Daily Entertainment.

Today's my last DE of the week, because I'm off to a pagan camping weekend tomorrow morning! Which, hilariously enough, used to be a Girl Scout camp. My troop leader would've popped a blood vessel if she knew that this place got bought out for something like this. *giggles*

Which brings me to -- camping! What would camping with your pups be like? Would there be hunting for food, or fighting with the can of beans to get it to open? Would it be like Tom Haverford with a DJ Roomba and shooting Ron Swanson in the back of the head? Do tell!

"All right, I'll take first watch, Dogmeat will take second, and-"

"Nobody's taking watch here."

"But if something comes into the camp-"

"Nothing's coming into the camp."

"One little fire isn't going to keep everything away, you know. Yao guai don't even care."

"Yes, I know, but this is South Mountain Reservation, and we're in West Orange, New Jersey. There's nothing here that can kill us."

"... I'm going to take first watch anyway."

Well, the one good thing about Star Trek V is that we see what camping with Kirk is like. It's so retro it's insane!

Knox and Cyborg decline to entertain this question. Even though Cy knows how to rough it. But they are city slickers. The best I can do is to conjure images of Calvin and Hobbes in the backyard camping with all the comforts of home.

Charlie would go for the barest bones camping experience. A sleeping bag and emergency supplies only. And then would demand roughing it. He'd even say using a fishing rod is cheating. I don't know how serious he'd be about this, though.

Howard would probably be the sort to drive a motor home of the 40s close enough for an emergency. And then have a well stocked tent.

Camping with Teresa is... interesting.

For a start there's the fact the Claymores eat like a bite of food every few days. And then they sleep in a sitting position propped up against their swords. Blankets? Feeling the cold? That's for loser types!

At least Teresa knows how to make a fire, and when she kills something for breakfast, she'll let the rest of the camp share it without taking anything for herself.

And if she thinks you need something to drink of a bath, she'll throw you into a river. She's maternal like that.

Gordon and Adrian have been camping in the past, technically. It wasn't vacation camping, it was overland travel from the Catskills in New York to Preston County, West Virginia, without being noticed by the Combine or eaten by the wildlife, but it did involve 'walking in the woods', 'scrounging up food and water', and 'sleeping under the stars'. Also it involved 'waking up to find your companion had beaten several unholy things to death with a crowbar because it was quieter' and, at one point, 'piling into a very small cave with two unhappy white supremacists and nobody talking until it stopped snowing long enough to leave'.

Camping with a wizard would be pretty damn comfortable, actually. Given the magic and the magic tents. Camping becomes a four-star hotel.

Except Scorpius, being the more adventurous type, would want to do something like this.

Ben is awesome for camping trips and is a purest. Baked beans, hot dogs and ghost stories for the win. Bonus point if you have kids around to mess with.

More later as I wake up.

Kate wouldn't be good I think, she's too urban. She'd have to have the basics from her military training but I think she'd grumble the whole time.

Julie would have a blast and would know all there is to know about setting up and all. I'm assuming since her family isn't well off camping was the family vacation.

Hank would be odd as I can see him trying to study everything. He wouldn't have any clue what to do though would likely be able to pitch a pretty good tent. don't ask him to cook though.

Beast Boy would excel at camping. He did grow up on an animal sanctuary and so had to have camped a lot as he and his mom moved about the sanctuary doing their thing. Don't ask him to go hunting though as he'd feel really weird hunting the things he could turn into. I don't know if he's vegetarian like his Teen Titan counterpart but it's got to be weird. Then again he did grow up on an animal sanctuary and so knows the circle of life intimately.

Mars lives for camping. He loves RV camping, day camping, camping where you can drive up to your spot and backpacking camping where in you only have what's on your back and it takes you all day to get hike to the campsite.

Thalia is awesome at urban camping but terrible at outdoor camping. So far at least.

Amascut is very capable of outdoor survival, though she still wouldn't know what to do with a can of beans. Well, no, she would probably cook them in the can in the process of getting it open, then give up and stab it open.

Yum, bean can innards. I have defeated you, bean can.

Camping with her is a safe proposition unless she decides you need to learn how to hunt.

Doc is well skilled in all the areas of camping - setting up a good sleeping area under the stars (ruined cabins and/or trees, rock outcroppings, etc.) for protection are a plus; if you have to use your oilskin for protection from the elements, then you do that. Firebuilding, cooking over said fire, and hunting things while on the trail to eat, he's got that. He can even make coffee! This is just...life, for Doc. Not a recreational activity.

The same goes for Dan Evans, and Jake Lonergan - it's just life.

Carl would also be really good at camping, though he would definitely bring a tent and a rucksack full of essential gear, these days. (He can do minimalist - and he's done minimalist before - but if this is for recreation or vacation, he's going to bring along some things to make it a bit more comfortable.) He's a little less skilled in hunting, but that's what a cooler is for.

Han would manage, but he would be Very Unhappy about the entire situation.

Skellig is very good at camping, but that comes from being homeless and having to make do with what he can manage to find and scavenge. He's very resourceful, and good at finding shelter (especially well-concealed shelter) and since he's got his advanced senses, hunting is a breeze. He's not a very good cook, though.

And the Probie...oh lord. That would probably be a disaster in all sorts of ways.

Camping with Sunshine would only really happen if she's in someone else's world. Because no one in her world really sleeps outside of a warded home-type place at night if one can help it. But, if she were elseworld and going camping, it'd probably be pretty comfortable. Tent, sleeping bags, fire, swimming in the river/lake/nearby body of water. Stories told late into the night, with s'mores.

Camping with Yrael would be an excercise in fending for yourself, and guarding whatever fish you caught. ^_^

Camping with Zelgadiss... well, technically, camping out is most of what he does, when he's not in a town where he can stay at an inn. Sleeping on the ground, maybe fire, and whatever food one has or can hunt/catch.

Hmmm.

Felix basically lives camping, although he doesn't think of it in those terms. I don't have any real idea of how he manages, food-wise, but I daresay he'd expect a companion to be able to do as much as he does - and then, when/if they can't, he'd just sigh and roll his eyes a bit and cover their part without a word.

Kain is... well, he's a military commander. So when he camps, there's certain patterns he expects. I imagine he and Cecil have worked something out for when they go off together without soldiers and such, so that neither is making demands they don't really want the other to fulfill and so on.

Fluttershy... a great deal, I think, depends on how familiar she is with the area and the people involved. Or at least how confident she is that they're safe. It bears noting, however, that her notion of "safe" is a bit different than some people's - scary noises in the dark, she'd be hiding under your pillow, but if a bear or a monster ambles into camp she's all over talking to it and making friends and gently suggesting that it find somewhere else to be. I imagine she'd make sure to bring enough food for everyone, just in case, unless maybe if Twilight and Applejack were both coming too. (Twilight is very organized, and AJ is super reliable. If they're there you can be sure that the food situation is handled. Though it doesn't necessarily hurt to make extra sure...) She'd probably volunteer to cook, too, though depending on how safe she feels you might be better off taking that on yourself.

Cranky doesn't want to go camping. No, really, he's fine where he is.

Ray has a note from his old Boy Scouting scoutmaster indicating that he was the worst scout in the history of scouting. He has not gotten appreciably better since. This includes camping. If the camp site does not have running water and concealed appliance plugins the trip is going to end in disaster.

Camping with Castiel would be and....interesting experience, I think. He'd be fine, but I think his fellow campers might be a bit disconcerted by his habit of frequently teleporting to and from the campsite with items that might be handy.

Parker's actually a pretty outdoorsy sort of girl, and while I don't think it's what she wants to do every weekend, she likes it. Camping with Parker would involve s'mores and ghost stories and the like.

