I took a trip up to Illinois, and spent three days at The Midsummer Faerie Celebration in a gorgeous little small town/suburb on North Shore, with a little plethora of friends, an amazing five minute beach walk, and three days full of laughter and beauty, magic and ritual, no matter what bad could come up. It was an incredibly perfect time.
(Hopefully work, and my time missed there at the end of last week, will be kind and gentle this morning settling me back in. I'm about two-thirds through my e-mail, too, so if you've left me anything it's in my list to get to at lunch [if possible on an iphone/ipad] or this afternoon/evening [around my meeting]. Love and have missed you all.)
Had an unexpected visit from a filker friend - she was staying a block away and had no idea we lived in the same area till it came up by accident. Was a very pleasant surprise.
Finally saw Avengers. Liked the script and acting, wasn't really that impressed by the rest, sad to say. And the more I think about it, the more the plot doesn't work for me. But I do look forward to having Howard Stark interact with more of his canonmates from the future.
And saw the last two episodes of Awake. Oh, what might have been. But at least we got a very ambitious and unique run of 13 weeks worth seeing again. (Watching this after seeing Avengers only serves to remind me that Joss used to do things like Awake. I really hope he doesn't do another Avengers film so he can go back to being Joss the Inventive, warts and all.)
I have a question for the floor, vis a vis Avengers. If Howard Stark retrieved the Cosmic Cube Tessarect in 1944, why did it sit unused for so long? I have ideas about how to use Howard after the war that are affected by this. Any thoughts?
At least Joss does his side projects, even while engaged in a big-budget blockbuster. Churning out two other movies while he was filming Avengers (one of which did extremely well for its target audience/budget bracket) is incredibly ambitious in my eyes. Still, I get what you mean about wanting more Joss the Inventive, my favorite flavor (even though I do hope he does the next Avengers film, because it was the script that made the movie as great as it was -- I'd hate to lose that).
((My life has been so nuts lately that even I haven't seen the last two episodes of Awake, though I'm looking forward to it.))
And, despite not having a Milliways-apped Avengers pup (yet), the most sensible answer to your question I can think of is that the Tessarect was covered in so much government red tape nobody could get access to it. As is the glorious history of our country when it comes to unusual/dangerous objects/inventions. That may not be the go-to opinion of the majority, however.
This is Cam. Too lazy to log out of an RP account.
Fourteen and a half miles on the bike on Saturday, a new Notes From New Vegas in my journal, a Father's Day barbecue with the family on Sunday, a good deal of vacuuming and cleaning around the apartment. Also I have discovered that Korean temple food is kind of unpleasant despite their efforts to make it harmonious, or at least the dried chip elements of it are. And this is from someone who plays What The Hell Is This in the snack food aisle of the Asian market and generally enjoys the beverages with squishy chewy bits that tend to squick Westerners out.
Annual festival in June held in New York City to promote Korean culture and temple food; it's sponsored by a large Buddhist organization and the Korean Consulate. They were giving out sample bags of chips that were typical of between-meal food for Buddhist monks and nuns, and there were other dishes as well that I didn't get to see (I got the bag from someone who had gone). problem is, one of the rules of Korean temple life is that you shouldn't allow spices and flavorings to become the target of attachment, so quite a lot of flavorings are against their rules. The food's supposed to have a lot of subtlety to it as a result, especially given Korean food's use of garlic and its relatives, all of which are on the no-fly list.
I wouldn't know about the main dishes, but the chips were unpleasant. I avoided the dried lotus root slices because I already knew what they tasted like, and tried chips of three other root vegetables. I think they were baked rather than fried or anything else, as there was no grease. Unfortunately I don't remember salt being involved either, and the puffy bits of stuff stuck to two out of three chips had about as much taste as a Cheeto with no cheese. Two of the chips had flavors that I personally found unpleasant (I'm one of those people who tastes the bitterness in PTC paper and who can't eat broccoli rabe because to me it tastes like soap), and the third was immensely difficult to pick out of my teeth in addition to being bland. There were some other chip varieties in the bag, but given that the two Korean guys in my office were eyeing the bag and refusing to try the contents (one had an excuse- quite a lot of food allergies, but the other, not so much), I decided to give up on the whole thing.
http://koreantemplefood.com/ has links if you want to look at the other material they had on offer. Just because the chips were nasty doesn't mean the rest isn't good.
Oh man, my mouth feels dry just thinking about those chips. Yikes. The food on the website is very pretty to look at, though. I might try one or two of these recipes.
Ugh, when I woke up this morning I had my RP brain all mixed up in my programming brain. I blame Enzo Matrix.
But I actually RP'd this weekend, so that's new.
