We are now running on emergency backup DE.

Let's talk user names! This can be the journals themselves or T-Minus names, whichever you'd prefer, but in either case: Why'd you pick that to represent your character?
a1enzo: (Default)

[personal profile] a1enzo 2012-06-07 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Enzo's main catchphrase is "Alphanumeric!" (which was chosen to mean "awesome" for no very good reason). alphanumeric_enzo is long and unwieldy (and exceeded the LJ character limit anyway). So, a1 = alphanumeric.

It only occurred to me later that A-1 = extremely good, so that could sort of justify the catchphrase!
alsoagreengrass: shy, thoughtful, insecure (you gathered all my dreams in)

[personal profile] alsoagreengrass 2012-06-07 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] alsoagreengrass - Because he's a Malfoy but he's more than just that, too.

[personal profile] thenextround - Because he travels a lot and he likes his mead a lot and he's always fighting too, so basically he's always looking for the next round.

Felix is [personal profile] venusadept_2. This is because he was the second playable Venus Adept (earth-magic user) in his canon. Also, the Venus Adept of the second game. In T-Minus he's obstinateEarthling, a legacy of a crossover thingy I was trying to make at one point. I picked a set of four letters, like Homestuck's (though I chose MEOW, for a couple of reasons, rather than GCAT) and randomly assigned letter-pairs to the characters. Then I derandomized them slightly so that OW would go to a character on whom it'd be more amusing, leaving OE to Felix. Then I came up with vaguely-fitting usernames to go with the letter pairs.

Kain is [personal profile] baron_dragoon on account of he's the head of the Dragoons of Baron. Indeed, I think until the GBA remake there were no other Dragoons programmed into the game at all, making him the Baron Dragoon. He does not currently have T-Minus access.

Fluttershy is [personal profile] needs_fern because she reminds me of a character in Rune Factory 2, named Dorothy. Dorothy becomes upset when she needs to be without her stuffed kangaroo(-oid), Fern. She's circumspectPsyche largely because that's what Karkat's mun picked, and I saw no good reason to change it. "Psyche" is in there because it's the ancient Greek word for "butterfly", which is relevant to her cutie mark (and, in some ways, the rest of her life; look, for instance, at her Gala fantasy in 1x03, which starts with her flitting lightly from flower to flower).

Cranky is [personal profile] magnetic_hair mostly for the amusement factor. During the episode in which he's featured, Pinkie (with Rarity's off-screen help) gives him a new toupee (the "Dreamboat Special"), which looks very much like the hair of a river serpent encountered in episode 1x02. Said river serpent, thanks to the fans and the vagaries of Youtube's automatic captioner, has been dubbed Steven Magnet. Cranky is not on T-Minus, although it's entirely possible that either Pinkie or I will arrange for him to get one, purely (in OOC terms, at least) because it would aggravate him so.

Julie is the 84th FISS of her world and so [personal profile] fiss84 That number is a big part of her character, at first being her shame and then being her pride.

Thalia was [personal profile] aigiochos which is one of Zeus' epithets which means Aegis bearer. I used it since she wears a copy of his Aegis. When she comes back from canon she'll be [personal profile] chameno_koritsi which is Greek for lost girl since she becomes the girl who won't grow up.

Mars is [personal profile] u2642 as that's the unicode for the symbol for Mars. I couldn't think of anything else that clicked.

Palamedes is olive_and_clove due to his aura color (dark olive green) and its scent (clove).

Kate Kane is [personal profile] to_serve as that is her driving goal in life. She tried to serve in the military and that didn't work out so when she bumped into Batman once, she was inspired to serve in another way.

As to T-Minus, none of my current pups are interested. Val would have been but I'm planning on retiring her to Enzo's world next month. If Palamedes were from a more modern time he'd likely be tenebrousKnight or some such.

My two new pups likely will be interested and one will be something like mutantSavant while the other I'm still working on; polyVert, animaAnimus or callowChangeling come to mind. Actually I'm really liking callowChangeling.

