he has any time for medicine!

nameonthedoor: Lightman is (honestly) proud of the fact that his research and persistence has lead to being able to be (mostly) his own boss, and do what he likes, and people pay him to do it. When people get persnickety at him, he just points out who's name is on the door - since it's the Lightman Group, it's not likely to be theirs. This argument does not work against his daughter. Ever.

no_saber: Laranth is notable in her canon as being one of the few Jedi who go about without a lightsaber on purpose - a decided benefit in her time period, right after the Order was effectively slaughtered. If only certain other canonmates would cotton on to the intelligence of this... though, to be honest, the particular canonmate in question spends less time being captured and tortured than she does. >.>

cameoflage: I've been going by Cameo for about six years (I picked it out of the "word name" section of a name book) and I made up "cameoflage" as a pun on that for when I needed a different username. I used it instead of the similar "cameoappearance" because I link my usernames with specific passwords and this is the one associated with an alphanumeric password.

creepyandweird: When I first came up with him, he had zero social skills and acted creepy and weird. The specific phrasing was from a completely unrelated El Goonish Shive quote that happened to spring to mind. He doesn't even act creepy and weird anymore, just detached, but meh, it works okay.

hey35nholding - From the season 3 episode where she's kicked off the force and becomes a "Babylon Sister" for Steely Dan. At the height of her groupiedom, she said the following:
