Oops - I started this and then promptly forgot about it. A summary from last Saturday's Night of the Cordial Discussion with Teh Evil Rider:

Tom being all wibbly about whatever Door is trying to avoid talking to him about. Snow gives him excellent advice on assuming more of his role as Lord of the House Arch. And on that note, Door-mun is running into crazy busy life complications right now, so the Tom/Door plotting is on hold for a while. When Tom is in, assume that things are about the same until we both have time and energy to go forward. :)

Then Anakin comes over, noticing Tom's gloomy mood. Tom mentions the Rider, who he sees speaking with Yrael, and speak of the devil! Aphelise joins them. He and Tom, who goes all Slytherin and charming with the skills acquired over years of being wicked tricksy false, discuss books, and the specialness of Milliways. Anakin is restrained and being very good as he joins in.

Yrael also comes by to watch in his amused, detached way. The more the merrier seems to be the theme, and Aphelise discusses the infinite possibilities Milliways provides. Tom asks about the Rider's world, and then Peter joins the cordial fray. Anakin is relieved to see him, Yrael continues to watch, and Tom welcomes him to the table, clearly enjoying the verbal battle. I mean, cordial conversation.

Tom asks if Aphelise has heard of Voldemort since they both seem to be from England and Aphelise was there in the 1970's. He had not, but would have loved to have given V. some advice. This makes Peter testy on Tom's behalf. It makes Anakin very nervous. Tom just laughs and reminds Aphelise that he is not that person. Peter asks Aphelise where his taint comes from, and Yrael responds with a zinger.

The Rider is very proud of his taint, thanks very much! Tom turns serious and reasserts that he will overcome the darkness within him. Peter becomes furious and likens Aphelise to a black hole. Aphelise thanks Peter for the flattery and snidely comments that "you are used to buttering up your superiors." He also reminds Tom that many men try and fail to do what he so wishes to achieve. Anakin reasserts that they are all in this together, and Tom mentions that his nightmares keep him surprisingly on his toes, to that end. Aphelise gets snippy and sibilant, leading Tom to ask if he is, by chance, a Parselmouth. To lighten the mood, and all.

Especially since Peter challenges Aphelise's comments again. Tom gets a little distracted by the whole Parselmouth thing, because that's Tom for you! He says that snakes are misunderstood creatures, Aphelise agrees, and hey presto! They've found common ground not revolving around debate regarding Light and Dark! Infinite possibilities, indeed.

Aphelise and Peter continue to wage verbal war, and then Moiraine brings her serenity to the mix. Tom is very polite in a 1954 kind of way, and pulls out her chair for her. Peter, Anakin, and Tom then hover over her making sure she's comfortable. Because they are all gentlemen and stuff.

The Rider coldly greets her. Tom oh so politely inquires if Aphelise can't return to his world. This rattles Aphelise just the tiniest bit, but he remains snarky.

Aphelise: "I believe Confucius was correct when he stated that, 'Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising each time we fall.'
Anakin: "Yes. Which is why every time we return to the Light, we win a greater victory over the Dark."
Yrael: *Yrael grins at the quote the Rider made* Rising each time you fall only to fall once more, or to continue on to brighter heights, depending. One cannot rise from a fall without others to help them.
Too bad you are here alone, Aphelise.

Ouch!

Moiraine points out that Aphelise might feel lost which makes the Rider wince. Tom and Peter continue to wear him down until the Rider flees goes upstairs to plot their demise.

Everyone is relieved by his exit. Tom assures Moiraine that he was only intending to talk with the Rider - he wasn't being careful not to lose his head. Moiraine is glad to hear this after their last chat in which she told Tom to not be an idiot. But in much calmer, more serene terms. Moraine also reminds all and sundry that they are not entirely powerless against Aphelise, but all must be careful of his deceptions. Tom stubbornly declares Aphelise won't trick him. Moiraine points out that Aphelise has used others to get to people, and Tom's arrogance fades nice and fast as he knows he can't keep Door and Ingress a secret from Aphelise forever.

Peter, Moiraine, and Tom discuss fear, bravery, and how they will overcome the challenge the Rider presents. Then Tom-mun konks out cos it's freaking 3:30 in the morning and that is officially too late!

It was a very fun conversation, and I apologize for being so tardy in summarizing it.
