Let's keep it simple today. What's everyone reading today?

What movies are you looking forward to either seeing in the theater or watching on DVD?

With my newest paycheck, I plan on seeing The Three Musketeers and buying a copy of X-Men: First Class.

For a possible pup question, what kinds of books or movies do your pups like to curl up with a cold night?

I'm kind of terrible about going to see movies, or even watching them on my computer. The next movie I'll watch is probably Sakura Wars, which I bought at Dragon*Con. (It took me something like three or four weeks just to get around to taking the plastic wrap off.)

Gene loves Westerns. Like, obsessively so. The phrase 'glorious genre of the American West' might have been used in canon, and he refers to himself, always, as the Sheriff. So, yeah. Westerns or nothing, pretty much, though I imagine he can be persuaded to watch cop movies too.

As for reading - ahahaha. He did used to read a bit, when he was a kid. He rarely does now, and would never own to it even if he did.

As for me, I dream of the days where I can go to the cinema all the time like I used to. I'm looking forward to the last Harry Potter film coming out on Blu-Ray; I'll snap that up (particularly as all HP DVDs are being removed from circulation on Dec 29th, apparantly), and then watch the final two back-to-back. I've had the other one since it came out, and haven't managed to watch it yet.

Also, I have pterry's new book (EEE VIMES), but haven't found time to start it yet. V. much looking forward to that.

I'm in the middle of my once-a-decade reread of Lord of the Rings. I've just finished the battle of Helm's Deep. ^_^ Surprisingly, I'm enjoying the Two Towers a lot more than I have in the past - I think the movies helped with that. My last reread of the books was in early 2001, in preparation for the movies coming out.

I went to see The Three Musketeers with friends from work, last week. I kind of want my money back. It was... well, the fight scenes were enjoyable. The rest was a mess of preachy dialog, unlikeable characters (apart from Orlando Bloom, who is enjoying his first role as a villain a bit too much), sexist generalizations and blatant fanservice. Oh, and the repeated defiance of physics really irked me. Because dude. That ship's cannon is solid iron and weighs 1,200 pounds at the very least. There is no way that one guy can lift it up and over the ship's railing to throw it overboard.

Here's Howard Tayler's review of The Three Musketeers. You may not (okay, won't) agree with what he has to say, I just like how he says it.

Awww, that's a shame, Saph, I utterly adored the movie.

I'm rereading The Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis. The first time I read it, years ago, I enjoyed it; now, having had rather more exposure to detective fiction (of one sort or other) by way of Black Jack Justice and The Dresden Files, I am appreciating it so much more.

As far as what I'm reading, The Hive And The Honey-Bee, by Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth; Predator: The Remote-Control Air War over Iraq and Afghanistan: A Pilot's Story, by Matt J. Martin; and The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen. The last one is notable as being one of the first appearances of a humanoid eldritch abomination in literature and a massive, massive influence on HP Lovecraft's work.

I'm not reading anything at the moment (gasp!), though I did finish The Invention of Hugo Cabret a couple of days ago. DAMN is that book gorgeous. (And surprisingly short, considering it's over 500 pages! But yeah, when over half of those pages are illustrations, that'll do it.)

I suspect the next movie I'll see in theaters is Margin Call, just because the cast makes me go starry-eyed with glee. Mary McDonnell, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, and Jeremy Irons all in the same movie? YES, PLEASE. :D :D :D

My daughter loves that book and I still need to read it. You do know Martin Scorsese is making a movie adaptation yes?

Hnnng. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is for serious one of the prettiest books in existence. I've got Wonderstruck added to my wish list and will totally be mine this Christmas.

Books I am reading and looking forward to reading: The Warlock by Michael Scott (rereading actually), Sunshine by Robin McKinley (yes I'm reading this solely on the Rae that's played here and damn if this isn't a really good book), Dandelion Fire by N.D. Wilson, Troubletwisters by Garth Nix and Sean Williams, and Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

Movies: I still need to see Captain America and X-Men: First Class. Not sure about any other movies as I live under a rock.

TV: Still holding out hope for Terra Nova and am really likely Grimm.

At the moment, I'm rereading The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon. It's making some interesting connections between things I've been thinking about the last few weeks.

Looking... forward to movies? Um... ... ... Well, I watched Into the Woods again the other day. Thanks in part to Crackchat's enabling, Brain is busily trying to cast all the roles with My Little Pony characters, particularly Fluttershy as Cinderella. (Figuring out how to array them all is hard. And the cow is problematic.)

My pups, curiously, aren't much into books or movies. None of their worlds have movies, which may be part of it. But if they were... Felix, I think, would be a secret lover of certain types of romantic movies - not comedies, at least in the Adam Sandler sense, but stuff like the movies of Jane Austen's books. I'm not getting much from the others on this.

Books: About to start PTErry's newest, Snuff. Just finished a very odd but very entertaining PKD book, Lies Inc. Apparently, the middle of the book was rejected in the 60s, added in the 70s, and reworked in the 80s. It shows, but it's a good demonstration of how PKD's work evolves.

Also still reading a lot of the New 52 comics, with varying levels of enthusiasm. Am madly loving Batman, The Flash, Batgirl, Batman and Robin and Batwing - see a theme emerging? Still liking Demon Knights and Action. Having qualms about Swamp Thing, Animal Man - good comics but very bleak - Resurrection Man, Green Lantern and GLC. Overall, I am still happier than not with the reboot, but I can see the energy levels dropping already.

Movies: I suspect that I will only see a couple of the fall films. J Edgar has a good actor and director, but looks to be heavy handed. Hugo and Tintin have talent far above what you would expect from such adaptations. The Muppets, however, waits until Batya is able to see it with me at home (as she can't see movies in the theaters during her year in mourning). That said, Frank Oz's rejection of the script does not bode well.

I'm currently about a hundred pages into A Clash of Kings, having been suckered into the series by the HBO treatment.

Movie-wise, I'm really looking forward to War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Hobbit. Last weekend I watched The American and, as much as I really adore George Clooney, I was snoozing about halfway through. It was shot beautifully, though; one of the most color-rich experiences I've seen in a recent film. So, it had that going for it. And I will probably go see the new Sherlock Holmes movie in theaters because I am predictable and love that kind of thing, even though I should probably know better.

And Castle? I can see Castle reading pretty much anything and everything, but having a real taste for those gritty crime noir serials they used to sell on book racks. Same with films; Castle's a bit of a polyglot when it comes to genres of pop culture -- he imbibes anything and everything.

One of these days I'll go back to my reread of Villains By Necessity. I haven't been reading much lately (I mean, I have Unseen Academicals and just... haven't been able to make myself pick it up on my lunch breaks at work).
Movies... eh? I want to watch all of RED at some point,a s what I've seen is quite entertaining.
And as for TV: Of course I'm waiting on this year's Warehouse 13 Christmas episode. And Once Upon a Time has completely sucked me in.

Tomorrow, the 'rents and I are going to go see Puss in Boots. In upcoming releases, I'm looking forward to Happy Feet Two, The Muppets (at least, I was until Alex's comment below) and The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn (America gets it after the civilized world, heavy sigh). Don't have XMFC at home yet, but the Blu-ray will be on my Christmas list, as will Snuff and a few other things.

I'm reading my GURPS Fourth Edition books, specifically High-Tech, and large chunks of 1920s-related Wikipedia, with an eye to working out the tech level and divergence point of the Unspeakable Pup's timeline (which I figure Infinity Unlimited would call "Reality Qadmon").

I'm actually reading three things at once. IDEK.

A biography on Vivien Leigh, the Bloom County treasury, and I'm re-reading If Chins Could Kill.

Of my pups, Jules is the heavier reader, preferring mainly books on intellectual growth. Clementine loves trashy novels and mostly reads fashion magazines. And Dixie reads light fiction - and, of course, music.
