His reasoning was difficult, if not impossible, to explain. He couldn't tell someone what it was like to actually live in complete balance with nature and the Spirits. He couldn't tell someone the pure rush of wonder that came with feeling the Spirits' approval bloom in his mind and the joy it brought with it.

Just like he couldn't explain how he could feel the weight those Spirits now held as nature was stretched thin.

"And if they don't, I hope I'm dead before I see the world become a wasteland."

Charles can feel some of what he can't explain and he understands better why this man has so little hope.

"So do I. ...And maybe find who's behind this portal."

"Yes, I'm going to see if I can learn more at the counter. I'm Charles Xavier if we ever meet again,"

He offers his hand to Merrick. This wasn't a useful conversation about this place but Charles has learned a lot.

"Merrick Baliton." He accepted the handshake - something he wouldn't have done years ago. "Good luck."