But brain was seriously complaining /usr/bin/amascut cannot spawn new processes Error: /usr/bin/amascut is not multithreaded Kill signal sent to all threads kjlafdlkhewlrkjgewr.gjler;kljewr;kljewvjk
Road tripped up to Colorado. Gorgeous. So, so pretty.
Went to see the Garden of the Gods, and just wow.
There are treeees! And green! And of course beautiful rock formations, and critters. We saw deer! And prairie dogs, and dad saw a bear! An' F'in bear!
Of course, I didn't hear the end of it from my brother who missed it and blamed my "rocket car" driving. Pfft. Whatevs.
Did some swimming and hot tubbing, and ate all the foods.
Oh man, I had the best hunk of cow flesh I have had in a very, very long time. And that's saying something, because I eat a lot of cows, and most of them are awesome, but that T-bone was made of pure delicious.
And now I return to my desk, which is covered in paper mountain. Fortunately, my bosses are out of the office this week, so I can hopefully catch up on this mess before they return to give me more. *fingers crossed*
Ran my Deadlands game. The intrepid adventurers found out that their employer did not so much as lie to them as omit certain facts about the salvage they were retrieving, and that what was killing the lumberjacks on Mount Diablo (because really, for Deadlands, is there a better place to start than someplace called Mount Diablo) was most definitively NOT a mountain lion.
Played in the first session of my friend's Mystic China game. Prevented two of three murders and two of three kidnappings at the Swallowtail Festival of the town of Sandpoint. Was buried in a collapsing house. Fought the Dogkillers, Gruesome Thunder and her nuns of St. Boomington, and Beautiful Lightning (I did not have the opportunity to bash up his pretty face sadly, despite the fact he deserved it).
Celebrated Father's Day with family. Bemoaned the fact that small nieces are LOUD.
I finally got off my ass and started tinkering around with the photo editor like I used to, and it's been fun so far! I'm not sure if anyone's enjoying it half as much as I am but whatevs.
I had fun shopping for grocery goodies at Zingerman's, had a weird night at work last night, someone called asking for me to find them a virtual reality computer. I had to explain that you know games are good for that and finally gave them the number of a company that makes those simulators you sit in.
Now its grey and rainy here and I'm feeling sore and trying to find the energy to actually go into the world, I don't want to. Oh and trying really hard not to think about my lease and current job ending. I will find a job and a next stage in my life.
This weekend quinby and I scooped a Macy's sale for some pots - one less thing we'll need to buy when we get our place. I also found Bell Book and Candle on DVD and snagged the hell out of it, because: a) excellent movie; b) main characters never share my name and this one does!; c) Kim Novak.
Today's done list: WASH ALL THE DISHES, WASH ALL THE CLOTHES (that I knew needed washing), call store here to check in re: transferring - looks like I'll be good to go once I'm in range to get there - and make an appointment to see an apartment. (Holy crap we're going to see an apartment on Friday. It's like we're adults and shit.)
I got my laptop back? Earlier than expected and seemingly back in good condition! With it back in my hands, I would love to play this week. I barely did anything last week.
Otherwise I had a chance to make (and enjoy) the easiest not!ice cream ever. And I decided I missed Starbuck's livejournal layout so much that today I'm doing the work to move it over here.
Chiming in the latest: I spent most of last week in Chicago for research (and now I know ~things~ about Andrew Bird, many of which are very useful and the vast majority of which crack me up), including Friday, which I spent at the Field Museum, at the Fluevog store, and at the hipster radio station on the third floor of the warehouse in North Center.
Saturday I drove through Indiana again and ran around Louisville some and then I ran over to Lexington to hang out with synchronicity2 and sardonicynic! There was bourbon. And sleeping.
And Sunday I drove back to my parents' place in Atlanta. :(
I was off in the middle of Olympic National Park with my family! Four of my five siblings, two siblings-in-law, and my parents; it was a surprise mini-reunion for my dad's birthday, and it was delightful. I'd never been out to this part of the world before, and I highly recommend it. The temperate rain forest is AMAZING.
And now I know how to recognize some plants of this coast! I always feel instantly more grounded in a place if I can do that, and weirdly at sea if I can't.
Now I'm staying with Emmy (Lilly Kane-mun from way back) through Wednesday, which means I'm still on vacation but back on the grid. (Uh, obviously, since I'm posting this.) Soon enough I'll have to faceplant into work, and catching up during a busy time, but not for another day or so. Instead, I'm pretty much getting a walking tour of awesome little cafes with wi-fi, which I am all in favor of.

Same here. I get the stink-eye from pretty much every single friend I have.
I'm intrigued by Korean temple food, however. Is there a story?

So frakin' jealous. I used to live in Colorado and the Garden of the Gods is the only thing I miss.

Had to pack on Father's Day which sucked but I got waffles in the morning and beer in the evening! \o/
I also dyed my hair with left over dye my daughter was using so we kind of have matching hair.
Nick Fury is in Milliways! This last has nothing to do with me but I think it is awesome so I am mentioning it.

...but also a little more disturbing as it's a sign we're going to be leaving.