→ Ben Wade ([personal profile] almosthonorable): Truth in advertising.

→ Gina Cowell ([personal profile] deadlinedriven): See above; as a publishing powerhouse, this lady lives and breathes deadlines, and she doesn't hesitate to hound lackadaisical writers as needed.

→ Kate Warner ([personal profile] justdidntseeit): Adapted from a line in canon. Kate blames herself for failing her younger sister, Marie; Kate says that Marie became involved with a terrorist organization because Kate wasn't paying close enough attention. "I should've seen something before it got this bad," she tells Jack Bauer. "What she did could start a war, and I could've stopped it."

→ Mary Morstan ([personal profile] intendtotake): I am notoriously terrible at coming up with journal handles; this one's courtesy of the ever-lovely [personal profile] wakeupnew and [personal profile] storybrooke, and it's pretty much perfect. Also from a line from canon -- in conversation, Holmes tells Mary to "take Watson, for instance," and she immediately replies, "I intend to."

→ Ned Stark ([personal profile] houseofhonor): This is a mild play on House Stark; Ned and his unwavering sense of honor go hand-in-glove.

→ Raylan Givens ([personal profile] itwasjustified): Straight from a quote in canon -- Raylan's go-to reason for any shooting or altercation he's involved with is that "it was justified."

I wouldn't be able to tell you what inspired me to name his journal "linkfaec".

(...it's because I and others tend to have that reaction whenever we play Skyward Sword. or look at screencaps. Just. "Link. Your face.")

Although soon after I discovered the nickname "Master Shortpants" except lol $15 for a rename token wwatevvs

I have no idea what his T-Minus username or icon would be yet. He hasn't been introduced to it yet. Although I would love for him to start using it!

What is T-Minus?
boston_bruiser: (Default)

[personal profile] boston_bruiser 2012-06-07 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"boston_bruiser" - Voodoo's from South Boston, and I was reading a lot of TV Tropes at the time I made his account.

pointPhocidae - City Point is a neighborhood in South Boston, and all true seals are members of the family Phocidae. I know, puns - I'm a horrible person.

"bornuntotrouble" - John has a troubled past that he can never quite seem to shake.
ceitfianna: (my muses)

[personal profile] ceitfianna 2012-06-07 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Will Scarlett: [personal profile] will_scarlett-The first username other than my own that I created and I went the simple route.

William Evans: [personal profile] not_his_pa-William spends the whole of 3:10 to Yuma defining himself by his father, sometimes in good ways and in bad. I like it because it really sums up a lot about him, he's not his father, but he's completely influenced by him.

Demeter: [personal profile] wheatencrown-I had a hard time figuring out this username, but Demeter is connected to wheat and sometimes she is portrayed with a crown of wheat. Also this one has the feel of a classical epithet to it which I really like.

Sameth: [personal profile] makesthings-This one comes from a canon quote where Sameth says the only thing he's good at is making things, the exact quote can be found on his journal. I don't remember how making became makes but its one of my favorite usernames.

Charles Xavier: [personal profile] balancingminds-I had a hard time getting a name I liked for Charles and I think I just stumbled onto this one but I love it. He's all about balance in terms of balancing his interactions but also creating balance between mutants and humans.

Jane Austen: [personal profile] janebecomes-This one is pretty obvious, her movie is called Becoming Jane and I just twisted it a little for her username. I like the simplicity of it.

Moist von Lipwig: [personal profile] morethanprops-Moist was another one where all the names I wanted were taken and I kept trying things. In his canon Moist relies a lot on props to change how he's perceived but its more than that which makes him a good con man.

Tumnus: [personal profile] friend_of_lucy-Chat came up with this one, Bethan in particular as I was having trouble thinking of a name but this is one that's effective and true for him. Tumnus is Lucy's friend and that changes everything for him.

The Pirate King: [personal profile] agloriousthing-Another canon quote for it is a glorious thing to be a pirate king.

And since I don't use T-Minus for my pups extra of my OC over in the sandboxes. Tiwa: [personal profile] piwakawaka which is the Maori name for a fantail and that's the kind of bird she turns into.

[personal profile] works_in_space - In Star Trek IV, when asked if he's from outer space, Kirk says he's from Iowa, and only works in space.

[personal profile] says_the_booyah - When Cyborg leaves the Titans to run the Titans East team, Starfire asks, "who will shout the booyah?"

[personal profile] thefirststark - If Captain America is the First Avenger, Howard is the first Stark.

[personal profile] pirate_gibbs - followed in the footsteps of [personal profile] pirate_jack

[personal profile] 52_dropoff - Charlie died in the DC Comics series 52.

Yrael's [personal profile] mogget_cat is just what was available at the time. He was shaped like a cat, and they called him Mogget. I had no idea how far he'd evolve past what canon gives him, with the help of the bar and its people.

Sunshine's [personal profile] sunbaked_baker is descriptive. Rae is a baker who gets her strength in magic (and in everyday life) from the sun. When terrible things aren't happening in canon, she spends time lying out in the sunlight. Got a poisoned wound that won't heal? Bake it in sunlight. She doesn't go so far as to think of her time in the sun as recharging, but that's essentially what it is. I'm eventually planning on her to find out about T-Minus, where her username will be solarGastronome.

Zelgadiss' [personal profile] chime_ra_tilt has three or four different references in it, which I'm still kind of gleeful about. First, Zel is a chimera; thus, "chime_ra". His appearance is his one real berserk button or way to undermine his projected identity as the cool, mysterious loner. Getting his human body back is his obsession thus, "tilt" references that he isn't all that balanced about the subject. Also, the Ra Tilt is his signature spell, the most powerful of the Shamanist spells in his world. Annnd, it's a stretch, but I like to think that the "chime" part of his username, by itself, references Rezo's staff, which chimes when it hits the ground. Rezo was Zelgadiss' great-grandfather, who turned him into a chimera in the first place.
the_gene_genie: (LoM - Dancing)

[personal profile] the_gene_genie 2012-06-07 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to wait until the move to DW to get the username I always wanted for Gene. [personal profile] the_gene_genie is easy - it's how he refers to himself repeatedly through canon.

Though, he wants me to assure everyone that it's a reference to how magic he is, not to the gay bloke in that there David Bowie song.

evil_koala_626: (Default)

[personal profile] evil_koala_626 2012-06-07 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] evil_koala_626 is from a line in canon wherin Nani flips through a book of dog breeds in an attempt to adequately describe Stitch. She finally settles on "I think it might be a koala. An evil koala." The 626 of course is his "official" designation before Lilo renames him.

[personal profile] somekindalucky is likewise a quote from Chalk's canon.

[personal profile] rustedtoaster came about from the table top game Cybergeneration. all characters have nicknames or "Yo tags" in the setting. I picked the silliest thing that came to mind: Toaster. This lead to players calling me Toaster outside of game sessions, which in turn lead to people calling me Toaster on AIM which lead to Crackchat shortening it to Toast (which I am extremely fond of) and now the nickname has crashed back in to real life where my coworkers also call me Toast.

And then there is [personal profile] trot_fuzz who moved in some time last month and refuses to go away. The meaning of that name is I am a giant dork and puns are hilarious.

[personal profile] notinthebook: Mary Margaret asks Emma who she is in Henry's book of stories, Emma replies "I'm not in the book." It's a name that encompasses her disbelief in the Curse and everything it entails.

(Though I have plans for her user name to change waaaaaay in the future.)

[personal profile] the_seafarer: Caspian was known as "Caspian the Seafarer" or "Caspian the Navigator."

[personal profile] jack_f_twist: Jack is consistently referred to as "Jack fuckin' Twist" all through canon.

[personal profile] fullofmercy: It takes three men to lift the the Punisher and throw it to Wolfwood. One of them says "Damn, that thing's heavy!" and Wolfwood replies: "That's because it's so full of mercy."

Which is ironic, because it's full of guns.

[personal profile] haole_cop: Danno is often referred to, derisively, as "the haole cop." Which he's okay with.

From the distant past:

[personal profile] touch_destiny: Tia Dalma tells Will that he has "a touch of destiny" about him, while taking his hand. [profile] subtle_will: Will Parry is the bearer of the Subtle Knife, and prefers blending in and becoming as invisible as possible, while still being immovable. [personal profile] galactic_prez: Zaphod...is the President of the Galaxy. Though I always liked the idea of [profile] best_bang for him.
ikissdhimbck: (Love and Hate)

[personal profile] ikissdhimbck 2012-06-07 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Taken from this scene in canon. Which, I felt, summed up Kate's personality and story arc pretty succinctly.
bcgphoenix: (fringe: unafraid of the dark)

[personal profile] mr_gaeta: Pretty self-explanatory. Whether he's in a civilian or military capacity, Gaeta is always referred to as "Mr. Gaeta" by his superiors.

[personal profile] changeinasnap: The Trickster tends to accompany all of his illusions, tricks, etc. with a snap of his fingers. He'll change everything in a snap! Ah ha ha I'm so funny. >.>

[personal profile] flip_the_lights: The first time someone attempts to test Olivia's abilities (as an adult, anyway *WRY*), she's presented with a grid of lights and instructed to turn them off telepathically. This happens twice. With the first grid, she and the Fringe team -- believing the man testing her won't give up needed information unless Olivia succeeds -- rig the lights so they turn off on their own, no telepathy needed. The second grid...well.
misslucyjane: winnie-ther-pooh (very little brain)

[personal profile] bagginsofbagend: How Bilbo describes himself--particularly in the movie, as far as the trailer has revealed, but I think it describes him perfectly in that no matter how far he roams, he comes back to Bag End. The story is, after all, "there and back again." (Until the Grey Havens happens, but that's a long time in Bilbo's future at this juncture.)

[personal profile] dragons_emrys Merlin is a dragon lord and Emrys is the druids' name for him. I'm not actually fond about this name and would like to change it if I find a better one. (Suggestions welcome.)

[personal profile] drjohnhwatson I wanting something straightforward for John, and that's the name he uses on his in-canon blog.

[personal profile] jack_inthegreen It's one of the Green Man's titles. I probably could have taken out the underscore when we moved, but ah well.

[personal profile] likesthecoat Ianto really likes Jack's coat. He tells Jack so twice in the first day they know each other.

[personal profile] pushtheboatout The History Boys, in a way, is about how things change for seemingly tiny reasons; and Dakin, in particular, becomes occupied with the subjunctive tense, the tense of possibility. "Pushing the boat out" is basically opening up to a new possibility. (In context it's having sex with one of his teachers. Oh, Dakin.)

[personal profile] threeandoh In the pilot episode of White Collar, Peter points out to Neal that they're "three and oh," that Peter has caught him three times and Neal has yet to escape him.
ihavemyflaws: (the frak is that supposed to mean)

When BSG starts Kara has a tense relationship with her XO, Colonel Saul Tigh, an irritable man with a troubled marriage and a notorious drinking problem. They get into a scuffle over a card game and Kara punches him, ending up in the brig. Later, after she's done some daredevil flying, he sort of tries to make amends with her, congratulate her on what she did, but Kara lashes out, pointing out his flaws. A few episodes later Galactica finds a much-needed source of water and Kara shows up at Tigh's quarters to share some with him. It's an olive branch, and as she pours she tells him "I have my flaws, too."

[personal profile] noattachments for Kate Austen comes from a scene in which US Marshal Edward Mars is at the Sydney airport with her and explaining to local law enforcement why he needs a Halliburton case with five guns on the flight. Edward goads her into hitting him with this taunting speech: "This belonged to her childhood sweetheart, who she got killed a couple of years ago when she was on the run. Poor guy. A wife, a two-year-old kid. What was his name, hmm? Well, somewhere along the way during the three years I was chasing her, she starts calling me at my house and whining on about her mitigating circumstances. But what she's really doing is taunting me, so I tell her that I've got what's-his-name's little toy airplane in a safe deposit box in New Mexico. So she somehow figures out which bank, which safe deposit box. She seduces some idiot to rob the damn bank, and then she puts a bullet in her new friend because she's done using him. But she leaves all the money. She just takes the plane because that's the one thing in the whole world that Kate does care about. She has no attachments, and I think she's telling herself she needs it to atone for killing her boyfriend, what's-his-name. God, Kate, c'mon: what was his name?"

And [personal profile] anythingbutblue is taken from a line at the end of the Jupiter Jazz two-parter, in which she runs off with all the money in the Bebop's safe and then finds herself in a bar in a town where she's the only woman. She connects with the bar's resident saxophone player, a blue-eyed man named Gren who has his share of secrets (all of which she discovers over the course of the night). Her adventures with him culminate in her shooting at him, and he cuffs her and leaves her behind in his apartment. After she's been rescued and is back on the Bebop, Ed gleefully paints her toenails and gets a sigh out of her: "Oh, Ed. Anything but blue." It's such a layered line for her that I couldn't resist it.

John Munch's [personal profile] blowupthefloats comes from canon. In an early SVU episode his partner Brian Cassidy complains about Munch always raining on his parade. Munch's response was, "I don't want to just rain on it, I want to blow up all the floats."

Dani's [personal profile] ami_imperfect is also a quote from canon, in this case from her premiere episode. It comes from a question she asked her creator Vlad Masters, about whether or not she was "imperfect" like the other clones of Danny that he'd created.

Rennes' [personal profile] the_wrenster comes from one of the nicknames he received as a felon, "The Wren", which was a play on the pronunciation of his surname and alluded to the fact that he "flown the coop" on seven major prisons. He was only referred to by this name once, ironically after his death.

Klara's [personal profile] blumekinde is an example of me putting my online translator-fu to use. It's supposed to be "flower child" in German, because Klara speaks German and her mutant ability is one over flowers and plants.

Rue's [personal profile] onabirdswing was the hardest to come up with. I had wanted her username to have something to do with birds, but it seemed like all the variations with mockingjay in them were already been used on LJ. I think finally I just pulled "on a bird's wing" out of thin air and decided to go with it.
yakalskovich: (Mun and pups)

[personal profile] yakalskovich 2012-06-07 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] ostro_goth -- Teja is an Ostrogoth, and as he's extra gothy, he gets the arbitrary underscore of not necessary.

[personal profile] scots_wolf -- Urquhart is from Scotland, and he's often compared to a wolf in his canon.

[personal profile] no_mere_marble -- All we know about Antinoos (including the canon I take him from) is filtered through the gaze of others; all we really know about him is his face, in many many marble versions. But Antinoos was a living, breathing person once, a teenager who had by the oddest fluke become the eromenos of the world's most powerful man at the time. So, I want to look at things from his side, because he's no mere marble.

[personal profile] destroy_restart -- That's Tower's meaning within the tarot: destroy the old so something new can be started.

[personal profile] molto_magnifico -- Lorenzo 'il Magnifico' de'Medici, from a cracky canon with random bits of Italian strewn in.

[personal profile] source_fairy -- Sirona is a goddess of hot springs, and she writes computer code -- both things can be called 'source'. And she likes to wear artificial fairy wings.

[personal profile] margolotta -- Exactly as it says on the tin. The same is true for [personal profile] lady_loki over at MM/PFSB.
ladyoflorien: it's a mad mad world (Confused: FS - Chiana & DRD ?)

