The first frost has appeared in Michigan and my walk to work was cold.

How does your pups' body temperature work? I know there are some people who no matter the weather are always cold or hot.

If they're of another species, how does that effect them? Is that same temperature change reflected when other people touch them?

Urquhart doesn't really mind, but Teja gets cold easily and wears warm things in winter because he lived in a warm country, and all this rain and cold is not what he is used to...

He likes the fireplace in winter, the forge fire, hot mulled wine, and cats warming him.

In that case, I will totally tag it with Urquhart, if that EP happens before my mum arrives.

Back to basics...

And I could do a cold weather post with Teja and Tamara both, on Sunday.

If it's this weekend, I might tag it after my mum is gone.

Sprites are made of energy; it would be silly of them to radiate it. So they have no body heat, but they can be affected by ambient temperature and process faster when it's colder. (Rather like Discworld trolls, but the effects are less extreme, and it's more an issue of alertness and clearheadedness than actual intelligence.)

When he's human, Enzo tends to the warm (he sweats a lot), so he still prefers cooler temperatures. Unlike his sprite self, however, there are limits.

[personal profile] a1enzo 2011-10-28 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Precisely. Basically, a bit of warmth is relaxing, just as it is for humans (which might explain the popularity of Cocoa among sprites), but if he sits by the fire for too long, he effectively gets drunk. (Fortunately, though, he sobers up as soon as he cools down, and there's no hangover.)

Also, sprites have weaker thermoception than humans. They can feel temperature differences, just not as acutely as we do.

Sunshine is regular human-warm, but in preference is aaaaallll about the summer. Her days are blazing and hot, and she enjoys having a greater tolerance for heat than most people (she's fine in the bakery in high summer with the ovens going full-blast, for example, whereas most of the other people in the kitchens at the coffeehouse have to take breaks out by the fans with cups of water). She doesn't like the cold.

Mogget is always a bit warmer than what he's shaped like should be. He radiates warmth, even when it's freezing outside. He prefers summer, but also enjoys the excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace in winter (as though he needs an excuse).

Zelgadiss, in contrast, is always cool ^_^. Side-effect of being a stone-skinned chimera.

Both Ben's have no trouble with temperature, either extreme. In fact I'm not even sure if they would notice for themselves and likely can only tell by how others react to the weather.

Val, Jessica, and Julie are all meta-humans and I feel have a higher metabolism so likely tend to run hot. They likely can take colder temperatures okay but hot weather doesn't suit them. Well, Julie likely isn't bothered by hot or cold extremes. Val and Jess prefer summer and I think Julie likes Spring best.

Thalia, Artemus and Rincewind all feel the effects of cold or heat. Thalia loves Spring and Fall with their rainy weather while Rincewind and Arty prefer Summer I guess.

Dan is dead, so he runs a step cooler than normal baseline human.

Skellig tends towards the higher temp that birds have, so he's warmer than a normal human but he's very easily influenced by outside temperatures, and hates being cold (even though he lives in a cold winter climate right now). Sunshine is a good thing!

Doc and Carl are both baseline humans; Carl has an ability to function better across the spectrum than Doc does, and while cold doesn't bother either of them at all, I think Doc handles intense heat better while Carl can handle extreme cold better. (Carl can also adjust his own body temperature thanks to Delta training!)

Jake is nothing extraordinary, normal human.

And Hex is...well, Hex. He's messed up and bitchy, and from what he tells me, he doesn't like the cold at all. And despite being half-dead, he's not colder or anything.

Hm. Well, physically, Amascut is human (or mimics being human very well). Given her ability to use certain magics without using external energy storage or even a wand or staff she might be slightly warmer than usual.

I imagine she likes the heat. Part of that is the long time she spent as her then favorite critter, a cat (irony is funny! HAHA!), and part of it is being a desert dweller. She has a love/hate relationship with the sun/Daddy, though.

She knows how to stay cool, though. Given how old the Menaphite Civilization is, she has probably observed plenty engineering projects aimed at keeping things cool via passive solar, wind power, and underground water channels. I am thinking of things such as كاهریز and یخچال. Though she probably has learned most of it by destroying such structures. Also, there is also the cave/dungeon which most likely serves as her base of operations. It is likely quite cool in there. Smoky and hazy as heck, though.
death_gone_mad: Shhh (Default)

[personal profile] death_gone_mad 2011-10-28 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
On second thought, that smoke and haze has a source and probably contributes significantly to the temperature and heat retention down there. So not cool at all.

Hot and sweaty, then.

