Daily Entertainment.

OH MY GOD LJ IS ACTUALLY LETTING ME POST A DE.

What canons have you wanted to get into but you just can't seem to find the time? This was Fringe for me for a while, but now I'm on 3.08 and holy crap.

It WAS Buffy for me. Now it's Fringe, Bones, Leverage and White Collar.

I've been meaning to check it out 'cause it looks like fun, but I've never managed to find the time for organized watching.

Merlin, Game of Thrones and The Event all spring to mind. House was one but my wife got into it in a big way and dragged me along.

Merlin is fun and its all streaming on Netflix. I got hooked watching it when SyFy started playing it on Friday nights for a while. I still haven't seen the very first episodes but I've watched all of the second and third seasons and the second half of the first season.

I swear some broadcast station had picked it up also. Like NBC or something. I need to redo my Tivo search.

I love King Arthur despite, or perhaps due to, it being so over done. There are just so many variations on it and that's just within the past fifty years. I can't imagine the variations from the Medieval and Renaissance.

My favorite version of the Arthurian myths is T.H. White's Once and Future King so I tend to not be terribly picky. Merlin's a fun show that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm not terribly invested so I love seeing how people play with it.

When it comes to Robin Hood, I'm picky and didn't enjoy BBC's Robin Hood even though the two shows are rather alike in terms of how they treat the myths. Its just one of them is my myth and I get odd about it. So I tend to be more cautious about variations on it.

This is slightly rambly, let me show you my weird id on mythology.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That rant above would be mine for First Knight. As much fun as it was seeing Sean Connery as King Arthur...no. = ]

And actually T.S. White's books were my first exposure to the mythos if I remember right. I should reread them.

I'm like that for Prince of Thieves, that movie makes me twitch.

With the BBC's Robin Hood, I could see why they made the choices they did and the people who've played characters from that show in Milliways have done amazing things. It just really doesn't fit with the version of Robin Hood in my head.

Remind me at some point to share with you the paper I wrote about Robin Hood illustrations as it lays out a lot of what clicks for me about the myth. It wasn't quite the paper I was meant to write but I wanted to write it.

Sounds good. I also just remembered Mary Stewart's Merlin books as well. I especially loved The Wicked Day for the more honest look at Mordred.

Did you ever see Princess of Thieves (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272790/)? I'm curious as to whether it's worth watching.

No, I didn't. I tend to avoid Robin Hood adaptations unless someone tells me that its good and I'll like it.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. I came across it while looking for Thalia PBs and it looks interesting in a what may have happened after Robin Hood sort of way.

With all this talk I'm feeling nostalgic for the old Arthurian books.

Funny but at this point, it's more canons everyone else thinks I should be getting into. I am about where I want to be now, all caught in time for a few new TV shows that sound promising and a lot of comics that may or may not be good.

Will admit that I am not through all the Dresden Files books yet, but I feel like I can take my time with them.

Word to Fringe. I started watching when it premiered (uh, all thanks to Joshua Jackson, I will not pretend to lie), and was hella intrigued. A few weeks in, I got distracted by some life crap, and neglected to pick it up again; instead, I mainlined all seven seasons of Buffy for the first time.

I should remedy this!

That last episode of Fringe was.... I won't tell.

Anyway, there probably are, actually I've been missing a lot of Warehouse 13, Eureka, and stuff. But I Have been catching Haven. Wow!

And a few weeks off will be nice.

[personal profile] alchemistseraph 2011-08-01 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now it's everything. White Collar and Leverage look interesting to keep up with, but I don't have the time and inclination at the same time, it seems lately. Half the time I end up reading the episode summaries and calling it even.

Thirded, fourthed, or whatever on Fringe. Also I would say Bones but that is episodic enough that catching an episode or rerun once in a while is good enough for me. As for shows I wish I could watch but never get the chance to: MLP:FiM, Haruhi, Avatar:TLA, and Adventure Time.

And BOOKS. I miss reading BOOKS. But BOOKS put me to sleep. Stupid brain.

And speaking of Avatar, I hear Legend of Korra is an actual thing? Not just a fan thing?

Of shows that have been around a while: Warehouse 13, Eureka, Being Human, Life on Mars, and Ashes to Ashes are all on my To Be Watched list. I'm also falling behind on the new season of True Blood.

Of new shows just starting: Alphas, Misfits, and Falling Skies.

These be the things I'm attempting to work my way through:

TV
- Star Trek: Next Gen
- Franklin & Bash
- Supernatural (I'm still somewhere in season one.)
- X-Files (gosh, somewhere in season two, maybe?)

Comics
- Lucifer
- 100 Bullets

I'm pretty caught up on everything else.

I kind of quit watching Supernatural after season 4. I bought season 5 last Christmas because it was a great price, but it's still in shrink wrap on my shelf, waiting to be watched.

I don't really watch TV anymore, so I don't really know what's out there.

Ah! Supernatural! I keep intending to watch that, but I don't. Why do TV networks have to put their best shows on at the same time? Its like they like competing for viewers! Why can't they just share our eyeballs?

I forget what else comes on at that timeslot, as I hardly watch TV either. But something does!

I think one of the reasons I quit watching TV (besides the massive amounts of CRAP they make you wade through) is because I could never remember when stuff was on--days, times, whatever. I can barely remember what I had for dinner yesterday, so I can't really expect to remember to watch a specific show from week to week.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2011-08-01 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've gotten into a few books because of Milliways but no TV canons. Whatever au courant TV canons there are at Milliways I'm either already meaning to watch, have/am watched/watching, or can't watch due to lack of cable and other methods.

I have the first two discs of season 1 of Justified sitting on my bookshelf to watch and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I started but my time disappeared on me.

I'm hoping now that I won't have classes that I can actually do things for fun.

I seem to have trouble with streaming sites for Warehouse 13. Or I did when I was actively looking for them, a while back. But anything that takes twice as long to get to as to watch is not going to be a high priority of mine, no matter how much I enjoy it when I can watch it.

The rest of Fringe.

Warehouse 13.

... I'm sure there's something else I should add to that list.

Right now I am enchanted by Falling Skies. OMG THAT SHOW IS AMAZING.
