Substitute DE

So I'm home sick and since there's no DE posted yet, I'll nab it. I've actually two questions and feel free to answer both, one or neither.

1. What metrics do you use to decide on applying a character?

2. What character (not necessarily from your canon) would you love to see in Bar?

And now for soup.

*sends tea* I hope whatever you have passes quickly. Both my parents and I spent the break getting over something awful that made us congested and croaking.

1) In terms of characters I don't really have metrics. If the character is loud enough and I can clearly see their story, I'll probably app them. I have a few characters where I worry that I have their voice down and need more pushing before I app them. This is one reason I don't have a lot of characters because they don't move in on me as much as they do on other people. Though they have accumulated on me much faster than I ever thought would happen. When I began playing I never expected to have more than one character now I have about ten if you count who I play in Mixed Muses.

2) I'd be curious to see a version of Magneto and am constantly surprised we don't have one as we have such a strong Marvel/X-Man cast.
Since I've been reading it recently about seeing characters from the Iron Druid books, because I think they'd fit in very well.

I also just finished reading one of the Marvel Power Pack trades and they're so good. I'm going to see if I can find another one so each niece can have one.

One more edit and then I'll stop. In another thread I had Charles mention that he'd seen Captain America newsreels during the war but I didn't recall if that was with Ben or not. If it wasn't then I can go back and change my last tag.

Actually we do have a Charles, they've been apped and approved but not played yet. Check the cast list. Otherwise I might have apped my Charles, in a way I'm slightly grateful since Marvel is such a big and intimidating canon.

Yes, the Power Pack books are wonderful, I read the Thor one. My nieces are seven and nine, is there another one that you'd recommend or just any of them?

For the PB, his face looks really good but Atticus has that bright red hair. If you want to test him out, I've got a new Charles' EP over in MM.

That makes perfect sense, being sick is tiring. Drink liquids, let other people do things and rest as much as you can.

I've heard good things about Franklin Richards as well, this should be fun to investigate and I know my nieces will enjoy them and I get to read them first.

1. They have to talk to me, and pretty consistently. If the character voice moves in and is pretty strong for a sustained period, and I have the frequent feeling of "Ooh how cool would it be for (insert name here) to meet that character!" then I will app them.

2. Marvel-verse Loki, preferably with emphasis on the movie.
John Druitt from Sanctuary
Jacuzzi Splot from Baccano!
Abraham Van Helsing from any iteration of Dracula
Dantes/The Count from Count of Monte Cristo

Ditto on Druitt, though Nikola is vehementl disagreeing on that...

Loki! Is so tempting, but all I know is the movie-verse.

1. I have a few vague criteria I use when evaluating a possible pup that more or less apply to all the characters I play.

A) Do I understand and otherwise "get" the character? *eyes pups* This may or may not say good things about my psyche.
B) Is there enough going on in a character's canon and/or with their own personal growth that I can get a lot of mileage out of them?
C) Does the character lend him/herself to humor? I can do deep dark serious arcs and moments, but I can't do a character who is deep dark and serious all the time.

2. I've been on a Criminal Minds kick thanks to watching TV with my dad. I have periodically wondered what some of them would make of Milliways.

[identity profile] mountain-born.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oddly, my logic on the mileage point doesn't always follow with my pups. I mean, Mary Bennet? Who does nothing in her canon but hang around the background and be annoying? But I looked at her and went, "You are who I was at 13. And I know there's a heck of an arc that can be played there."

It's that sort of logic that only makes sense in my head. :)

I love your logic for Mary and she's wonderful. I adore the weird friendship she and William are starting to form.

[identity profile] mountain-born.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I do too! Even if Mary herself is still a tad skeptical.

Mary's just happy there are a few people in Milliways who seem to understand How Things Should Properly Be. Even if they are Americans. :)

1) Hard to say, exactly. Communication is key - I wasn't absolutely sure I could manage Fluttershy until we ended up having a conversation that had no relation to either her canon or Milliways.

2) There are so many options, but at the moment all I can come up with is "any canonmate". Except Rydia, from Kain's canon. That would be... complicated until both are past a particular point in canon.

Awesome theme music!

I try to figure out if the pup has the potential to make the bar more awesome, or at least more confusing. Also good to check is if I can write more than a paragraph in what I think is the pup's voice without going in a editing it to shreds. Not that this stops me from occasional bouts of massive editing where I exposition all over the page and need to trim it back...
And sometimes they just wave their arms back and forth in my head and yell, "Hey! Thread me with that guy! We can try and cheat at cards with each other."

As for what characters I would love to see? Um.

Doctor Dinosaur from Atomic Robo would be hilarious. Hilarious and full of grenades. Canonmates in general would be good - I have a bunch of pups who would rather like their significant others to find a door.

Excuse me, I'll just be over here. Facepalming at the headvoice.

Okay, you got me there. But is Giant Man any better? Well I guess it'd be less creepy at least.

I don't really use anything specific, but I do seem to have a type. I think Mycroft may well be the only exception to this, thinking about it. But all my pups seem to really excel at something at the cost of seriously failing at something else, be it social skills or just staying out of prison (two have the latter problem, actually).

For the second one, I'm not really sure. I need to get back into actually playing, though. DX

1) These days? I really need to have their voice down and they have to be consistently noisy. I have other places to try out muses-which-may-be-whims.

2) I am selfish, so I'd adore a Lex. Also, if someone were to pick up and be active with Zod, I might die. And then I'd come back to life and have AWESOME RP with them!

1. How loud they are, whether there are canonmates to be had, what there is in the world to play with (that was the big draw with Cata), probably some other stuff that I'm forgetting.
Latest relevant example: Rebecca St. Clair, who I still have yet to give a journal. She's pretty consistently loud, but she also staunchly refuses to go anywhere without Jack and their relationship is one of the main things I'd want to let unfold. (I do have a partner in crime for MM purposes, but Milliways isn't her bag anymore and that's okay, it just means I'd need a partner in crime here.)

2. More Villains By Necessity characters! In particular, I would love to see Blackmail (I adore him and considered apping him once upon a time, but then things dictated picking up Sam instead) or Valerie (I so badly want the excuse to use 'welcome to Milliways, please don't eat the patrons' in actual dialogue); Sam insists I put in a good word for Kaylana or Arcie (in that order); and Robin would also be kind of awesome. And while my characters disagree, I think Mizzamir could be interesting as a plot character.
As noted above, I would also love to rope someone into playing Jack. :D? For the more current W13 cast, Pete or HG (...okay so it's a given definition of 'current') would also be awesome. OR STEVE.
--OH I FORGOT ONCE UPON A TIME. I want to see if/how going to Milliways affects the way the curse works! Also I want more Ruby. Anyone really but especially Ruby.

I can and have apped without canonmates before, and in some cases would have probably done so without them anyway. (Having Artie around definitely swayed me on Claudia, but she got noisy fast, so I probably would've caved eventually.) But sometimes you just need someone else to work with, and that's the key with Rebecca.
Once Upon a Time is made of awesome. (My only complaint so far is WOULD LIKE MOAR RUBY PLS, but I'm sure they'll get to her story sooner or later!) I wish I had a headvoice, because I can see this thing where Milliways by its nature keeps the curse from acting as it's intended and then people start remembering stuff, but so far I don't.
(...And of course Cata and/or Sam would stab Regina in the face for whitewashing everyone ever. Though at least it's acknowledged to be a Bad Thing in this case.)

1: Canon strength, my general knowledge of the character involved, and my ability to dig into their headspace.

2: Bar needs a TBBT cast, man. And Psych cast would love and need a Lassie! Also I'd love a Dangle, or a Lord Bowler.