[personal profile] ladyoflorien 2012-06-07 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] eyeeyecaptain - Completely and totally Becky's idea, because Becky is the most hilarious. ♥ (For those unfamiliar with canon, well, she's the captain of the Planet Express starship, and a cyclopean mutant.)

[personal profile] srspirate - I inherited this journal via adoption, where he was part of a matching set: 'srsdrinker' for Athos, and 'srsbsns' for Aramis. It's a play on a few quotes from canon, wherein each of the Musketeers take their ______ very seriously.

[personal profile] donthidemycigs - A running theme of mine: mocking my characters mercilessly. Grace's opening scene in canon has her waking from the nav link, sitting up, and going, "... Guys, where's my cigarettes? Come on, what's wrong with this picture!" She's a chain smoker, and she's a bitch, so you better not mess with her cigs.

[personal profile] whathastobedone - Jack Bauer: "Agent Walker, she's good huh?" Agent Kilner: "Yes, sir. She understands what it takes to get the job done."

[personal profile] flickedmethevs - This was a collaborative effort with several of my LoM/A2A cast mates. I needed to pick something that wouldn't be spoilery, and, well, it's very Ray. Thanks, guys! (To flick someone the Vs is pretty much to give them the finger.)

[personal profile] maidenofthewest - Rather a first-grab username, Lily is canonically referred to as the "Fair-Haired Maiden of the West." I appreciate it as a bit of sarcasm, as Lily spurns the title.

[personal profile] someonetocarryyou - Steph's fault! ♥ Rather, it was the first thing I thought of, but I wasn't sure it would work. After a few hours of poking at other names, Steph hopped online and it was her first suggestion. I figured, hey, good omens. It's taken from a canon quote, from Mal and Zoë's war years: "When you can't walk, you crawl. And when you can't do that, you find someone to carry you."

[personal profile] happilyneverafter - Seemed appropriate for a fairy tale villain. It also has a nice double meaning for Regina's character, who is certain her happiness is forever taken from her.
varadia: (Milliways 2012)

[personal profile] varadia 2012-06-07 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 - I came up with this one off the top of my head, insofar as X has adamantium claws, a lot of damage (i.e. 'broken edges'), and is a self-harmer in canon due to her childhood living conditions, yay lack of stimulation. And then I capped it off with x23 because that is her designation/code name/identity. Her name, though, is X. *solemn*

[personal profile] creator_raven - Raven's was semi-easy, because he is Raven, and there are some stories where he makes the world, or otherwise creates the rules/setting of the world that exists today. So. *hands*

[personal profile] hopeitsworthit - This is from a canon line in Scarecrow (episode in S1), where Dean's chained up in an orchard and yells 'I hope your apple pie is freaking worth it!'. As canon progresses, there are a hell of a lot of other things Dean hopes are worth it, too. So it stuck.

[personal profile] theunsmiling - In her canon, Michael stops smiling when Lucifer falls, and she does not smile at all until he comes back home again. It's kind of sad.

[personal profile] themysciran_diana - Her name is Diana, and she is a Themysciran princess. You can disown her, you can remove her title of Princess, you can take Themyscira out of the known universe, but she'll still always be the woman shaped by her mother and her sisters. Always.

[personal profile] wolflord_andain - Galadan is the Wolflord, and he is lord of the andain. It's another one of those never-fail names.

[personal profile] lifeisacatch - Another canon quote. Flemeth, when talking to Hawke after being released from the amulet, says "There is always a catch. Life is a catch! I suggest you catch it while you can." Also Flemeth finds mortals hilarious. The joke is always on them!

[personal profile] di_or_dci - This one is part of the central conceit of the series, where in his life in 2006 Sam is a DCI, while in 1973 he is a DI. Which one is real? Which one does he like best? How much does that matter? All those questions and more are answered in LoM (and A2A)!