Luna camps like a witch. And it's a pretty charmed (if you'll pardon the use of the word) way to go. Ditto Dumbledore.

Mary Bennet doesn't camp in the traditional sense. If there were a situation that required it (say, broken down carriage far from civilization) she'd roll up her sleeves and cope, attending to the practicalities.

Enzo learned some wilderness survival skills from Voodoo! Also he got a tent from Father Christmas. So he could rough it if he has to, although the whole "nature" thing is still foreign to his world.

He could probably manage some hunting or trapping if need be, but he would much rather bring rations. He doesn't like killing things that aren't trying to kill him (or someone else) first.

Thor would be perfectly happy to hunt for food, or to fight with the can of beans to get it open. I think his camping skills are -- patchwork; he's learned the principles very solidly, but he's actually done it much more infrequently, because the Bifrost plus Asgardian stamina mean you can go wandering and battling without needing to camp over so often. (Though I am 100% sure he went through a camp-in-the-palatial-living-room phase as a kid.) Good at orienteering, decent at putting up shelter (but probably needing a quick intro to Earth tents), not so great at cooking anything more complicated than "stick on a skewer or in a pot, heat over fire, done." He'd love recreational camping!

Trowa's lived rough a lot, and lived nomadic all his life. He's good at it. He'd be more likely to bring in some supplies than go hunting if it was pre-planned, but he's fine with either.

River would have fun! River would not be of tremendous use, I fear, especially with anything involving a significant attention span. And she's a city girl in a lot of ways, so she would not be the one pointing out "Oh, this plant can be used for that, and this way's north, and here's how you do this thing." But she'd enjoy it! And probably spend a while communing with whatever the local equivalent of chipmunks is, although they might not commune with her back.

Regan, in her youth, would have had fun with it in a completely city girl way, so long as it wasn't too long a trip. (She likes things like washing her hair and not having bugs in her sleeping bag.) Nowadays, I don't think she's all that eager to go sleep on an uneven surface in the middle of the outdoors. She could be talked into having fun for an overnight trip with people she liked who knew what they were doing; otherwise, she hopes you all have fun, and she will be sleeping in her own bed, thanks.

Clare I mentioned above. And Uzura would be totally useless, totally enjoy herself, and be blithely immune to most of the annoyances that bother humans.

Jack is totally awesome at camping! He loves everything about it: he loves roughing it with tent that's a glorified piece of canvas, he loves the fancy-schmancy tents and stoves and equipment you can get from a big department store, he loves the smell of campfires and doesn't mind doing dishes in a river. The thing is, he'll complain like hell about it, pretty much the whole time, because he loves it the way he loves riding and smoking and Ennis: it's just a thing he does.

He doesn't like it nearly so much if Ennis isn't there.

Emma...would not be a good camping partner. She's cool with crashing in her car, or in a tent if she has to, but she doesn't know why anyone would want to.

Danno and camping is a match made in Lorna Amusement Heaven. I bet Steve tries to drag him out to the wilderness and he hates it. (Although I heard he might take Grace on a school camping trip in S3, which only proves that he will do anything for his daughter.)

Caspian would probably not think of camping out for fun, though he's entirely capable of surviving in the wilderness and would be pretty cheerful the whole time.

Wolfwood would find himself lost in the woods with nothing but the Punisher and half a pack of cigarettes, and instead of trying to find his way out, would sit somewhere and smoke them ALL while musing about the idiocies of recreational activities.

Surprisingly, though perhaps not so much since hobbits are surprising folk, Bilbo is an excellent camper, particularly if the pony carrying the supplies hasn't been washed down the river 0:). Between his cooking skills and those leathery feet, he can walk quite a long ways and make sure that everything from breakfast to afternoon tea is delicious.

Merlin is also a good camper. He'll build a fire, sleep on the ground, make the meals, and maybe even do a little magic to amuse you. He does like prefer it, though, that he's also not stuck with all the cleanup.

