Fortunately for you, Sis recently obtained a copy of Honey Badger Don't Care: Randall's Guide to Crazy, Nastyass Animals.

Which do you like better, The Tarsier (Little Crazyface) or The Pink Fairy Armadillo (Outrageously shelly)?
knightoftheswan: (Default)

Blah, work, what are you? Why can't I talk about armadillos?

[personal profile] knightoftheswan 2012-07-24 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aside from being the most fascinating and outrageous member of the armadillo family, the pink fairy is also the family's smallest species, with a length (from the nose to the start of its tail) of about five inches! How adorable! It is also the only member of the armadillo fam to have its shell almost completely separated from its li'l body. Found in Argentina and parts of South America, throughout plains and grasslands, this special pink fairy armadillo is, sadly, classified as an endangered species. Due to both changes to its habitat and being hunted by nasty wild and domestic dogs, its numbers have dwindled. But more and more people are starting to adopt them as pets, which is great on the one hand, but I just hope they get the proper care and attention they deserve!

"These flamboyant armadillos love to stay up all night just snacking on ants, digging dirt, and sexting random animals! They're just so crazy outrageous! Look at this one's pink li'l nose! How precious!"

An old Italian man lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was difficult, as the ground was very hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent,

I am pretty sad because it looks as if I won't be able to plant my garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.

Love, Papa.

A few days later he received a letter from his son:

Dear Papa,

Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are buried.

Love, Vinnie.

At four AM the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son:

Dear Papa,

Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That was the best I could do under the circumstances.

Love, Vinnie.

Or, on a somewhat more personal level:

Once upon a time Camwyn personified the Suck Fairy, which is the entity that comes to artwork you once did or a book or TV show or movie or song you once liked, specifically to insert copious amounts of suck that you only discover when you go back and look again after a long hiatus. She mentioned the Suck Fairy a few times in her journal and a friend of hers mentioned the Suck Fairy to an author at TOR and the author wrote about the Suck Fairy in an article in 2010. Today Camwyn got an email from a guy at Fermilab saying that he was writing about the Suck Fairy and wanted to make sure he was attributing the concept correctly and that she was a pretty widely used and useful critical concept, and was that post from back in November of 2003 the first time she was mentioned in public and did I want to be known as Camwyn of Dreamwidth or what.

So, yeah. Somewhere Gordon Freeman is facepalming because his player got recognized by somebody at Fermilab and it was for defining the Suck Fairy.

(Also Camwyn discovered that if you are going to search for "suck fairy" on Google you really need to make the search term '"suck fairy" -arkansas -toe' because there was a guy who got convicted of doing things that are not related to the Suck Fairy concept at all.)

I can't think of a story. mostly because I am entranced by the gif. Hedgehog faceplant! *pets him*

Today I am mostly being squicked by people posting pictures of Chris Hemsworth and his baby daughter and wife, and then in the same breath talking about how Chris and Tom Hiddleston are secretly shagging. O_<

How about a song?

(This is what happens when my dad gets a hold of Woody Guthrie.)

THIS LAND IS MY LAND
IT IS NOT YOUR LAND
IF YOU DON'T GET OFF
I'LL BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF
I GOT A SHOTGUN
AND YOU AIN'T GOT ONE
THIS LAND WAS MADE FOR ONLY ME

Thank you, thank you, you're far too kind.

ARGARGARG

That message brought to you by my damn hippylibrul side. And the extra verses of the song that aren't often sung except when folks are feeling ornery.

The 1944 recording with this fourth verse can be found on Woody Guthrie: This Land is Your Land: The Asch Recordings Volume 1, where it is track 14.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
This land was made for you and me.

Woody Guthrie has a variant:

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

It also has a verse:

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?

So! Lately a certain Fuzzy has taken to watching the wildlife on the sides of the road too and from work. Normally, seeing as she lives in Wisconsin, the most exciting thing has been the pair of momma does and their four spotty fawns. Given the last encounter had with deer, they get a wide berth and a big ol' dawwww for the bouncy little spotty fawns bounding into the fields of grain.

Today though, after having made enough ravioli to last until the weekend and other various pastas, something...odd was spotted in a farm field. One can't go a mile in Wisconsin without hitting a cow farm. Or three. What was so bloody spectacular was that the cow was chewing up something definitely -not- grasslike and rather..meaty looking while something was struggling out of it's hindquarters. Right there, middle of the field in the bright sunshine.

This Fuzzy pulled over and stared for a moment, mostly out of fascinated disgust before the first calf's bawl got her attention. Thank you universe for the reminder to never have children. Ever.

On another note, welcome to the world two adorable little black calves, you picked a wonderful day to start it on.

Aww, hedgehog.

This morning I woke up far earlier than I normally do to drive out to a quite nice Detroit suburb. I had some scary moments as my car was running out of gas and at a confusing left turn light, but made it to the school. Then I had a quick interview that went really well. I drove back to the shopping center where I'd stopped before, had a rather disappointing lunch at a little deli and then headed home. I made it in one piece but with my nerves rather on edge due to road work and excitement about the interview. Michigan drivers and Michigan roads always leave me feeling like I don't know how to drive.

I made it home, changed out of my interview clothes and found a call from the school. One of the search committee who hadn't been able to make it called to say, they want to meet me on Friday and to talk to me. It was a wonderful conversation as this school is laid back and all about community and kids. I'm still feeling bouncy and happy and plan on going out into the world later as I want something nice to celebrate with. My parents are also driving on their way here and going quickly. I feel like bouncing around and grinning at the world.