<.< dammit, now I am thinking in double entendre

Most of my pups are human or human-like. Teyla likes warm weather because all the planets in Pegasus seem to run that way (or else rainy). Lorne is a summer person, though I'd guess that he's gotten rather used to winter after having been stationed in Colorado for a while. Pos, I think, likes rainy weather. It fits his mood and general melancholia.

Nikola runs a bit cold, not enough that you'd think he were dead, just enough that he seems like he might have poor circulation. As a result, it has to be quite cold for him to feel cold, though he does appreciate leeching warmth from not'cats people.

Alcide runs hot as all Weres do, kind of like he's got a fever. I'd guess this means he doesn't particularly like the cold when he's not in wolf-form, though as it doesn't get particularly cold in Shreveport, it's not really an issue. He's going to have a blast when it starts snowing in the bar, just from the novelty of it.

I have no idea about Hatter, though I suspect he likes it warm and dry. He never really complains without ulterior motives, though, so it's hard to tell how he really feels about things like this.
skidmo: (alcide)

[personal profile] skidmo 2011-10-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I hadn't thought of that, but I wouldn't guess so. People who run hot tend to feel the cold more than people who don't, so if anything, it'd be a reason for him to button his shirts more often.

I suspect the reason he never buttons his shirts is a) an attempt to make him seem more casual and b) because Joe Mangianello is incredibly fit.

So with the wine, the charm and the warmth, Nikola is a lush, a lech and a leech. ^___^ Yrael approves.

(Though Sunshine wants to reference the actual blood-sucking variety of leeches, as well.)

[personal profile] skidmo 2011-10-28 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can think is that there has to be some sort of physicsy reason for it. It's a fairly symmetrical weapon, after all. Maybe it couldn't be made only working out of one end?

I don't know. Plot hole. I'm less annoyed about it since they fixed him back.

River's pretty normal, I think? I dunno; she lives on a climate-controlled spaceship, and wears pretty summery outfits there, even when her crewmates are wearing slightly more in the way of layers. But a bit of canon and a lot of Millicanon has her tending to underdress for cold weather, even in the mock-Scottish winter. I'm honestly not sure if she tends to get less cold than most, or just not notice it.

I've never thought about it with Regan, but I'm going to declare that she tends to feel the cold, and dislike it. But she's got a wardrobe full of clothing arranged to be stylish and surreptitiously warm, so.

Trowa also runs pretty normal. But he strongly dislikes being cold, for reasons of backstory, so he tends to dress a little warmer than he strictly needs to. When he's not in clown pants performance clothing, anyway.

Piotr runs warm. He's a big dude with a lot of muscles! Also: he grew up in Siberia. Also also: either those costumes have a lot more insulation than they appear to (which they may well), or he's fine with running around scantily clad in spandex in all weathers. Anyway, yeah, canonically Piotr has a huge tolerance for cold, and I have always figured that he's one of those people with perpetually warm hands and stuff. (When he's metal, he doesn't really feel temperatures. Like, if he's in extremes of heat or cold, he can tell, but he doesn't feel it the same way he would as flesh. Which is good, given that he's had occasion to go "Okay, I just walked through a lot of fire, please don't touch me till I cool down enough to not burn you" to his friends before.)

Lan, I have no idea if he runs cold or hot. But it doesn't hugely matter, because he grew up learning a meditative discipline for ignoring extremes of temperature anyway. And also grew up in a place with frigid winters, and a sickly tropical Blight next door. He canonically doesn't bother to close his cloak when everyone around is huddling in theirs, or to take off said cloak in the middle of a desert, so... yes.
river_meimei: (storytelling smile)

[personal profile] river_meimei 2011-10-29 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
He DOES. *laughing* He at least does have company in this -- so do all the Aes Sedai, and other Warders, and presumably a significant number of adult Borderlanders, since there's no indication that Lan considers his upbringing unusual in that respect. (Unusual in other respects, yes, and kind of accelerated, but there's no indication that the ko'di meditation thing is something that's not learned by other people expected to grow up to be warriors.)

And I love all the varied versions of comic book physics that mutants live with. So entertainingly ridiculous!

[identity profile] viridian.livejournal.com 2011-10-30 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Laaaaaate to the party but I've actually thought about this for one of mine, so:

Regarding external temperature, Illyria feels it but is relatively unbothered by it, as she can regulate her own temperature just fine. Her own natural temperature is relatively close to a human's, except that unless she's trying to appear human, her skin actually feels cooler to the touch. Unless she's been hurt, in which case she feels very warm as she expends energy to fix herself. And she has a mild personal preference for warm things because she's used to cold and finds it boring.

Clem runs to the average side, as does Jules; Dixie tends to be a trifle bit warmer.