Ianto hates camping. Almost being eaten by cannibals while on a work-related camping trip will do that to a person.

Jack loves camping, but that's because how it was done for centuries before this fancy-schmancy "house" thing came along.

Stuart thinks of camping as a miserable experience: stuck with his parents, bored in a caravan, enforced "fun"...no, thank you.

Peter and John, I think, seem like the types who'd be good at camping because they're good at making do; but wouldn't enjoy it very much, preferring comfortable hotels to roughing it.

Claudia: no. While she was a semi-successful Girl Scout, she hated the camping bits.

Cata will likewise be sticking to the city, thank you. Sam prefers city living as well, but he can get by living off the land if he has to (and having a druid girlfriend certainly doesn't hurt matters), but he doesn't know why people would do it for fun.

Imp is staring blankly at me over the concept.

If Regulus must go camping, he'll be doing so with all the amenities a rich British wizard can afford. So it won't be all that different from being at home, except perhaps without his mother and Kreacher hanging around.

Apollo's not bad at living off the land, all things considered - not as in practice as he used to be, but there are some things you don't forget.

Red is undoubtedly the best of my lot at living off the land; if you could deal with her making confused faces t the fact that people do this for fun like it's a vacation, it'd be a good experience.
(Ruby, on the other hand, is a 'camping is when room service is late' kind of girl.)

Will and William camping and spending a lot of time outside is just what they do. Different environments but same general idea, the thought of doing it for fun would confuse them.

Sameth is a mix, he knows how to survive outside, its something he quite enjoys, but he doesn't have to do it. He does mention in canon how comfortable he feels riding with his father and guards over the Old Kingdom, so I think its something he would enjoy. Also as Wallmaker, its something he's doing more and more.

Jane is like Mary Bennet, she could rough it if she needed to, but the entire idea of camping in a tent would get a face from her.

Moist can sleep on the road if he has to but he prefers his inns, because if he's sleeping by the side of the road, it means someone's chasing him.

Charles is a city boy. I'm fairly sure he was in the scouts and had to do some camping and he and Raven probably spent a few nights around the manor park, but its not something he likes that much. He likes his comforts of home.

Demeter finds the idea of camping sweet as its being closer to the land and she never really roughs it as she's a goddess and cheats.

Tumnus grew up in a forest, in a house in a forest but for him its also rather close to just what he knows.

The Pirate King probably knows how to rough it but he has a ship.

Were Mary ever to go camping, she would, much like Tom, do it in style. After all, who needs DJ Roomba when you have your own servants?

Hunting is a definite go, only preparing the game and any canned beans would be the task of the cooks. That's what they're paid for. Food would be consumed at a table--the way civilized people eat--not around some messy campfire, because of course the Crawley's would bring a table along. And china, and silver. Again, servants.

Mary enjoys spending time outdoors, so camping would be a welcome diversion. Plus she'd have an opportunity to break out some nice tweeds!

Mark probably went camping with his dad at least once when he was a kid. The back of the first compilation shows a photo of Nolan with a rod and reel, posing with a fish he caught. (The fact that the fish has tentacles and other non-fishy bits is never explained and perhaps best left to the imagination.) However, with a father who can lift 100 tons and fly at somewhere approaching Mach 12 without breaking a sweat, it would probably involve a nice leisurely drive in the family car, and then Nolan flying in all the gear they need. So Mark probably has little idea what is involved in actual camping. (Need food? Fly to the nearest town. Weather gets crazy? Fly home.) He's probably a veteran of the YMCA Summer Camps in his area (which, judging by the type of scenery shown in the comics is probably the Inland Empire of California; i.e., Riverside, San Dimas, Fresno). Canon says nothing about Boy Scouts, so I'm guessing he never was one. So, he's familiar with recreational camping, but not the hardcore, deep woods, man-against-nature kind that Wes Stroud and Bear Grylls turned into television shows.
